Name: Nicecast

Homepage: www.rogueamoeba.com

Tracks: (2, 4, Multi) Will record directly from an application or from any recognized sound source

Formats Supported: MP3, AAC, AIFF, WAV, ALAC

Platform: Mac

Cost: $40

Demo?: (Y) Static is overlaid on all broadcast audio after 20 minutes.

Pros: Internet radio broadcaster with support for layered VST and AudioUnit effects and recording.

Cons: When archiving, sometimes cuts off the first part and/or last part of the audio (workaround: pre-roll and post-roll your recording)

Comments: I use this to do my internet and remote shows, works great. Well worth the money to get the Icecast GUI.
BassChamber 8:48 AM - 24 February, 2005
Name: Harddisck ogg recorder

Homepage: www.fridgesoft.de

Type: mp3/ogg/wav recorder

Platform: Windows

Cost: Free

Demo?: NA

Pros: all! easy to use, it doesnt eat too much cpu when recording in wav format, it allows you to record straight to mp3 or ogg, you can test the input before recording, you can create several consecutive files while recording just pressing a button...

Cons: interface very simple and a bit ugly (is this a con?)

Comments: awesome program!! a must have! you can use it to record your sets using the same machine that is running SSL without problems (of course, recording in wav format)

Name: Creative Recorder

Homepage: www.creative.com

Tracks: Single

Formats Supported: Wav

Platform: Windows

Cost: Comes with various soundcards from Creative

Demo: As far as I know, no.

Pros: Neat little application. Great for basically just recording stuff. That's all it does.

Cons: The fact that you can only get it with your soundcard kind of sucks. It has crashed on me a couple of times before, but I think I've managed to fix that now.

Tracks: (2, 4, Multi) - single

Formats Supported: aiff, mp3, apple lossless

Platform: OSX

Cost: freeware

Demo?: (Y/N) Crippled/Hassleware? totally uncrippled

Pros: very neat small simple app that does exactly what it say, very stable, uses very little power

Cons: none that i can think of

Comments: if you just want to record whats coming out of your mixer and you have one computer (mac) this is the way to go.
Audible 6:31 PM - 24 February, 2005
Name: Audacity

Homepage: audacity.sourceforge.net

Tracks: Multi

Formats Supported: MP3 (needs plugin), Ogg, WAV, aiff...

Platform: All (i use osx)

Cost: Free

Demo?: NO

Pros: Open Source, so it's always in development. All the features I needed, filters, wave form editing, normalization, etc. Handles very well... did I say free already? its free.

Cons: I can only compare this to what I've used in the past, which is cooledit, and I see no real difference in power and options.

Comments: i love this thing.
KMXE 9:47 PM - 24 February, 2005
Name: Steinberg Cubase SX3

Homepage: steinberg.net

Tracks: (2, 4, Multi) anything u want, u can do surround sound if u want

Formats Supported: as far as i know, everything under the sun

Platform: ALL (i use WinXP)

Cost: $AUS1300

Demo?: (Y/N)Y

Pros: I use this because i also produce music. If you're a music producer and want to incorporate SSL into your music production, a program like this covers all your needs. Audio & MIDI sequencing, multi channels, plug-ins etc etc For the sake of using SSL with it, u can check levels, u can add FX as u record - almost anything. After you've recorded u can do anything imaginable to the audio files - edit in anyway u can think of.

Cons: Not many.... there's a learning curve, and you'll be involved (whether u like it or not) in the "Which sequencer is better battle? Logic, Pro-Tools, Sonar, Cubase....." they all do the same thing, just differently!!

Comments: It's a great creative program

Pros: Good tool for the price, simple to use.

Cons: Some of the advanced effects don't sound as good as you might expect.

Comments: Similar in some ways to Sound Forge.

Tracks: (2, 4, Multi) Multi, software can do 32 I only have 18 inputs at the moment.

Formats Supported: Pretty much anything but for sure these--
AIFF, MP3, QT, WAV, WMA, WMV, SNDII

Platform:Win or MAC

Cost: 1299 with bundle

Demo?: (Y/N) Crippled/Hassleware? There is a free older version (5.1 I think) that runs on ME/98 or OS 9/8.9.

Pros: If you used the recommended hardware (gateway 7422GX laptop from best buy 1399 works well!), it's solid and somewhat of an industry standard in the recording field. You can do almost anything.

Cons: Damn picky about the computer hardware you use. This is becoming less of an issue now and if you are using a small amount of tracks its really not an issue at all.

Comments: A Digi002R(firewire) may be overkill for just recording mixes. The same software sells with a 2 track input device called an M-box(USB) for $499.
If you are not heavy into recording I wouldn't suggest it. But if you want to go all out then this is not only a good choice but an investment in your technical recording skills.

Name: HarddiskOgg

Homepage: www.fridgesoft.de

Type: mp3/ogg/wav

Platform: Windows

Cost: $0

Demo?: NA

Pros: Very simple to use. I didn't notice any performance hits recording to MP3 while in SSL. But recording to WAV and doing some scratching along with it the CPU is only running between 50-60% on a Celron M with the USB buffer at 1 and no XP tweaks
Cons: none

Comments: You'll want to record to WAV anyway since you'll probably be editing the file. Recording in Ogg takes the biggest performance hit taking my CPU up to 95-100%; then comes MP3 running in the 75-80% range; and the best being WAV.

I have no idea what their Monkey Audio (ape) format is.

Don't know if BassChamber discovered this first but thanks for the find.

Pros: It's the industry standard.

Cons: It's software

Comments: Using protools to record your set is actually a bad idea unless you have a computer that can handle the load. It took a little tweaking, but now I have no problems at all. I use protools for other things as well and like having the 1 applitcation that can do it all.

Crippled/Hassleware? no clue what this means...

Pros: easy to use, decent user interface, umm, my brain is not working effienciently, but there are more pro's, just can't remember them all.

Cons: the version I own, doesn't support midi. Also, it's not Pro Tools (but then again, I don't need anything that powerful for wav & mp3 mixing/editing).

Comments: I own a Pro1, which is a version released a few years back. I've gotten pretty proficient at it and created some complicated medleys, many with 100 or more elements (tracks).

Peak 4 does not support MP3 or MP4 but Peak 5 does.

Platform:
OSX

Cost:
$599.00
(Current retail for Peak 5)

Demo?:
Yes, you can download a fully working 14 day demo. There's also a 'Lite' version at $99.00

Pros:
Does pretty much everything you could want from a stereo audio editor, and it's really fast to work with. Easy to burn CDs with track numbers where you've put markers.

Cons:
It's not cheap. If you'd only use it to record your mixes and burn 'em, get some freeware/shareware.

Comments:
It's the most sophisticated stereo editing program on OSX. Fully customizable toolbar and shortcuts make it lightning-fast.

Name: Sony Vegas

Homepage:
www.sonymediasoftware.com

Tracks: Multi

Formats Supported: Standard Windows formats (WAV, AIFF, MP3, etc.)

Platform: Windows

Cost: $500'ish retail, $190'ish educational discount

Demo?: Yes -- I don't know what limits the demo has

Pros: Same as any multi-track but with video capabilities. Familiar user interface (for anyone using a multi-track program), and fairly stable software base. Track effects, master bus effects, automation (some effects too), and great editing interface.

For me, another pro is that this does NOT look like, nor emulate the look of, a standard mixing console. The software is designed with the standard Windows look. I know some people like the mixing board look, I actually got into this look. *shrug*

Cons: Pricey for retail version, and probably not worth it for people who don't use the video portion.

Comments: I've been a Vegas user since "Vegas Audio" 1.0, and it was this software that allowed me to move from OSC/Bias's Deck software on the Mac to a PC platform. Unfortunately, they dropped their audio only line (after 2.0), so you're essentially buying a video editing app with multi-track audio features. I use either 2.0 (the last "pure audio" Vegas) or 6.0, depending on where I record.

EDU version is affordable, but try it before you buy it because the interface might not be your thing. ;-)
djrisk 12:48 AM - 23 October, 2005
Err, above when I say "familiar user interface", I meant for editing wave forms and not recording.

Formats Supported: as far as i know, everything under the sun

Platform: ALL (i use WinXP)

Cost: Current version is $400-600 US

Demo?: (Y/N)Y

Pros: Layers, Multi tracks, Midi, EFX, Editing, Time Stretch, Pitch adjustments, Normalize Just about anything. This is comparable to Pro Tools at a fraction of the price. Some of the newer studios use Cubase now for much of their work.

Cons: Did you ever see a thicker manual? I printed the thing from the PDF file and I went through my color cartridges LOL
700-900 pages filled two large notebooks. Fortunately it was easy to scan through and For What I use it for I found simple answers sitll it's a steep learning curve for certain functions.

Comments:
Very Strong Edit Capabilities. Doesn't crash much as Far as I know.

Pros: Slick as can be. Small, easy to deal with
Cons: No display so you need to have a little Kreskin in you to figure out what is going on. Easy enough though honestly.
Comments: If you need to rip some vinyl to mp3 or CD, you need this thing. If you need to ALWAYS have a recorder running when you are mix practicing or whatever, you need this thing. If you want to record your gigs without a lot hassle, you need this thing. I am not affiliated with these jokers and most of their products I think are crap, but I love this thing. I got this ting too.
I have a problem though and anyone familiar with it is free to help me out here.

On Mac Panther I did the whole terminal thing to get the alias folder onto your desktop.
Problem is, when I try and open up the alias folder it says I don't have sufficient priviledges to access this folder.

Now, I am the only user/admin on my machine and I've done all the stuff I would think in the Get Info section for the folder, as far as making sure it's unlucked and I am the one who can read/write and so on, what's up?

Oh, I can play it on my iPod also.

Pros: Stable, easy editing, I like the level meters because you can size them to fill a large part of your screen. I try to get the input perfect so I don't need to normalize or anything. You can use VSTs if you want.

Cons: Cost Cost Cost. Audacity is probably just as good for 2 track recording.

Comments: I wouldnt suggest buying this software unless you're doing a lot of manipulation of sound files. And even then, I would say get cubase sx because it does multitrack and midi. Wavelab has a ton of features I don't use.

Pros: Very simple straight forward easy to navigate and organize MP3 player that for 150 dollars you get 5 gigs of space and can record from any line in source at as high as 160kbps~44khz MP3! I thought quite a good deal.

Cons: no record level adjust... however the trick is simple watch your levels on your mixer stay outta the red which you should be doing anyway.

u pick one up Ende ? hows tha sound quality?

thanks in advance for tha feedback

- dj mike coquilla
Ende 4:17 PM - 7 March, 2006
Coquilla yes I have one now its great I'll go to clubnights and see DJ's I know plug the little unit and it is super small into the back of the mixer at the club and email them their mix later. It's great! The sound quality is 160kbps~44khz which in Soundforge is labeled as "CD Transparent Quality". When Im at home my setup is straight into my desktop anyway so i normally record just straight into soundforge. I was impressed to find out that after comparing recordings straight into soundforge with the ones i've done with the Zen Neeon there really seemed to be no difference to the quality. I know the IRiver records also but i dont know how much it is. I remember researching mp3 players when i was deciding on purchasing this one and If I recall it was a good bit more pricey but something tells me it had a considerable amount more storage space. I think i just couldnt afford it at the time. Anyway great investment though im very happy with the Zen.

hit radio shack and grab a RCA 2-1 connector like my beautiful picture^^, make sure that the side with one cable does not have the ring around the connector, like the ones used to hook up to your tv, the cable should be able to fit into your cd or mp3 player, it cost me less than 10$ (canadian!!lol) hook it from your mixer master output or recording out put into your line in jack or your mic input jack on the computer. from there double click your sound adjustment icon at the bottom, then click options, properties, adjust volume for ( )playback
(•)recording
then select line-in or microphone and adjust acordingly. just remember, the recording control is for the loudness it RECORDS not necessarily how loud you hear it, for volume you gotta screw with line in or mic playback settings.

I just use soundforge. works wonders. You have to be careful with your microsoft settings tho, or else you'll record AOL instant message tones - which happened to me one time lolz.

LOL yeah Make sure you turn off anything that makes chimes or anything!!... I still get mixes where I open up folders outside of serato to grab tracks I forgot to put in a crate, or just a request and you get those microsoft clicks!! LOL

Sound Forge IS Awsome, the down side is you can layer sound effects post production, like Your in the Mix Power 106.7 KMX...

Oh well guess I'll have to shell out a couple grand for a MAC and Protools.

its got a bulit in audio converter, but it cant convert to mp3 in basic form, thats the only drawback. other than that, an excellent bit of software for recording

Just a quick message...

I mainly make mixtapes for me and my friends and have done a few house parties...i am still in my first year so im a newbie, but i have found though that Cool Edit Pro 2.0 is a good solid program for recording my mixes...i can record a whole set, no matter how long it is...and then afterwards divide it into tracks fairly easy...saves in almost any format...i prefer .wav...anyways, hope this helps...

**it is also good for going back and editing mess ups...lol...(like i said, im still new and learning...thanks for all the tips i have picked up on these forums too....yeah)

HOT TIP!!!!!
I haven't seen this posted as of yet. If you are wanting to break your mix into single tracks here's how. No matter what software you us to record you can still do this one tip. If you have the newest version of Nero. Do everything as you would normally do it when making a cd. Add your mix and then highlight it and click on the property setting to the far right. Once you do that you will see your mix file. Click play and at the end or begining of the next song click index. Once you have indexed your file hit the split button and bam you have your tracks marked. Hit apply and you will see every song you had in your mix. Now just click burn and it's a done deal. Hope this helps some folks out.

Formats Supported: See Below!

Platform: Windows

Cost: Free

Demo?: Full version

Pros: Light CPU load! Perfect for using with Serato. Easy to use, easy to launch, no install required. Just execute the .exe file!

Cons: Non yet.

Comments: Compared to Sound Forge which I thought would be the lightest this thing absolutely kicks its butt with Fridgesoft recorder only taking 5% of my CPU power vs. 25% with Sound Forge. This is defenitely the way to go.

Features:

> Real-time encoding with bitrates from 32kbit/sec. up to 320kbit/sec.
> Stereo or mono recording from 8kHz to 48kHz
> Automatic numbering of output files
> Can be placed in the systray and activated by a single click
> Smart on-the-fly normalization for low-volume sources
> Uses the high quality, patent free Ogg Vorbis encoding engine. Ogg Vorbis easily outperforms MP3 in sound quality, especially at lower bit rates.
> LAME MP3 encoder compatible. However, due to patent issues HarddiskOgg ist not distributed with the LAME encoding DLL. If you want MP3 support, fetch LAME_ENC.DLL from the web, but make sure you have the appropriate rights for doing so.
> Command line mode for easy integration or scheduled recordings
> No fuss or stupid skinned interface, just works.
> HarddiskOgg is FREEWARE!

defjamblaster 7:29 PM - 7 November, 2006
starting at the beginning of the very first song, move to a point where youd like the track to change, then press apple+B. this puts a little red flag at the bottom of the track. when youve marked all the songs, then 'export multiple' under file. may be good to have a folder to put them in. i use jam to burn because it puts no hesitations between the track during burning, unlike itunes, toast, and many others.

Seriusly guys , all the software in the wolrd can not , EVER compare with the CD recorder ( using CD R Audio ). The quality of sound , well lets just say , it´s even worh comparing with the quality of set recorded on the PC with some software ( except for MAYBE Cubase or sound forge. The only thing that is positive with recording with softwares , directly on you PC is that you can record longer sets. But then again , when you send a promo , do you realy need to send 3-4 hours ? So, Philips Audio Compact Disc Recorder CDR 760 and CDR ( for audio ) is by far the best thing to own. If you fuck up , just stop , erase , and start over again =) And if you still want you set on PC , put it in , copy to HD , change to MP3 format =) and it´s a go. Quality is the key boys and girls :)
AmphetaMarinE 2:36 AM - 8 November, 2006
erm....
recording uncompressed audio through software is the highest possible quality you can get....
As long as your cables are quality, but that issue occurs no matter what your recording medium....

I mean, My sound card is capable of recording at 96KHz... double that of the cd recorder... so I really cant see any reason to buy your phillips cd audio recorder...

The post above is not factual, and merely represents John Nasties opinion.

There are many software based solutions which will offer not only equivalent quality to a CD recorder, but superior quality also.

Peace.
defjamblaster 3:49 AM - 8 November, 2006
agreed...and, whos to say the purpose of recording is to send a promo (whatever that means). i like to record my parties live, with crowd noise and everything; changing cds would miss too much audio while switching. CDR is the worst method for my needs, and offers no editing features;no track marks, etc, can be added once the cdr is recorded. worst...option...ever! :)
defjamblaster 3:57 AM - 8 November, 2006
...AND, if u mess up, u hafta toss the cd and start over! cdrw doesnt play on most audio players, to my knowledge, so i cant see how that would be useful to record to, UNLESS you would then import into the computer, which means you coulda just gone straight into the computer into a lossless format in the first place!
and for the record, i have that philips recorder, good to master the finished product to...

Sorry man... I have to agree with AmphetaMarinE & defjamblaster. If that disk recorder works for you, well then more power to ya. Maybe you just haven't had much luck with software...

As for me, I always record sets in an uncompressed format and I see no reason, as far as quality, to switch to anything else. Not only is it excellent quality, but it's much more convenient IMO, and it gives you the freedom edit as necessary.

If you fuck up , just stop , erase , and start over again =) And if you still want you set on PC , put it in , copy to HD , change to MP3 format =) and it´s a go. Quality is the key boys and girls :)

Please take the above back!

OK i give up =) you guys are right =) It was me talking BS =) shame on me =) No seriusly , i tested to record on my PC ( not the laptop ) and it sounded , well ok . I think it was a bit problem , cos i have soundcard integrated on the motherboard , but with a proper soundcard , it´s the shit. SO , throw the tomatos on me =) and i have tested som of the softwares, and , in my opinion , the easiest and best was Acid Pro =)

Today, HarddiskOgg the nice simple light recorder that I have been preaching about for a few weeks took a dump after a 5 hour set. So pissed. I went to the taskbar to close the program and as soon as I right-clicked it dissapeared. I went to try to play the resulting 2GB file of the set and nothing will open it.

Any advice?
Dale 6:53 AM - 14 November, 2006
harddiskogg was unreliable when I was testing it for recording 5 hour sets. It was unpredictable when it would fail, but it would fail. I tried to also use the command line params to control the file sizes but it still failed.

Audacity continues to be my free software recorded of choice. It hasn't failed on me yet.

Dale, but isn't audacity a pretty large program/wav editor? I am just trying to keep the CPU as stress-free as possible.

Let us know how much CPU does it consume... Thanks!

Use Audacity. Simple , not CPU intensive , can do a LOT , and it's free free free!
DJ BIS 2:55 AM - 20 November, 2006
Well, CPU intensive is different depending on who's CPU you are comparing.

i dont know if audio recorder is only for mac, sorry.
Dale 9:25 AM - 24 November, 2006
CPU usage for any program is really hard to judge. I guess you could measure it in CPU cycles for the app, but I don't really have that type of measurement tool. A % of CPU doesn't tell much since that's dependent on your hardware's relative capabilities.

I can say that on my 1.8GHz Pentium M laptop, I can run audacity recording two channels (left/right) and serato at the same time. Its more an issue of disk bandwidth. So if I ever do this on the same PC (rare), then I use an external drive for the record and my internal has the MP3's. I don't want that hard drive head to get behind.

As far as scalability, I recently used Audacity to record a 12 channels for a 5 hour show. Yes...12 channels for 5 hours straight. I used a firewire audio bus to capture the audio at 24-bit 48KHz and an external drive over USB2 to store the data. All this on my laptop which was only running Audacity. My CPU was humming around 65%. Never crashed in my prior testing to get ready for the show. Didn't crash in the show. Super solid.
DJ MykChek 2:47 AM - 28 November, 2006
So... reading through this lenghty email.. I have concluded that Audacity is the best & easiest way to record.
My question is...

1) When recording... I don't have line inputs on my laptop, just Mic input. By going from my mixer to the Mic input and recording with Audacity, will it be recording in MONO?

And.. if so...

2) Is there a way of recording in stereo if I do not have line inputs on my laptop?

Thanks for any replies!!!
Dale 6:43 AM - 30 November, 2006
1. yep, you'll be hitting up the mono world. And...it'll sound crappy. The electrical 'specs' of a microphone input connection are different from a 'line level' input connection. Its not worth your time.

Its better to buy an el cheapo usb input box. m-audio has one for about $80 and Edirol for $84. Or you could get a phono preamp->usb from ArtProAudio called USB Phono Plus for $90.

Think about the time and money you'll save. If you're worth at least $10/hour, then in 9 hours, you'll have paid for this new box. If you don't then you'll end up recording everything all over.

I have read through ALL of these and have noticed that at least a couple of times people have asked why it is that you cannot just record from USB since the scratch amp is connected to the computer.

All the high quality audio is obviously going through the computer, why can you not capture it? Dale (2 posts above)mentioned to get ArtProAudio called USB Phono Plus to record on USB, but why is this needed since the audio going through the USB (after it comes from scratch amp) is digital and not in Phono.

Furthermore, not that I am endorsing Final scratch since I am a Serato user but FS2 can record with out any additional hookups. the scratch amp is only connected through the fire wire and you can record directly. WHY CAN YOU NOT DO THIS WITH SERATO OR IF YOU CAN...SOMEONE TELL ME HOW? I could care less about the program to do it with I just want that ability.
Dale 12:48 PM - 20 December, 2006
the signal coming from the SL1 is a digital signal over USB, buy its not a quality Analog->Digital converter solution. The Digital->Analog is great. So spending $100 for a controller is a small cost if you're going to digitize. The SL1 was not originally designed and built for high quality record digitization. Instead, it was designed for high-quality frequency recognition so it can understand the control signal on the vinyl.

Ya just can't make it what it isn't. But with what it *IS*...the SL1 and Serato are REALLY GREAT at.

Later hardware from Serato like the 57SL was designed for digitizing music and it or something like the Phono Plus are a good choice.

Excellent mix recording while using SSL at the same time on one Laptop (Macbook Pro)

With "Fission" you can split up your mix (AIF and AAC files are recommended) into each played click in seconds. Works great and is cheaper in a bundle together with Audio Hijack Pro.

Harddisk ogg recorder (www.fridgesoft.de) to me is better than audacity as far as using system resources. you can run this program at the same time as serato with only 512 mb of ram and a 1gig processor (pentium 3) and u will not experience any flaws. i also did this test with audacity and i had to change the setup in serato and then it still wasnt running the way it should have.

It could be but to be honest I don't know what it could be causing that. I saw a few posts on their support forum of people having the same problem. The last release for that program was in 2004, so I guess as technology moves along I ought to expect the program to become more problematic anyways.

How is this one working for you Bis?

I'm really surprised ‘peak input limiting’ options haven’t been discussed. MY problem is monitoring the input level in warez such as Audacity. Nothing worse than going 'over' in the middle of a set!

I may try Easy Hi-Q Recorder though... You can limit the input level in the cpanel it appears.

Alright, I have been using Hi-Q Recorder for a week now and the results have been outstanding. Payment and download of the software was quick and painless. The person running roemersoftware seems to be on top of the customers needs, so no problems on that end. I paid via Paypal and in a few minutes I had an email with the code, etc.

Installation was a standard issue, quick and easy. The program seems to be very small as far as actual space requirements is concerned.

I have recorded to constant 320K (variable rates are available as well) this whole week setting my option to 80 minute pieces that the software automatically "cuts" for you (no need for intervention of any kind!). There are other file output settings but to me those setting worked well in case I need to quickly burn the MP3 files to CD.

Stability has been solid, even while running SSL and a few other low CPU consumption programs in the background. The files sound great and eventhough I could record to WAV, I really don't see the need right now. Saving disk space is more of a concern.

Another welcome feature is the small footprint of the recorder's interface. It only has the most important buttons and features on the front. No clutter and no extra baggage that you don't need on the front.

Probably my favorite feature on it is the fact that I can quickly minimize SSL to check recording labels in an instant. The levels are displayed on the interface without needing to touch any buttons or anything.

Feels like my $30 have been well spent. I have nothing to complain about to this point!

Updates for the software are free of charge and I believe there is a 30 day money-back guarantee when you purchase.

Windows users, feel free to take a look. Peace.

Sound like your hardware is peaking out bro. That program you used is very easy on the CPU, it takes 5% off mine which is beautiful. Adding some RAM will help in some areas. Serato alone requires at least 512MB I believe, so you might be cutting it real close.

how do you convert to mp3 with audacity? it don't work on my mac its not an option
defjamblaster 5:40 PM - 9 May, 2007
the line in depends on your computer model; some dont have one, so u can use a usb device such as imic to add one for about $30...to convert to mp3, softwares must have license from the people who own that technology; since audacity is free, they dont include that option, but YOU can add it by downloading the appropriate 'lamelib' file from the audacity website. once u download it, store it somewhere, and audacity will ask u to navigate to it next time u try to 'export as an mp3' under the 'file' menu. you'll only have to do this once.
defjamblaster 5:45 PM - 9 May, 2007
...looking at your profile, i believe you have at least a macbook; the line in is to the left of the headphone jack on the left side of your computer. use a standard 1/8 inch to stereo phono cable to connect your mixer or whatever...in system preferences, select 'sound', then 'input', then select 'line in'. from there, adjust volumes accordingly so as not to get distortion.
Jim 4:31 AM - 10 May, 2007

DJ Plastik 4:02 AM - 13 May, 2007
Im on pc defjamblaster.
defjamblaster 3:58 AM - 14 May, 2007
ok, youre gonna hafta figure out if your computer has a line in based on the model. in standard audio scenarios, a mic input and line input are vastly different and not readily interchangeable because a mic needs much more pre-amplification than a line level signal. so, i dont THINK that a mic in would be the same as a line in. if anyone else knows about this, please step in...otherwise, u may investigate a usb interface similar to the griffin imic to add a line input. i used one for a several months and it worked fine. u may just want to try it out and see if it works thru the mic in, just keep the levels super low so u dont damage anything, and see if the recording is distorted. if so, mic in wont work 4u.
DJ Plastik 3:11 AM - 16 May, 2007
Thanks alot defjamblaster. Really appreciate the info. Ill give the mic in a try and see what happens.
DJ LTIZZZLE 11:52 AM - 18 May, 2007
Dj Plastik. I would say the line is the same as the headphones one. Or you can get a creative sound card from Jr.com for faily cheap. I believe it's a sound blaster external card which would work just fine. Hope that helps

Audacity and Serato SL1.......What more can you ask for.
Gor 1:44 AM - 1 June, 2007
A few other people have mentioned audacity and i use it too, so ill put it in the format the moderator guy wanted

Name: Audacity

Homepage: audacity.sourceforge.net

Tracks: (2, 4, Multi) Multi

Formats Supported: Aif, Au, Mp3, Ogg

Platform: Windows - 9x, 2000, Xp and Vista, Mac OS X

Cost: Free!!!

Demo?: (Y/N) Crippled/Hassleware? No

Pros: Very good features and stability for the price.

Cons: Lacks some of the fancy features and overall polish of paid software aimed at a similar market.

Comments: The pros far outweigh the cons.

Name: Sony Sound Forge 7

Homepage: www.sonycreativesoftware.com

Tracks: Multi, I think...

Formats Supported: MP3, AAC, RA, and a bunch more...

Platform: Windows and Mac

Cost: $300

Demo?: Yes

Pros: After your mix is recorded, you can do edits directly to the mix. I also like the waveform display.

Cons: Taxes system resources so much that you can't run Serato and record with Sound Forge on the same machine without performance compromises. For instance, there may be skips with recording. Mind you, I have a Pentium 4-M machine, so this may not be the case with faster, multi-core processors and/or faster hard drives.

Comments: Cool program.

Name: Adobe Audition

Homepage: www.adobe.com

Tracks: (2, 4, Multi) Up to 64 tracks

Formats Supported: everything!! including mp3, but does not support m4p

Platform: Windows XP

Cost: $99 for me when i upgraded from Cool Edit Pro

Demo?: (Y/N) Crippled/Hassleware? Full Version

Pros: Has an unlimited selection of effects, echo's, loops, pitch adjustment, keylock adjustment, you name it, it has it!

Cons: Adjusting pitch is calcuated at a "100% = normal BPM for the track" so when adjusting BPM to match certain things, you must do the math... Example, if the track you're using is 95BPM, and u want to speed it up to 98BPM, you must move the slider to "103%", (3 BPM higher)

Other than that, nothing bad to report! I also suggesting turning off all of the "snapping to cue" type features that are on by default.

Comments: I will never use anything else. Its very hard to teach yourself everything, but once you learn it, the possibilities are endless.

Name: Fridgesoft Audio Recorder (Low Resource Demand with Serato, this is the real deal folks!)

Homepage: www.fridgesoft.de

Tracks: Single

What did you do to get your Mac to run correctly? I have a Macbook Pro 2Ghz Core Duo and my computer slows down, tremendously. I want to run the music to an external but I still have this issue. This is before I even start recording. I keep getting an error message stating I need to check my clock source and sample rates are correct. I am trying to come straight out of my mixer. All of this is new to me, I have never used ProTools. Any help would be maaaaaadly appreciated!

But i Record my mixxes LIVE, wit a TASCAM CD recorder.
No editing, just gotta get it right the first time. Good practice I think.
dj_KaSE 7:32 AM - 18 July, 2007
I thought about that today, X-Scape.

How much do those go for?

Reason I contemplated using one of those is because after I record my mix, I have to go back in there and cut it via Nero Burning Rom so that the mix is split across different tracks.

Does that Tascam let you splice up the mix in real time? I hear some CD recorders do that...

I would imagine it'd be like the good old days where you hit record on your tape player, bust out a nice little mix, hit stop and BAM, throw that shit on your CD player just like that.
X-Scape 2:25 PM - 18 July, 2007
I dont think it does it.... or maybe u would have to hit a button to go to next track.
But I just slip it into Cool Edit and Track it. Ispent about 300.00 on sale.
But I do know, peeps always say my mixes sound WAY better than theirs recording on software.

So is it possible to use both SSL and Pro Tools on a MacBook at the sametime??? My old PC died and I used to use Cool Edit. I have my Mac Book just for Serato... now need to record multi-track style mixtapes... Should I get an M-Box w/ Pro Tools... or will it even work? Should I just get a serparate computer to record and produce on???? Any HELP or ADVICE would be much appreciated.
defjamblaster 12:50 AM - 6 August, 2007
i always add my 2cents on this issue...for ease & convenience, use something BASIC to record, and use something like pro tools to EDIT that recording. PT uses alot of resources, pulls that processor pretty tough. its really best used with its own dedicated processor, thats how major users of PT run it. i always reccomend the FREE recording softwares like audio recorder. since all it does is record, it uses very little of your processor power while serato is running. audacity is cool also, but it has stopped on me once while recording a live party.

Pros: PT: Awesome quality; industry standard - Acid: Very easy to use. Great for beginners of recording.

Cons: PT: Unless you went to Audio school, or bought a book on how to use, don't plan on jumping in and using everything. And you better have a hook up on plug-ins cuz you'll need them. If not, start saving, they are about $700 to $7,000 each. That and its a CPU hog, so you'd better have a good computer. Sony Acid: Not the best for high detailed editting. Cant complain for the money though. Pro Tools plug ins work with Sony so I guess that'd be a PRO

ok guys so here's the deal. I downloaded the audacity software to record my mixes, but it really sounds or record low. I plugged the rca cable into my mac book pro but i still can't figured out. Same as audio recorder, I mean it sounds better than audacity but it's still low. Are they supposed to sound like that? Do i need an usb cable?
defjamblaster 3:00 AM - 25 September, 2007
in audio recorder, either turn up the source's output (your mixer's record out), or slide the audio recorder volume slider to the right, or in mac's system preferences/sound, turn up the input volume to the computer.

you have to normalize the tracks (raises the audio as much as possible without clipping)
defjamblaster 4:32 PM - 24 October, 2007
normalizing should be a last resort when it comes to gaining volume, it doesnt actually add bits of info, whereas turning up the input while you record does. you're adding more of the source signal that way.

As long as you playing without distortion in the channels it sound great (except when you mixing...)

Tonight I was trying desperately to record something from Tape Out of a mixer. I used the same settings in Audacity (Microphone, lowest volumes) as I used to record my mixes at home, but I never got it to work. I use the new Tascam DP-02 portastudio. The sound quality is CD quality uncompressed and I do not have to figure it out on a damn computer. Made many mix cd's and play them at the radio station.
flipmo8064 4:29 AM - 8 March, 2008

DJ Mic 11:00 PM - 26 March, 2008
You can always record into your computer using your serato interface. If you want to be cheap.
Zero Day 1:10 AM - 27 March, 2008
How?
Im not trying to be cheap i just honestly dont have any money right now.. Spend ALL of it on serato..
Im living pay check to pay check..

so how do i record using the serato interface?
DJ LTIZZZLE 12:33 PM - 2 April, 2008
@DJ Ell? Do you have any gigs lined up? If so, just do a couple and cop the ttm 57. You can record into that or you can spend like 80 for a M-audio device, but that's just more Gear..
Zero Day 7:19 PM - 2 April, 2008
yeah i got 1 fris friday and another this Saterday

but i got a Numark dm 1050 mixer.. peace of crap..
so i don't have a rain mixer..
right now im using some free cheap software called Freecoder, wave pad and Audasity..

but i could use a new progam that has quality recording.
DJ Mic 7:38 PM - 2 April, 2008
You do not need a Rane 57 to record your sets on Computer. I recorded a majority of my Vinyl and mixes using the SL-1. On the left side of your Serato screen above the crates, you will see a small arrow. Click that and check deck/line 1 and deck/line 2 (I do not recall the names). When your ready to record, click the RED (Circle)and your ready to go. Just watch your recording volume meter and when you finish recording, click the red circle again. It's saved in your scratch live folder. Might want to rename it and convert.

I'm sneaking on my job computer. Hope I explained it right. Lol.
a DJ 9:50 PM - 6 April, 2008
^ Umm how does that record the volume levels you use on your mixer? Serato doesn't keep track of that. How would it keep track of whether you are using phono or line on your mixer?

I'm talking about recording mixes, not ripping vinyl.
DJ Mic 12:54 AM - 7 April, 2008
I gave up on you.. Next tread. =)
a DJ 6:13 AM - 9 April, 2008
Does someone care to explain his post? As far as I know you can't record sets with Serato if you're using it for the set.
deepdjdanny 2:03 PM - 27 April, 2008
serato's not a sequencer.
WuaKeeN 11:00 PM - 29 April, 2008

Any simple software like hdogg that works with vista 64 bits?¿

thanks
wildchild6907 10:41 PM - 4 June, 2008
I am using Adobe Audition version 1.5 to record my mixes, it was free for me and it does not take up any RAM on my computer, it even does not interfere with my serato ScratchLIVE when it is on the 10 setting, it has all the features of a regular studio, in my opinion get the demo and see for yourself.............it works great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
djmassi 3:45 PM - 5 June, 2008
Wildchild, can you record mixes on the laptop that you are playing off of at the same time? I too use Adobe Audition and was thinking of running the booth out back to the laptop to record live sets but wasnt' sure how that would affect the functionality of Serato. Haven't had time to test it outside the club....

DJ Massi
wildchild6907 10:12 PM - 5 June, 2008
Yes, you can run serato and adobe audition at the same time, it also depends how much RAM you have in your computer, but you can adapt the program to make them both work without skipping. But it is a good idea about the live session, I never actually tried it myself but it should not be a problem at all. I will try it myself in a couple of days.
djmassi 2:44 AM - 9 June, 2008
I have 2 GB of RAM but was thinking of adding a 3rd just so I wouldn't have to sweat it. Yeah, def. not something I want to try live in the club, I'll have to set up my stuff and give it a shot.
Thanks!

Massi

I just recently purchased pro tools le 7.3 w/ mbox mini....still getting used to it can anyone tell me how to make "tracks" like for a cd in other words i did a 60 min mix and i need to track it up when im done mixing down
defjamblaster 5:25 AM - 12 June, 2008
pro tools does a bad job of this for continuos mixes. i mix down from pro tools to a stereo wav file, then use audacity to place the track marks, THEN burn it in jam. going straight from pro tools puts slight stutters between each track, not acceptable for mixes.
djtitoluv 3:49 AM - 13 June, 2008
Thanks but i might as well go back to adobe audition using the mbox mini
defjamblaster 5:07 AM - 13 June, 2008
yeah, pro tools is designed mainly for editing.
DJ BIS 11:00 AM - 13 June, 2008
So is audition. no?
defjamblaster 5:05 PM - 13 June, 2008
i am only knowledgeable about pro tools and audacity.
djtitoluv 6:22 AM - 16 June, 2008
I called someone who deals with pro tools and they told me pro tools isnt designed for making tracks like for a cd (continous mix) i tired so i just got sony sound forge to do it
DJ BIS 9:51 AM - 16 June, 2008
CD architect is the best for that. But then again this thread is about software for RECORDING your mixes.
Mattatya 2:26 AM - 18 June, 2008
I use xitel INport USB recorder. It runs about 50 bucks and have been recording good quality WAV for two years with it. I have had no problem running Serato and Recording on the same laptop. It is a simple aplication.
djtitoluv 3:05 PM - 4 July, 2008
Does anyone know why adobe audition wont recognize my mbox mini??
DJ TLS 10:22 PM - 4 July, 2008
I use a Tascam SD Recorder. Works great!
DJ Mic 3:57 PM - 7 July, 2008
Same here, Love the Tascam SD recorder... Feels good not to worry about a Hard Drive crash. LOL. Clarity is like a CD.
JuneT 7:54 AM - 18 July, 2014
Hi my name is June
my partner is looking for a best free program to use to record my mixes my mixtrack pro came with tractor le 2 but I need a program so I can record from my console as there is no rec button on the program plz help iv been surchin for so long
DJ Mic 10:36 AM - 18 July, 2014
Serato DJ can capture recordings of the mix output for most controllers*. Click the REC button to open the Recording Panel in Serato DJ. This is located in the top left hand area of the main screen.

Download Serato DJ.
DJ Tecniq 4:39 PM - 18 July, 2014
SL3 for audio or Screenflow for video mixes is what I use cause I don't have ME yet and Serato DJ/Video is Shit for recording anyways. And I'm still using Scratchlive cause again Serato DJ is Shit!! No wonder it's mainly for controllers = Shit😊
