Macbook Pro CPU usage question

DJ Enferno 9:26 PM - 17 January, 2007
In the activity monitor of my Macbook Pro, when looking at the "% CPU" of Scratchlive, that number seems fairly high (40 to sometimes over 100, when building overviews). Looking at the stats in the CPU tab at the bottom, it seems to show some much lower percentages. I have a G5, but never bothered to monitor the CPU. Just making sure my laptop is working right. Anyone know what to make of these CPU % numbers? They don't add up.

I think the red paint adds to the cpu somehow.

hey enferno, I just starting building overviews in a crate to get some #'s for you to compare. Here are the #'s while my overviews are building:

My % cpu runs between 85 and 101.60

% user- between .5 and 7.50
%system - between 1.5 and 3.0
%nice - as high as 52
%idle - as high as 61

ok cool thanks BriChi, that's in line with my stats. I'm wondering how it is that % can be greater than 100. I'm definitely missing something.

I don't know exactly why, I could be wrong, But i'm assuming because it's a dual core processor that the % can actually reach 200%, It would be 100% of each core. So if we see 100% cpu usage, it's actually 50% each core

this is a good way to monitor it too, with the activity monitor open, Right click on it in the dock at the bottom of the screen, choose monitors, then "show cpu usage". This will show you the active usage of both cores
