Pitch variation, L/R+P/A Balance, SSL Modes

I have some questions, if anyone feels like answering them.
I'm getting some issues with consistantly fluctuating pitch when i'm mixing on technics 1200's with ortofon pro s carts.
I've noticed that in calibration, my circles are more like an oval on one side an a bit bulged out on the other side. It's my understanding that i should use the balance knobs to adjust the circles, is this correct and does it make a difference to pitch tracking?
I'm going to buy M447 carts ande see if i have any better luck with them, i've found the ortofon pro s's to be quite shit stability and record-wear wise.
Another query i have is regarding modes, are any of the modes (ABS, REL) better regarding pitch tracking?
Cheers

Yes you should try to make the scopes as close to a circle as possible.
SSL measures the speed and direction of the record by calculating the phase difference between the left and right channels. If your scopes aren't perfect circles this calculation will be wrong. However the scope is being redrawn thousands of times a second so I'm sure that the pitch variations even themselves out.
The most important thing is to make sure your headshells are adjusted correctly, try using a headshell protractor. www.enjoythemusic.com
Neither of the modes is better for pitch tracking.
