DJ Evil One 2:28 AM - 20 February, 2007
if you're going to try and call yourself a DJ, learn how to DJ...

don't rely on celebrity status and make a mockery of the art.
dj shadow from detroit 2:35 AM - 20 February, 2007
huh?
Thundercat 2:40 AM - 20 February, 2007

i can name a whole bunch of peeps of the top of my head.
DJPremium 1:56 PM - 20 February, 2007
Iknow what you mean, every soap series actor or somewhat halfassed celebrity all of a sudden is a DJ, and they're getting the best payed gigs based on their celebrity status..
DJBlisk 4:00 PM - 20 February, 2007
and they trainwreck and have the worst taste ever!!!

Come on mane, u just can't say this kinda stuff without naming names!!! I never heard of any celebrities becoming DJs. So let's see some names =)

Evil, not only do I think I know who you're talking about,.. I'm surprised to hear you say this. I think I've spun with this guy too. I'm surprised because, I love wack DJs. Makes me look even better,.

That part's cool. But the part where they can get huge gigs or tons more money for dropping Crooklyn Clan joints and not mixing all night sucks.

Oh goodie, the I'm better than X but don't make as much money discussion. Repost!
DJ Evil One 7:07 PM - 20 February, 2007
cubicle...i didn't say anything about money...because although i'm not rich, i'm not broke either...

i'm talking strictly from an artistic standpoint...

if you're going to DJ, learn the basics...that's all i'm saying.

and i'm not in the business of naming names...i'm in the business of rocking parties.
dj cubicle 7:16 PM - 20 February, 2007
If you're talking strictly from an artistic standpoint, you could have just said

"if you're going to try and call yourself a DJ, learn how to DJ...

don't make a mockery of the art."

If you're going to put someone on blast, do it. Otherwise, I'd suggest keeping your comments to yourself lest you end up looking like a whiney bitch.

Celebrities do whatever the hell they want. Get used to it.
Audio1 7:30 PM - 20 February, 2007
Are you guys talking about that dude fro Good Charlotte who started DJing and didnt even know how to work the Turntables or mixer? It was all over the news. Funny shit.

CLASSIC! He forgot to switch from phono to line on Serato. hahahahhahahahahhahahahahhah!
DJ Evil One 7:39 PM - 20 February, 2007
that's dope you're calling me a bitch, cubicle...thanks for putting me on blast, you showed me!
DJ Evil One 7:39 PM - 20 February, 2007
i'm glad that we have DJ cubicle to be the generalizations police...he makes the world a more specific, and thus, better place.
dj cubicle 7:50 PM - 20 February, 2007
Sorry dude, but I call a spade a spade.
dj cubicle 7:51 PM - 20 February, 2007

While, I don't think you had to call names, I agree with you in a general sense.
DJBlisk 9:53 PM - 20 February, 2007
Evil One was just talking about how he thinks they are wack if they actually can't mix. He didn't say anything about money. The topic said I hate wack DJs. They probably do get a lot of money to show off their wack skills but i ain't hating. I just think they're wack.

Have you heard everyone?
dj madi 12:17 AM - 21 February, 2007
i have not heard everone.but the point im tryin to make is that performers(comedians, singers, djs)think that just because the twin cities is a b-market they can get away with doin halfed ass shows.im tired off it.im sorry if its -30 degrees and you did not sellout.a good show is still deserved.and as far as the djs go if your a legend in the game show me why your a legeng.the best promotion for any entertainer is still word of mouf.cause if your hot the first thing out of a customers mouth is "dj so and so is hot"and that will be the set up for the next time your in town.
dj cubicle 12:23 AM - 21 February, 2007
Yup, and if you suck balls and people say "DJ so and so sucked balls" you won't have to worry about said pompous ass putting on a good show next time because there won't be one.

At least you find out the truth about someone if you go to see someone spin live. Your word of mouth is worth just as much as everyone else's.

It was in a slightly different context, but one of the best DJ "shows" I have ever seen was Grandmaster Flash giving a presentation / musical display of the history of hip hop.
youngego 12:53 AM - 21 February, 2007
Fuck It, I'm going in.......I saw the douche bag bassist of Fall Out Boy faking the funk. One of the Good Charlotte dudes opened for him, sucked, and then someone had to switch the computers for them. The record they used in between the flip of computers played completely out. The club was in dead silence for about 15 secs, then the Kanye remix for one of their (Fall Out Boy) songs came on and he (Pete Wentz) started dancing like a stoned offbeat sorority girl.
Here is the kicker: The songs were blending but his back was turned to mixer. He had his headphones on the entire time frontin like he was djing but he forgot that if you are going to Milli Vanilli Dj that you shouldn't talk to your friends or you should touch the mixer from time to time, preferably while songs are changing.

Come and Get Me.
Sheeds 12:59 AM - 21 February, 2007
when you guys said these DJs suck, do you mean they have no concept of DJing? like no beatmatching, blending, phrase matching, etc?

Or you saying he's got the basics down but it's obvious he needs to learn more?

cuz on this serato board, from what I gathered, is that you can do basic beatmatching and blending chorus's with intros and you can still suck
dj cubicle 1:03 AM - 21 February, 2007
As long as you've got the desire, you can't be wack. Your mixing might suck, but conceptually I couldn't say you were wack.

There are extremely gifted DJs on here that have more years of experience than some of the new DJs have years on this earth. As long as your heart is in it and you put in your own time, you can't be wack.
Djheat1200 2:08 AM - 21 February, 2007
thats weak that they got milli vanilli dj's doing this shit...wonder who the ghost mixer was?

You are correct to all of the above.

first off all dj's are different some dj's mix some dj's scratch and then there dj's who do both.

i would never start a post like this because i remembered when i just started.
and as far as the celebrity thing (what's that about?)
everyone strive's to be a celebrity dj!

Apples and oranges. Yours would be the same if you were telling the "regarded gimp" he was trash and making fun of him for not being able to make a shot in gym class.

Not aimed at you, but something to ponder...If you're not encouraging people who are trying, what are you bringing to the art?

Yes, this is completely separate from celebrity "djs" who show up and don't do shit but put headphones on. They can all go to hell for all I care.

aaaahhh good point. I agree.
dj_soo 8:11 AM - 21 February, 2007
the ones who are "trying" should be doing it in their bedrooms, house parties, or doing the opening slots until they perfect their craft - not playing the main timeslot or responsible to rocking the whole night...
john blaze 9:16 AM - 21 February, 2007
It looks to me like the bottom line here is that it just SUCKS for deejays who have put in work, to have to sit back and watch someone who just decided they want to try being a dj yesterday rock a mix cd at a party. It's disrepectful to the real deejays who have spent years perfecting their craft. The guys who saved up money to buy equipment, records, etc. The guys who carried crates and opened the nights for bigger guys. The guys who stood in line to see local big name cats perform. Rockin a mix cd at a club is flat out weak. ( Unless is the first hour when no one is there lol. )

**I was recently at a large Well Known Night Club where a chick guest DJ was rockin a mix cd in the heart of the night. I felt so bad for the resident, because he is a pretty big himself, and he is nice with his.

Ahhhh, one day when I own a club.....

I apologize for my mispellings and grammatical errors in the above message. It's 4am, and I was celebrating Mardi Gras.

yeh dis dude from big brother uk called mikey came to this night club in leeds n i m like when did dis guy become a dj...plus i think his set was pre recorded or something...sounded like tht to me..
DJ Evil One 10:30 AM - 21 February, 2007
basically, the thread goes like this...

fuck DJs that suck and fuck DJs that get by based on fame from something other than DJing.

call me a bitch, call me a punk...but i'm only saying this because i love and respect DJing...it has nothing to do with money (like i said before, i ain't broke).

i'm not naming names because there are honestly more names than i have time to type...it seems like any reality TV star or douche with a sticom managed to buy serato and ruin a party from here to bangkok..

and to them, i say fuck you.
Niro 10:53 AM - 21 February, 2007
What I'd do to piss you off Evil. I just left Bangkok the other day and I thought it went pretty well, Killed it in Cambodia thou. Haha

I feel you on this, you forgot to ad lame chicks with big boobs. Don't get me wrong, I love me some big boobs, but 5Gs a gig to DJ topless. Now all the strippers are gonna start DJing.

For me It's all about the music and learning the craft, there's already a couple of Dj's that go topless and it has nothing to do with Djing.......Eventually time will come that they'll get tired of this fabricated mumbo jumbo.
djknyce 2:06 PM - 21 February, 2007
I was thinking about this today, with people like lindsay lohan deciding she wants to spin, and my friend told me she was @ a party @ all star weekend this past weekend and Nelly was dj'ing Jermaine Dupri's party. Do we try to sing or rap??? Noooooooo, i think they should all stay in their lane.
proffesor ink 2:33 PM - 21 February, 2007
i have been wanting to post something like this for the longest. thank u evil one for doing it.

there is an article in this week's village voice where, TRICIA ROMANO, say mixing is back en vogue

www.trackitdown.net

i really had to laugh, but it made me think. i dont know if u guys know this, but in NY on a saturday night, there are probably about 1500 gigs in the 5 boroughs. that is a lot compared to a place like miami, which would be lucky if they had 100 gigs. i have to say that of 1500 gigs, maybe 1200 the dj can not even mix or is using an ipod. for me to go out on a night off is virtually impossible. the djs are just so bad. i remember when people who were djs would never play in public until they were perfect, remember that anyone? i was like that. i would not get on the tables when i sucked. just didnt want to embarress myself. now the funny thing is, ok, u suck, but maybe you get on and rock some joints people need to hear?? well, no, its not like that either. u suck and then u jump on and rock 5 commercial joints in a row, going from 125 t0 89 to 99 to 135 again. wowwwwwwww.

I am friends with a number of female DJs who are fucking good at what they do (mixing, rocking a party, track selection etc.) and they have to compete with these brainless faked-titied bimbos who dj topless and can't mix worth shit (guess who wins out?). It's sad...
dj cubicle 8:20 PM - 21 February, 2007
what's this mess about topless djs????
dj_soo 9:19 PM - 22 February, 2007
www.portiasurreal.com is probably the most famous.

She can't really mix, plays really boring progressive house or electro (either trainwrecks it or lets the 8 minute repetitive song play out and fades in the next track), and gets bookings up the wazoo cause she plays topless.

There's an entire agency devoted to promoting these girls/playboy models turned DJs (DGI Artist). Most of them have been spinning for 6 months tops before they get sent on the road (at like 6k a show) to tour - most can't mix, can't dj, can't even fake it very well but hey, you get to see nipples...

It's pretty pathetic actually, but hey... sex sells...

DJ.ReFRESH 10:51 PM - 22 February, 2007
I've never heard him spin or whatever so I can't comment on his skills but there's a lesson to be learned here.

DJing is craft and if you want to be good, you need to learn its intricacies and nuances just like you would any other instrument.

If he was on Serato, that drives the point home even more that you can't use this technology as a crutch or as a replacement for true skills.

Stop frontin wack DJs. Your wackness is gonna come around full circle and slap you in the face with some control vinyl.
a-swift 11:08 PM - 22 February, 2007

if you actually go hear them at LAX now, they keep the crowd going. benji does this cuepoint thing, where he assigns cue points to kicks and snares, and beat matches to it like he was using an MPC. then as 32, he drops it over. it really isn't that bad.

Just an opinion...I'm happy for all those who wanna be and try to be a good DJ and have their own style of DJing + the "celebrity" appeal gives it a good total package. But PLEASE...don't ever CLAIM that you're the best among the rest and on top of every body specially with d' oldskul DJs who until now never claims on anythin in spite of their achievements and contribution to the DJ world and music industry. Lottza' DJs get their heads too much blown up just because they get to play in the best clubs, best gigs and get good promotions while other DJs who got mad skills doesn't get any. Just an advise...if you think your doin good on your DJ career...just keep it to your self and stay in d' game without claimin on anythin. And for all the DJs who gotz great skills but gotz no luck yet...be patient, the time will come, you'll get your own shot. Just continue to love what you're doin and keep on upgradin your skills. The progress of your career may be lil' by lil' or a bit slow but that ain't a prob as long as you're climbing up and keepin it real. You know where you stand... but then again, please keep it to your self. Reespek an Jah bless.

But seriously, good words Kimozave.
Dj Ryme 6:03 AM - 23 February, 2007
yeah I agree, I was pissed for years that I felt I was better than alot of those wack dudes in the clubs spinnin, now im so overbooked sometimes im turning down club gigs where 5 years ago I was wishing I could get 5 mins on the decks. Just takes time and perseverance!!!
DJBlisk 6:04 AM - 23 February, 2007
nobody is hating on anybody. I think we're just venting here. but we're not the mainstream normal crowd. If I was them, I would be happy seeing lindsay lohan spin top 40 songs that I like... so she crashed on some mixes... big deal, i'm drunk and there are hella ass n' titties everywhere!!!
De LA 5:34 PM - 23 February, 2007
Speaking of people saying they are the best...

www.reserve-chicago.com

Ive gone to all the shows...Why? Because I like to hear other dj's regardless of who they are or where they spin. For the most part the djs at this event are fun to listen to..even if I dont like what they spin sometimes, I respect what they do. People use connections to get anything in life, its how things work. But are they the best in the nation. Probably not, Im sure there is some 17 year old in a bed room that is just as talented if not more.
I think its become more of a thing here in chicago to bring in a DJ who might not be "good" in our books, but if he brings a crowd, the club doesnt care.
DJBlisk 6:26 PM - 23 February, 2007
all of those guys are pretty good. what aoki lacks in djing talent he more than makes up for in music choice if you don't make him play hiphop. Everybody else can kill it.
That Guy 1 6:32 PM - 23 February, 2007
Lindsay Lohan is trying to DJ??

I'd go for the wrong reasons.

Seriously, I wish I knew of a way to take a stand. I'd say, let's start a petition, but we aren't good for responsible stuff like that.

These guys need to stick to Vegas/LA...NY and Chicago are underground Hop Hop and House towns. With a huge pool of local DJ talent...I've spoken to local NY and Chi-town promoters and they tell me these guys can't sell out a 3rd of these places....

Maybe its due to the lack of credibilty?

Dunno know...

But I do know....When these cats come to town...Nobody cares...

But hey if a club/promoter thinks he/she can make some money??
WHY NOT?

Audio 1- I read your other thread about putting that DJ on blast and I gotta give you PROPS for that one bro...... I get that same question all the time, "Why you f*ckin with vinyl when you got Serato."

My Response and Thought Process on that is: "Sometimes I like the feeling of digging for that next record, knowing I got like one minute and thirty seconds before the current song playing hits it's break, INSTEAD OF USING SERATO OR IT'S SEARCH ENGINE FOR THAT NEXT RECORD!

* I miss the bleeding cuticle's from digging through my crates all nite at a club!!!

I heard someone MENTION DJ STEVE AOKI........ Does anyone know background on dude?

Here's your fill-in: He's the Heir to the Benihana Japanese Restaurant Chain, and he tours the world just DJ'ing and doing other business things a young kid with money can do......

Aoki can mix and he blends well, I've listened to him twice since he has came out here to SF, dude got skills and he's a super nice down to earth person. I think if he keeps up what he's doing, practices and what not, he could be the next DJ AM.....

But that's IMHO

* You shouldn't knock people for trying new stuff.......
J_Static 6:40 AM - 24 February, 2007
OH Yea, sorry if I accused anyone of ripping on DJ AM, but I've just seen enough people on this forum hating on dude, when dude got skills and he's put in major work to get where he's at!!! And even with or without the celebrity girlfriend, he's a celeb in his own right for what he doing and where he's doing it at.

Again, just MHO
DJ Evil One 9:34 PM - 24 February, 2007
no doubt...like i said, i'm only mad at the ones that make a mockery of DJing...

AM is fucking dope, and he's definitely NOT in that category.

DJBlisk 4:13 AM - 1 March, 2007
Skeetz you gonna go? Aoki is spinning too right. I just hate that fucking club.... the dance floor is small and everybody just stands around.
DJ Young Herrera 4:46 PM - 1 March, 2007
My boy was at a party in NYC for fashion week a while ago and Jared Leto...or Skeet Ulrich was the DJ...I can't remember which one. They are the same person to me. Anyway, he took a picture of him and he looked all blown out/burned out.

My boy said the music was wack but he took a picture cuz he looked over and was like..."hey, its Jared Leto/Skeet Ulrich".

WACK DJ Alert!
DJ Evil One 9:17 PM - 1 March, 2007
LOL @ DJ Spair.

and actually, now that you mention it, the reason i started this thread was because of a dude from a sitcom DJing...

i was at a club, heard him and wanted to cut out my eyes and jab scissors in my ears.

props for wanting to DJ, gas face for being wack.
Dj Ryme 9:25 PM - 1 March, 2007
I mean I dont even see the point they want to dj they are already......

DJ Evil One 9:27 PM - 1 March, 2007
i don't know, but i'm going to take acting lessons...and pretty soon i'll be taking acting work from these DJs...

i'll have my manager hit up the networks, like "yo, evil one is going to be in town, and for an additional fee, he'll appear on your TV show after his DJ gigs"
dj cubicle 9:34 PM - 1 March, 2007

it goes to show u how dispespectful and wack our business is.

POINT

if u were a famous dj, of course one or 2 come to mind (Am and skribble) you could get a cameo (part on a show), but never land a feature as an actor. Yet actors, and for tha matter even real musians, try to be djs, and they have NO SKILLS. They can land the "feature" bigest hottest club in the country.

goes to show you the direction of clubs in 2007. it is all about the CELEBRITY DRAW, maybe the party, but definetly not the music, NOR HOW TO PLAY MUSIC ARTFULLY AND WITH SKILL.

I love this thread. i hope that if DAnny masterson saw me at a Reading he would come to me and say man, DUDE, u suck, why dont you go and practice more and come back in a couple of years when u r a good actor and then maybe u can get a little tiny roll. Because i would surely like to tell him that about djing.
for that matter Benji can tell me, YOU SUCK, cant play drums very well, but go home and practice for 8 years come back and maybe you can play in a local rock band.

cause if i walked up to these dudes and said that, FIRST I WOULD BE A HATER, and SECOND they would wanna knock me out. IM sure. LOL. But i still love them.
DJ Evil One 6:24 PM - 3 March, 2007

I know there's only one person who can be Clark, and still be talking in the third person as well as RZA and R. Kelly do.
