At The Club: adjusting from battle to standard style or vice versa

just wondering if any of you guys ever had trouble adjusting to battle style to standard style and vice versa. some clubs have the decks built in which won't allow you to move the decks. it doesn't bother me much expect on some occasions. the only set-ups i truly hate is when there is a 19" mixer with the tables behind the mixer requiring you to reach over the mixer. ya know, house style.
i had one guest dj open the other night who complained about my battle style set-up. he said he can't spin that way, blah blah blah and wanted the mixer to the right of both turntables. so i basically told him to suck it up and do his set and that it's only 10 o'clock. then complained how his djm-600 is better than my 56 & efx combo, blah blah blah....

If I know the club I'm going to be spinnin' at has a set up which can't be turned battle style, then I bring my 1200's and mixer and set up next to it. Simple.

exactly. if you cant mix with what you got to work with, then you dont deserve to be spinning there at all. or you suck, bottom line.

eh you always gotta adapt.. (or don't get paid)
However the WORST is clubs that have the turntables at like chest level and the mixer on a separate platform down by your crotch.

Yeah, I thought it was weird that a club I did had a "house" style setup (decks behind the mixer), but you learn to deal. It meant I couldn't scratch, which is in some senses goood I guess 'cause sometimes I go overboard with that when I play out (like a nervous tick or something :P).
To be honest, I was just happy that the equipment actually WORKED. (Well, it didn't work perfectly--the pitch sliders were a little dodgy--but again, you learn to deal.)

Oh wells, You gotta do what ya gotta do. Cant always get what ya want. I prefer battle style, with a battle mixes any given day of the week. My residency now has a Pioneer DJM-600, which is ok, since the tables are battle mode.

Its this small spot called "El Rincon" on 16th and Harrison. Its a Cuban Restaurant & Club! Mainly Reggae/Dancehall and Drum&Bass events pop off in there. The setup is nuts so more recently, The promoters of the night bring out a battle setup and place it on stage, like this farm1.static.flickr.com
I dunno how DJ's are supposed to mix on it. For the main part, they usually put CDJ's on those wooden panels so the DJ's use the turntables as CD holders... You saw how I ran the Serato on it tho. ha!

DJ d.range... that's GHETTO!!!!!! Who would be stupid enough to set up something like that. I bet someone who ISN'T a dj to begin with. :)
and thanks J_Static... I rather bring my own mixer with the SL1 pre attached and my 1200's than put up with questionable setups, whether they're just not something I like to mix in or just crap that doesn't even work properly. I HATE BAD SURPRISES.

Nothing beats just plugging in a USB and going for broke on the decks... Making club owners change, Thats another story. Alot of them are on that "well, I bought them damn CDJ1000's you DJ's wanted, What else yall need??!!??" Fuck a CDJ, IMHO!

my favorite is called the "SUBMARINE"
theres a gigantic-ass 4 foot long rotary mixer with the turntables suspended on super-duper-sensitive-trampoline-like springs that are so far apart that i have to take a taxi to get from one deck to the other.
its an added bonus when theyre placed so high off the ground that i need a ladder just to reach the pitch control. not to mention a frickin parascope to even see what the damn crowd is doing or if there is one at all.
who the hell designs these booths anyway?
is there something thats happening in these paticular booths that is SOOOO much more important than djing that it actually necessitates a design such as the one i just described?
someone please explain this to me?
its like some kind of sick joke!

This is when I played upstairs in the hiphop area for CLANDESTINE in San Jose, Johnny V's... Unsure if they got that setup anymore, but it was ok.. just trippy that it would move when youd juggle or double up tracks.

It's like: "Dude is this a sick joke or are you guys into making a DJ's nite HELL......"
Don't get me wrong I can and will adapt to ANYTHING, ANYWHERE AND ANYTIME......
But if it's a nice spot, it's kinda like "WTF" is my response

im pretty adaptable too, but some stuffs just plain dumb.
no, its more of a composite description of unnecessary frustrations ive encounted in the past.
its good cause it elimintates low freq feedback but its a bitch when swings back n forth. all they have to do is tie it to floor diagonally from each corner at the bottom of the coffin which would cut down on most of the swing.
some people just dont think it all the way through.

I'm not an all out tablist either but scratching is an integral part of my rutine so it does blow when the setup is not conducive to your style BUT sometimes you just gotta suck it up and deal with it. Most of us don't have enough pull to demand the type of set up we want. In my opinion a good DJ can adjust to ALMOST any situation. So F the compainers.....Just means you got a long way to go.

It's one thing if the other DJ is asking for a reasonable piece of kit (back to the original topic), like a CDJ-1000, but are also content with an 800 (b/c there are soooooooo many differences between the two), but if they simply won't play on the 800 for some unknowing reason, and they aren't a big-name star with an equipment rider in their contract to back it up, then sounds like they don't want to get paid...
Now, to the slightly off-topic but more fun discussion: Ghetto set-ups are the worst. There is this one place in Asheville (237) that used to have an office desk with the amp sitting on the floor where your legs are supposed to go if you are using the desk properly, and with the decks (which both had jacked-out messed up pitch controls) sitting on cinder blocks on the top of the desk, with the mixer set between. The monitor was this total-crap little speaker that was sitting on a stool behind you, since sound aimed at the back of your head is easier??? to hear (I know some of you might say to just move the stool with the monitor, but there just wasn't room to put it anywhere else...).

I try to keep it Battle style if at all possible. I have played a few times when it was not set up battle style. It sucks, but you gotta make the best of a bad situation sometimes. After all as a DJ you gotta adapt ya know. ...But I hate Non- Battle Style.
