Recording MIC - am I missing something?

NdB 11:13 AM - 15 January, 2007
Back in the old days of SL1 ;) The MIC routed through the SL1 box and I could record a phrase (with the mic OFF on the mixer), drop it on a deck then scratch with it etc.

Now I'm on the 57 I can't seem to do that. Am i missing something or is there no way to record the mic without it going out of the speakers on a 57?

Sh.....t, you are right. T

he problem is that if you check the schematics at www.rane.com <- click, last page, mic+aux+flexfx are combined and then run through one ADC. So the only option would be to mute the ADC for playback. Should be possible technically. Question is how does Rane prioritize this feature.

Yeah - that's what i figured. Just wondered if there was a way to mute this before it hits the main mix that I hadn't seen....
Like you say, it should be possible with a firmware upgrade. At least I know I'm not going mad...

OK - now am i reading this right? on the DSP diagram the AUX record output comes BEFORE the internal effects processor (in fact it's parallel to the internal FX Send)so if I record the aux channel in SSL I should get that pre-fx. Hence I should be able to set the filter so extreme that it cuts out most of the soud and record un-effected sound from the mic (i.e. aux) fine without it going out...

However, in practice the record feed is post-FX. Am i reading this wrong or is the diagram wrong? I notice that the record feeds for all the other channels are very clearly post-FX but pre Flex-FX on the diagram (and, I assume, in practice!)

The diagram is definitely wrong, good spot.

Check this image www.nobspangle.f2s.com

The PGM record output is highlighted in red, you can see that it is after the effects insert. This means when you record you are also recording the effects (which is true).

The Aux bus record output is highlighted in green, this is shown as being before the effects insert (at the same point as the effects send). This is wrong, if you record the aux bus with effects applied you will also record the effect.

Gotcha, thanks for taking the time to explain.
