Effects via Software Programs (EFX-500 Substitute)

DJ ROSSBERG 4:28 AM - 19 January, 2007
I searched for a similar thread but couldn't find one. I would like to use effects in my mixes, but I can't afford the Pioneer EFX. I am looking for a program that I can run effects on the audio. Whether I record it, or use it during a live performance. I would like to use REAL effects, not bullshit ones like the ones in Acid Pro, Sonar, and Cubase. Does anybody have any info on the topic? Any input is valuable.

Sell your present mixer and get the Pioneer DJM-400. You will not be disappointed.
dja_one 6:50 AM - 22 January, 2007
I see you have the TTM-56...

Hmmmmmm...I would still say get the Pioneer DJM-400. I packed up my PCM-07 and strictly use my DJM-400 now. The Echo and Flanger are great. The crossfader is good not the best but good. The EQ is good...not the best but good. Great investment.

they are only bullshit if you use them wrong.

You basically want to use decent VST effects in realtime right?

Get yourself a modular environment or a VST host and use the VST's in a stand alone mode within these environments.

Be warned though how good this will work to an external box is entirely dependent on your system and soundcard and what VST's you decide to use.

Ableton Live has very good effects built in, and you can route all your audio in to it from Serato and out of it to your mixer, plus you can add other VSTs or Audio Units you like. Latency is a problem though, so it depends on your CPU, sound card, computer specs, etc. how well it runs.

You can try doing it with the demo (download it at www.ableton.com) to see how it works for you. And I would recommend to have 2 separate computers, one for SSL and the other for Live, since the two running on the same one could cause stability issues. A MIDI controller will make the Ableton experience much better too.

i will try that.. thanks for the advice from everybody !

Best advice i can tell you is to save your pennies!
the EFX 1000 is a great box if you can save enough for it, i just got one recently and adore it! So fun and intuitive to use.

do you need a good soundcard for this?
DJ FLATLINE 10:30 AM - 23 January, 2007
if you have a dr. sample or roland sampler, you can use it to trigger your drops and add delays, echo, reverb, flanger, phaser...etc

KP3 or the new Kaoss PAd mini.....

Software wise i'd go with ableton, if you can afford another soundcard + the program + possibly another laptop + midi controller (remote sl Zero)

when the SL1 becomes an asio interface it might be possible to route it into some sort of vst host and effect the outputs before they hit your mixer
