Whitelabel files slow down my Windows Explorer

KMXE 11:51 AM - 11 January, 2007
Is it just me, or is it that when you open a normal windows folder which contains Whitelabel tracks, it takes much longer for the folder to "completely" open? i don't know how to best describe this, but if I open my folder which only contains Whitelabel tracks, it takes forever for explorer to display all the info (info in the columns such as Artist, Title or whatever else you choose).

When i open another folder with no whitelabel tracks, it opes instaneously no matter how many tracks are in there.

i burnt all my whitelabel files to move them from my internet computer to Scratch Live Laptop.... I opened the folder (it took forever), then i tried to select all and choose properties to see how many tracks there were (i could not get this open at all), then i tried to copy all the tracks to a folder and it basically froze.

i tested my laptop by opening another folder on the disc which did not contain whitelabel files, and bam - i was able to do all the above and then some.

Is it just me? or does anyone else experience this?

Do you have "Duration" as a column in Explorer? That seemed to be what was taking a long time to display for me...
Matt Hite 9:12 PM - 11 January, 2007
yikes...
D.J. Ness 4:26 AM - 6 August, 2009
I used to have no problems opening my white label net folder in window's explorer, but now every time i try and open it my laptop starts to freeze up. the mouse still moves around for a while but when i click on things outside of explorer nothing happens. eventually the mouse stops moving. hitting ctr alt delete does nothing, so does hitting the power button. the only way i can get it restarted is to pull the battery out (i tried letting it sit for about a half hour but that didn't work either).

the same thing happens when i use the search function and it gets to the white label folder. it looks like it's still searching (the little green blocks still slide from side to side in the left panel), but nothing responds to keyboard or mouse commands.

Hi KMXE and D.J. Ness,

Which version of Windows are you running? Are your whitelabel files on an internal or external hard drive?
D.J. Ness 6:35 PM - 6 August, 2009
I'm using XP professional version 2002 service pack 3, with my files on the internal hard drive
System specs: Intel Core 2 duo
T9400 @ 2.53GHz
2.53 GHz, 1.95 GB of RAM

my laptop is also set up so that Scratch Live is installed on a separate partition that's used only for djing (i.e. internet, including wireless, disabled and no other programs installed). i'm trying to open the folder in my regular partition, which has worked fine in the past.
D.J. Ness 3:24 AM - 13 August, 2009
I found the specific track that is caused the trouble: Enur feat. Natasja "Calabria 2008". I played all the files one by one and after I got a little half way through this track the audio cut out; then scratch live froze. I had to open winamp and delete the file from the add files box (it was the only way I could open the folder).
D.J. Ness 9:25 PM - 13 August, 2009
p.s. The Enur track also made my regular partition freeze if there weren't any click events or keyboard input for about 15 minutes, which if very frustrating when you're trying to upload a mix. The problem started when I downloaded the track and stopped when I deleted it.

DJ Ness.

Maybe you downloaded a corrupted file??? You could try downloading it again and see if the problem persists.
D.J. Ness 12:35 AM - 14 August, 2009
I think you're right, I redownloaded it and haven't haven't had any problems.

I'm not familiar with Windows 7, does it have a "file preview" option or something similar? If so try turning this off.
KMadison 11:16 PM - 30 September, 2009
Yeah I just noticed the same thing yesterday in Windows 7, it was going very slow i ended up just dragging the whole folder into my itunes and let itunes and Serato deal with it.

Moving and playing individual wl.mp3 files in windows explorer folders is horribly slow i thought it was my windows machine but apparently its the file format. *shrugs*

Certain folder views in Windows Explorer will scan MP3 file tags (ID3 tags) and present certain information (artist, album, track name etc) in columns.

Whitelabel audio files store the high quality audio data in a custom ID3 tag so it could be that Windows Explorer is reading all tag information into memory when it scans the files. Given the sizable nature of the audio data this could definitely cause some sluggishness.

I would suggest changing the folder view to a simple icon based view rather than the 'details' view that some displays extended information about the files. This setting can be specified per folder so it will only affect the folder that contains your Whitelabel audio files.

Thanks Chris i'll see if this helps speed things up
DJ_SCOOBY 9:43 PM - 30 January, 2010
If you change the folder to display only name it works just fine (it doesn't scan the file at all)

Hi DJ Buddy Love.

Might be this issue: www.whitelabel.net

We're reported the problem to Microsoft but I can't tell you if or when a fix might come. The FAQ suggests some workarounds which might help.

Hi,
I am also the same issue and I am using Windows 7.

But more importantly, after I load my whitelabel downloaded tracks into Serato and try to play them, Serato tends to freeze frequently, maybe every three songs. It most commonly freezes while uploading a song onto a deck. I am using Serato SLL 2.0 with Rane TTM 57 SL. It's been very frustrating, please help!

Hi luvitdubit.

You'd best make a Help Request for your issues with Scratch Live so that the support teams from Rane and Serato can work through your problems with you.

You can create a Help Request here serato.com or here scratchlive.net.
DJdaveZ 6:37 PM - 1 June, 2010
agreed same issue with win 7. but yields an Out of Memory error.
i Posted my issue here www.serato.com
but it wasnt the same issue as the other guy after all.
DJRodrigoSM.br 4:43 PM - 4 June, 2010
Yup, been getting that same issue in 2 different 32-bits Windows 7 Professional machines. Whenever I get into a folder containing .wl files, everything gets sluggish, the green bar up top takes forever to load. Moving files from one folder to another is painful too. Switching views to something like Small Icons or such makes it better, as suggested above.
Karloff 11:33 AM - 20 March, 2011
Yikeeess! this problem came in year 2007 and until now, year 2011 its still a problem...
thank you but i will never download a whitelabel files again.

Hey Karloff,

The suggestion Chris gave earlier in this thread should help you out:
