You should be able to find the differences on the Technics website.
Off the bat, I think the MK5's have a recessed On/Off power knob and the pitch control slides smoother with a quartz-lock reset button. There is no notch on the pitch control slider. I believe the pitch control is more digital, unlike the MK2, therby making it more accurate.
The MK5 will are now discontinued. The only ones Technics is making are the MK2's and M5g's. I want the M5g's.

i got the M5G's... only difference(s) between those and regular techs is
1. the tonearm- they say its improved or some shit. i dunno.
2. increased pitch range (cool as shit) you can change the pitch range from plus/minus 8 to plus/minus 16... so songs that normally wouldn't mix... can now be mixed.
3. reset button- button you can hit so the track is exactly playing at 0.0- good for recording tunes into serato accurately to their original speed.
i like them. somebody buy me the gold joints.

don't forget about the start / stop speed (it's the fastest out of all) and custom braking options. :)

I think your wrong on the mk2 mk5 discontinued thing. I worked at Guitar Center for more than a year and the MK2s have not been made for a long time. If your finding them new its backstock. If the Mk5s really have been discontinued then the only current model would be the m5g.
Oh and the k or rather the mk stands for mark, another way of saying model.
The mk2 (mark 2) was the first time technic had improved on the original design in around 15 years, followed by the mk3 which had the recessed power switch, the reset button, and the clickless pitch slider. The mk5 came out in '03 I believe, and had the digital pitch fader with better resolution, the improvements to the tonearm and an improvement to the motor for the first time since the original, adding more torque.
The g in m5g stands for grandmaster. The M5g or the SL1200 Mark5 Grandmaster edition was the prize at the DMC's for a few years after the Mk5s came out. The difference between the ones you can win and the ones you can by is the Gold Plating instead of the chrome.

from the scratchworks site..
It's not very often that we have anything to post about Technics but rumours abound about the 1210MK5G being discontinued. So being the dutiful DJ hack that I am, rather than post rumour, I got FACTS. Clarification came from Panasonic UK to squash rumours. And It's not what you might think.
So here goes - the 1200MK5 and 1210MK5 WILL be discontinued leaving the 1210MK5G as the top of the range and most definitely NOT discontinued. It never was a limited edition, just a flagship special edition model. And the 1200 and 1210 MK2 will continue as normal. So now there's some distance between the MK2 and MK5G models instead having a middle MK5 deck to confuse matters. So it's vanilla Technics or the more expensive piano black extra pitched blue light luxury model left in the range.
In this case, less choice is better. Now you can make a very clear decision about which Technics to buy. Well that's my opinion anyway.

when someone says the work at Guitar center.. that does not say much.... they will also tell you over at GS that the Denon DN-S5000 is disscontinued witch is false.. i went there the other day to get more serato vinyl.. and the guy behind the dj desk went over to the box they keep slipmats in and said.. "here is all the vinyl we have".... of coarse i informed him that that was not vinyl.
