Always thought (as he was part of the roots family) that this guy is a down to earth dude, but looks like I am totally wrong. However I still like his music, but his personality... nah. I understand why Timbaland put disses on him. On the pictures he really looks like a call-boy to me. To each his own I guess.
I didnt know that he produced Baby Boy for Beyonce and co produced Still D.R.E.
The best part of the interview is at the end...

Quote:
Around 7 a.m., after a long night at the office, Storch is in the rec room, fatty in hand, his eyes starting to close. The Jessica song is almost done, Mya is arriving in a few hours to work on a song, and on his phone there's messages from DMC and Ja Rule, looking for tracks, and a text from someone else looking for something steamier. U COULD BE GETTING YOUR DICK SUCKED RIGHT NOW, it reads. He laughs: "If this ain't heaven, it's hell."

Lil Jon called him a biter.
Come on... someone need to break it down for me. Why is Timbaland having beef with him when they worked together before?
Quote:
For a short while in 2005, Storch worked with fellow mega-producer Lil' Jon to produce hits for Lil' Flip, Angel Doze and Tony Sunshine among others. However, the relationship soon turned sour and ended with Lil' Jon criticizing Storch for being a "biter".Lil Jon called him a biter.

i guess because it sounds technically perfect - it puts me off. thats a personal opinion thing.
seems like hes trying to say that hes not doing all he can musically, well - do all you can then. not bein funny hes got enough contacts who would jump on a storch album if he did it... seems like hes trying to appeal to the producers in that statement.

Hey, its his life and he is self-made. I can't hate. He can say whatever he wants. As long as he keeps making hits his opinion will continue to be relevant!
I just don't understand how he can be blazed all the time and still function at such a high level.

The term FAGGOT wasn't meant to say he is GAY nik, and the term FAGGOT could be used in other ways. I know plenty of gay people who use that term loosely and in different ways.
P.S - I never said there was anything wrong with being gay, sorry to be an asshole but I didn't know this forum made you the head of the "POLITICALLY CORRECT DEPT"
The Roots is a sick group of real musicians and I don't doubt Storchs capabilities of playing all those instruments, but he said it himself, "I didn't want to be the keyboardist in a band"
AKA - "I didn't want to be the TOKEN JEWISH WHITE KID in an all black group.....
Has anyone ever heard the Roots mention Storch????

From wikipedia:
* Faggot (epithet), a pejorative term for a gay or effeminate man
* Faggot (wood), a bundle of sticks or branches
* Faggots (novel), a novel by Larry Kramer
* Faggot (unit of measurement), an archaic unit of measurement
* Fagot (pronounced with a silent T), the NATO reporting name for the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 airplane
* Faggot (food), a British pork meatball
* Fagot(to), the name in many languages of the musical instrument bassoon
Choose which one you meant.
BTW, I will stand up and speak out what I think, regardless of being part of any dept or not.

Actually I only heard his name being mentioned on The Roots Live cd, that was it. I really didnt know that he was part of the Roots family before I read about it (and I've seen a couple of roots documentations/interviews) But I think he stills means something for the Roots as he has produced at least one song on their latest album.
What I dont understand is... They say Scott charges 80k for a track... I cant imagine the Roots paying 80k for a mass-prodcution track (thats what I consider his hit factory being - mass production [but still dope IMHO]).

A FAG (short term for FAGGOT) used as a slang term for CIGARETTE by the ENGLISH.....
Fag, Faggot, etc. can be used in anyway inside and outside of Wikipedia or a REAL DICTIONARY, like how people came up with different means of using the word NIGGA, or NIGGUH, or NIGGAH.
Still doesn't make using the term in a different way right, since the original version was made as a slanderous term towards a specific gender, color, race, creed, or sexual orientation.
My apologies if I offended you (if you are GAY or just took offense to the word).....

Who says he's a genius? His sound is weak, he uses the same, basic factory PCM sounds from wack keyboards. He plays basic melodies, and his drums are so anorexic Allie McBeal looks obese.

yes it does, it also means Faggot as in a ematball a si said above, and it's also used as a derogatory term for a Homosexual, it all depends on the context.
Same as Gay, it traditionally means to be Happy/Merry and has been twisted into a term for a homosexual.
As has Camp, camp is to be flamboyant and showy, but it's been associated with homosexuality for a long time.

His sound was nice when it was first heard. He uses the Motif ES8 for most of his tracks. And that keyboard isn't wack. I own that keyboard and it's a monster. Better sounds than any triton. But yeah he needs to find some new sounds. His basic melodies is what moves dance floors though. Complex melodies don't work in the club. He's using what works and he's raking in the dough. Gotta respect what he does.

Read between the lines pal.........
Tour with a band or produce? TOUR! Cuz you can produce as your touring, the Roots among other groups have done just that on the road......
I believe Storch is a hardworker, but I also believe he's gonna turn out like a Pharrell,EVERYONE USES HIM AND ENDS UP WITH THE SAME SOUNDS......Which is B-O-R-I-N-G!!!!
I love Pharrell and glad people backed off of using him constantly, just like everyone is using Timbaland right now. Listen to Timberlake's entire album, each track sounds the same almost.

unfortunatly i'm not prepared to read between the lines because it menas peopel liek you jump to conclusions. You're making a borderline racist comment about the guy based on an assumption.
no he said he'd RATHER produce in the Studio then tour. Not that he couldn't do both. He said he didn't want to o both as he dosen't liek touring.
Touring is not for everyone it's very hard and a lot of people find it depressing to be away from family, friends and living out of hotels for a long period of time.
Most people don't produce well whilst touring, writing songs yeah? but thats different to Producing when you need to be in a specific environment and focus on specific elements of tracks, the two are quite different disciplines.
And when you generally hear of poeple producing stuff on the road it means they shot off to nearest high quality the studio for a couple of days not that they sat on the bus recording their vocals and mixing down a drum snare.
well 99% of producers do that, most have a sound. even pop music producrs have a sound, Motown was renowned for it's sound - which all came from how it's production team tackled recording.
success is infectious everyone wants it, it's really down to the individual to decide "no" and back themselves off - but to do that you need the money to pick and choose our stuff.
thats what Teddy riley and Jam and lewis all did, backed off and do whatthey want when tehy want.

The "sound" argument doesn't work with me. Most "producers" must just be intellectually lazy.
I know, because I've made many tracks for myself, and they all sounded very different.
It may be have been simple: different drums, patterns, sounds and melodies = different "sound".

It's a misconctrued perception that peopel liek the Neptunes Timbaland et al sound is simple. It's really really not, you just gotta know what your listening for to realise that.
The guys from Chic made a lot of records prodcued people from Diana Ros to Carly Simon to Madonna every record is different Madonnas "into the groove" dosen't sound like "i'm coming" out or "good times" or "why?", yet they all have THAT Chic Sound.

Yes they are. That's why they are sample free nowadays. They tweak them but they are using samples less and less for radio tunes. Check out this video and see what factory sounds he's using for those hits. The Motic ES8, not the standard motif from 2002.

Yes they are. That's why they are sample free nowadays. They tweak them but they are using samples less and less for radio tunes. Check out this video and see what factory sounds he's using for those hits. The Motic ES8, not the standard motif from 2002.

Thousands of every Motif have been made. There everywhere. I don't care what model it is.
If you knew anything about sampling, you'd know probably 99% of samples aren't cleared.
How many sample credits are on Gang Starr albums, maybe 5-15? Yet, Premier may use that many different samples per song (not album).
Why, because most of his samples are too short for anyone to know the difference. Plus, he knows what he can get away with.
Also, I can only remember one producer who was dumb enough to clear drum samples. (I'm sure there have been more than one.)
Keyboard kicks and snares are sissy... period.
I don't care if you don't like my definition of sissy.
Clarkapedia defines sissy as sissy. Get over it.

I thought you were talking about current hip hop, not 90's stuff. I know ALOT about sampling. I know they don't use keyboard kicks and snares, but yes they can and some do. I know for a fact lil jon uses some of them. All it takes is some compression, some eqing, and some creativity to get the kicks and snares you need. I'm talking synth noises and pianos and such. But as for kicks and snares I'm with you on that. I use all sorts of producer packs with sampled kicks. Nobody in the industry even thinks about clearing a kick or snare, they don't because it's impossible to tell where, when, or how it came about. That's not what I'm talking about. Even a hit(musical hit/note) from a older song is easy to sample but once again, too hard to win in court so it's not an issue. Copyright infringement is mostly melodies. So as far as sampling kicks and snares, yes 99% are sampled from somewhere but the most of the rest is made up and sample free. That's why I like older hip hop, I love the way they used samples. That's what lacks in todays hip hop IMO.

I had a beat demo cd I was shopping around Houston a 3-4 years back. The feedback I got from nearly everyone was that it sounded too "old school" or "too 80s."
18 months later, guess what everything sounded like? Totally naked beats featuring a big gated-verb kick and giant clap sounds. Was I heralded as a visionary? No. I was called a copycat producer making beats that sounded like everyone else's.
Sigh. Sometimes you just can't win.

I'd say thats due to the fact the Storch doesnt rap and always has the biggest hot garbage rappers on his "doper" tracks.
I'd say imo his best work was with the Roots (Proceed and Mellow my Man) I fucking love those tracks. You can't deny his talent, but comparing him to Kanye is like apples and cucumbers. They are nothing alike.
There are tons of Storch beats out there that I will bump until I die, same goes with Kanye.
I prefer Kanye just to the simple fact I would much rather hear him rapping over his own beats, then hear Fat Joe or Lil Weezy spittin their nonsense all day over Storch beats.
Put Black Thought, Snoop, Meth/Red, over his beats more often then not and it would be a different story.
I'd just say they are both of the top 5 producers in the game right now.

Totally agree. it's not really an argument of who has more talent. they both have their own thing going and have different styles. comparing someone who dances in ballet to someone who does hip-hop would be unfair.
the only real argument is who you like to listen to more. (at least thats my opinion)

By the way when it comes to Kanye - what does He did "fresh" for real ??
use soul samples ?- been there
high pitched voice? - c'mon it's decades old
had his mouth wired and recorded a track - maybe...
make almost same track for John Legend and Talib Kweli ? - Naaah
Stealin drum sounds from Eminem - hmmm...
his Ego- yeah-thats really new...
quotin Pharell from some interviev:
"Kanye make hits - but which of those track that he used wasn't hit before?"
I'm not disrespectin' - simple facts really.

Many of you think that sampling has to be "unoriginal". You really must not understand sampling.
Timbaland "plays" samples. He rarely uses pre-made loops. (Yes, I know the controversy.) Do you not understand?
He may sample a single "hit" (single instance of sound), then make a totally different composition. He "chops", while adding keyboard sounds.
Sampled sounds ARE Hip-Hop. Most keyboard sounds are pathetic, especially if they come from the trendier keyboards, which happen to use a simple, old technology, called FM (PCM) synthesis.
Sorry, Korg fans, but most Korgs basically use the same technology as an 80's DX-7.
Motif's and E-mu modules aren't much better.
The better keyboards are the ones that are either truly analog, not an analog "emulator", which are usually older, or from a lesser known, more professional client-centered company, such as Kurzweil, Oberheim, Access or Moog.
Storch uses the same preset sounds from wack keyboards. How old are the quasi-Indian sounds he keeps using?
A "preset patch" is a sound that has been unmodified from the factory. In other words, hundreds of thousands of people could have the same sounds.
No offense to Akon, but I know where to find the "1", "2", "3" sounds he used for the Young Jeezy - "Soul Survivor" track in a Triton. These same sounds have been used thousands of times.
I also know where the Neptunes have countless of their sounds in Korgs and E-mu modules. "Grindin'" was mostly three keys next to each other on a Triton.
Busta Rhymes' "What It Is" can be played on a Triton.
So, what's so "original" about using preset patches? What's original is finding an obscure record, sampling a single hit, then combining with other obscure samples.

You know you're my dude Clark, but that might be the most informative break down I've seen you post. You're exactly right, people wrongly assume because they don't hear something recognizable, that it's not a "sample". Sampling doesn't always involve straight lifting, looping and adding drums to a track. There are different levels of it like Clark said.

Some people would be surprised at some tracks that have samples on it. The art of sampling is so diverse.... You can play a sample loop, or you can chop that ish up that is not even reconizable. The cats who can chop it up, but make the new ish sound smooth is hell are the ones I look up to...

^^^ Exactly Scotty.... You're totally right. To me, that's why J Dilla HAS to mentioned among the best producers ever because of how he could shop up songs and create atmosphere around the sample so dope, you would barely be able to recognize the sample in his finished work.
I was listening to his song, "Won't Do" last night at a gig, and I was like, dammit, he made the Isley Bro's "Footsteps in The Dark" sound incredible.

^^^ Funny you say that Limelight... I was going to put J dilla in that last post. won't do is such a smooth track... I have a video of dilla choppin a sample and laying a track together. He was sooo smooth man. I think if people knew a little more about older music that Hip hop came from, they could really appriciate cats like J Dilla, and Pete rock. I have also read various articles by ?!love and some of the beatjunkies getting Dilla beat tapes, and just wondering " How the F*** did he fit all off (insert sample here) into that beat? Donuts almost soulds as if you are listening to a band at times...

Word. That's true. People don't know a lot about music, so it's hard for them to respect it. I wonder if Dilla respected Kanye? They're *somewhat* comparable as far as the soul samples, only Dilla's stuff is much more involved than Kanye's.

I actually like him and what he does. Production and rhyme-wise. Obviously there's a comparison to him and Dilla because of the fact they both produce and rhyme and are good (Dilla being better) at both.
I am a fan of his Late Registration album for sure. The production is superb. Probably one of the musically best hip-hop albums I've ever heard. I wish there was an instrumental album of it. I think the influence Jon Brion (Fionna Apple, Portishead) had on the album stands out.
As far as his attitude, I'm not a fan of it either. BUT... after having people sh*t on your dreams and tell you can't do something, or won't be accepted, it's easy to be bitter and want to show them otherwise once you make it. I had a club mgr tell me she could never justify hiring me, now that her spot is closed and I see her come to where I spin - I'd like to get Kanye-esque on her, but it's not my style.

Speaking of (un)original samples, I remember hearing Hips Don't Lie with Wyclef and hearing the same melody from Scratch Roulette, without the percussions of course. Forgive me for not knowing what the actual sample is called.

I think when it comes down to straight hip-hop, Kanye's the better producer. Storch has more "traditional" musical skills (as far as I know Kanye doesn't play keys or guitar or drums or anything like that), but don't get it twisted--sampling takes just as much skill/ability/knowledge as any other method of composition. I have to admit, that comment above about writing "original" stuff with keyboards and shit was quite short-sighted, but it's just an opinion I guess.
Kanye is a much more interesting producer to me and in some senses hip-hop's biggest hope for railing against shitty the hip-hop that's being pumped out these days (have you guys seen the cover of XXL that's out right now?). Yet at the same time, Storch produced "Still Dre"--that gets mad respect from me because that beat is damn-near perfect IMO. It sounds like maybe he "waters down" his sound (or whatever he said) to appeal to a larger audience/client base, but that's no excuse--if that's the case, he has no one to blame but himself.

en.wikipedia.org :
Quote:
Formerly, picnic meant a potluck, an entertainment at which each person contributed some dish to a common table for all to share. The first usage of the word was traced to a 16th century French text, describing a group of people dining in a restaurant who brought their own wine. The word picnic is based on the verb piquer which means 'pick' or 'peck' with the rhyming nique meaning "thing of little importance".
