Neat stuff.... incase your not sure how MANPADS work....

The IR or Heatseeker Missle is a fire and forget missle. The rocket seeker head had a sort of strobe head that takes in so many pictures per second... kind of like how the average film play back is 29 frames per second. The processors makes in flight corrections to trajectory based upon what the missle is seeing in the Infared, "IR" feild of view.

I've had classes that show how the whole thing works, however I can't find it on google.

Anyway On my helicopter we have a piece of equipment, we call it the Discoball, and it sends of false IR flashes that confuse the missle and make it not be able to correct course to hit us.

This LASER system is an awsome concept as the IR sensors in the missle are highly sensetive to IR light. A LASER would overload the seeker and the missle would simply not be able to make a correction.

I guess the only way to still shoot that plane down that had this new system would be to shoot multiple missles, that way you tie up the LASER system.

thats some impressive technology.

defensive tech as opposed to defence by offence...

BAE systems is 10 minutes from me. Ive done work in there building. Scary that this stuff is built in basically my backyard.

MANPADS - Man Portable Air Defense System... Basicly any shoulder fire Anti-Aircraft missle is classified as a MANPADS.

Example: Stinger, SA-7, Ect.

why is that scary?

That makes me wonder...if the missile is launched and then the guidance system of said missile is disrupted and therefore unable to obtain the initial target...where does the missile go? And is it armed after launch. If so wouldn't it detonate wherever it landed or struck something?
DJ Nevoc 6:45 PM - 17 January, 2007
Some missle systems are similar to a setup in an RPG, whereas after a certain distance the missle either self detonates, goes inactive and crashes into the ground, or lastly crashes into the ground AND explodes.

Eenteresting.

Im sure that Northrump goes out in the middle of nowhere to test all this stuff, and also clear the area/airspace around the test site, AND I'm positive that these companies have military advisors on site.
DJ Michael Basic 3:22 AM - 18 January, 2007
I just did a holiday party last weekend for a company called BAE systems...I don't think it was the same one though...I'll have to check the paystub from the check and see what they are about.

man pads for manginas :)
DJ Nevoc 9:31 AM - 18 January, 2007
Look to simplify what I've said above... Go to the store and get of of those pocket LASER pens and point it at the IR sensor on your TV and hold it there. Then have a friend help you out and try to change channels. I Bet it doesnt work.

The same theory is applied against the MANPADS.

Its super simple if you break it down. The hard part it developing a system that detects launches, can track a missle, and can keep a LASER aimed at the Seeker.
DJ Nevoc 9:32 AM - 18 January, 2007
I mean change channels with your remote.
