Ok, so lets say:
1. Don't play Timberlake under $10
2. Every 3rd guy in a club is also a DJ :-), but on this night only you are responsible for the music
3. Every 2nd guy in a club is a MC, but you have no open mic night, so only you talkes to the mic
4. Ignore stupid requests, don't argue, take your headphones and go on mixing
5. 10% of your income goes to my bank account: 12312321 for these useful tips :-)
Now you are ready for the clubs packed with fools :-) you'll love them and their comments...

1. Lean to Count Bars.
2. Learn to Beat Match.
3. Learn to appreciate all genres of music.
4. Find another dj who's been in the game for a minute and learn everything you can.
5. have your own style.
7. Invest in vinyl (used records stores and thrift stores are gold mines)
6. Partice, Pratice, Pratice
I'm not guarnteeing that you'll be the best or be able to contend with them, but following these simple laws will give you a good chance if you stay true to the music.

buy records again. buy more records. don't stop buying records.
And to take it one step further, KNOW your records inside out, backwards, forwards, and sideways. How long are the verses? The intro? The chorus? What's the tempo? Is it a good genre-transition record? A floor-filler? A floor-emptier? Will it work with this crowd?
Buy records and listen to them all the time.

Also, look at other mixers, amps, processors and spekers to figure out how to hook them up too.

this rule can only be broken for special cases, like when you mix two songs sooooo sweetly, as in the two songs were made for each other, beautifully side by side, beats and rhythms and melodies and basslines intertwining (sp?) so seamlessly that you swear it was destiny.

OH SHIT!!!! Let me tell you about that one.
There is a DJ in San Jose, CA at Taste Ultra Lounge (not gonna say names, but I will say he is on KYLD) that used the infamous mix that use to be posted on DJ A.M.'s website. He must have played at least 10 to 12 minutes of A.M.'s mix and passed it off as his shit. He was behind the decks just bobbin and shufflin like that was all him. All this as you hear A.M. scratching and mixing. I just stood there and gave him the "Are you fuckin kidding me" look.
Like "Request" says, if you need a mix to take a break, make your own damn mix.

DJ Rule #6
Research your DJ name before you THINK you got creative and found something new that no one else has.
DJ Rule #6.a
Do NOT under any circumstances use your first legal name as your DJ name unless it's unique.
I use mine because everyone knows me as "Clark." I've tried a million variations, and still use variations at will.
I WILL NEVER use my last name. If I had a cool Spanish last name, like Mike, I'd use it, too.
"Craig Mack" and "Keith Murray" are real names.

Don't do birthday shout-outs... because it's always someone else's birthday, or their sister's boyfriend's anniversary. Only do them if you're prepared for surge of annoying requests for shout outs. If you turn them down after doing one, they'll nag you and ask you why you won't do it because you just did a birthday shoutout for someone else.
You're a DJ, not a professional shout-out MC for the evening.

Also, it helps to ask bartenders and go-gos some of their favorite tunes and play them if applicable. I find that every person in the building contributes to the energy level and throwing them a bone every now and then helps immensly.

Fundamentals,
-Buy the very best equipment you can
-Learn basic music theory
-Practice and improve constantly
now...
* Thou shalt remember that you are often times the first person to the party and last one to leave. You are there to work not chase after numbers. That will come in due time. If you were that dope it would be coming to you anyways. Practice some more grasshopper.
* Thou shalt never ever ever ever ever undercut another DJ just to get his or her gig. You earn what you negotiate. There will always be someone willing to do your job for far less. It's their own fault they have to work twice as hard to earn what you make in half the time. Plus you can use the extra money/time to improve gear/skills. It's win-win.
* It's a fine line between playing what people want to hear and what is the next hot *ish. Know that line and cross it when necessary.
* Don't ever ask to spin another DJs' spot/gig. It's disrespectful. If you want to do someone else's work you can always come over and rake my leaves.
* Do offer to help other DJs that you respect and will respect you in return. Most of my partners just started out carrying gear and fielding requests but later wound up spinning at my clubs early in the evening before it got crowded. Soon, they either took over my spot after I was ready to move on or they found their own gig. I always took care of them and they did the same in return.
* Don't be a faux DJ. You know who you are, you go to another DJs set and stand up by (or behind) the DJ booth. You are not spinning tonight, you don't look important, and you will simply piss of whomever is spinning. It's a good way to get something thrown at you.
* This is very important..., don't ask another DJ stupid questions while he/she is working. I cannot remember how many times I will be in the middle of a complicated routine and some dumb ass wanna be DJ comes up and asks if I'm going to play xyz record. Sure sunshine, I'll get right on that.
* Rarely tell your audience no. You will get asked for every crappy record under the sun at some time or another. Politely, tell them you're not sure if you brought that particular record but if you do find it you will try to get it on. It's not your place to explain to a big woman if she was a bit smaller she might get guys to ask her to dance instead of doing the Cha-Cha Slide with the rest of the Weight Watchers mafia (I actually saw this happen, dude got his ass beat).
* Know the difference between entertaining and annoying. If you are spinning hip hop at a nightclub don't turn it into a turntablism exhibition. What's cool to us isn't always cool to everyone else. Also, don't talk through... the... whole... damn... song. Most electronic DJs don't talk much, but some hip hop and party DJs don't know when to shut up.
* Lastly, (at least for me) you are not the rockstar, your audience is. Most world class DJs love the people they DJ for. They respect and give themselves to these people out of mutual adoration. Remember this, and you gain a loyal following that will keep you busy for years to come.

WTF JT? Don't you want him to make any mistakes? Sometimes advice can be too good. STFU, we got enough competition as it is. AND you're giving him good advice on how to build a loyal following!?!?!?! You, my friend, can get the FINGER!!!!
j/k of course. JT is talkin' on some real shit. Read his post twice, print it out and hang it by your practice deckss. Print it on a business card, laminate it and keep it in your wallet. Then read it again to make sure you absorbed it all. A'ight. =)

Rule number 1 in my book is "DON'T BITE MY SETS".
Rule number 2 "DON'T ASK TO COPY MY HARD DRIVE".
Get your own music and develope you own style. You can the same hard drive that Dj Jazzy Jeff uses. But if you don't know what music is in there and the style of which he dj's. It will be of no use to you. When i say don't bite my sets. I mean it's alot of hard work researching songs that go together to tell the story or invoke a certain response in the club. So, do your own research and create you own sets...
