Advice needed for small to medium sized SUBS

Dj K.Smith 7:16 PM - 8 January, 2007
I'm looking to add a little bump to my Mackie 450's and need a couple (or one really good) subs to give my system a little bass...

Pro's and cons about the subs would be cool also...

What are you guys using and if you can give me a link to a web address for more info I'd appreciate it...

Powered or NonPowered?
DJ GaFFle 7:28 PM - 8 January, 2007
I've got 2 Mackie SWA1501s to go with my 2 450's. I haven't used the full setup yet, only 1 sub and 2 Mackies. This was at a wedding and the sound was lovely. I did not have the sub at high levels and had plenty of headroom. I think the acoustics of the room and the fact of it being a wedding reception had a lot to do with it.

Big ballers (hard workers) like OG Supernatural are running those KV2 EX2.2's. They are about $1500 each but they swear by them. I think each is less than 98 lbs.

Others will swear by the Yorkville LS800's but those weigh a whopping 143 lbs. each. Way too heavy to me. You'd better have a handtruck with a ramp coming off your truck or be rollin' with Bob Sapp as your roadie.
AMF 7:37 PM - 8 January, 2007
^^^^ I've heard the mackie 450s and the swa150 combo before... oh my godness that combo was bumpin'!!! Real nice lows, and great clarity. K, if you can afford the swa150s, that is what I'd suggest. Goto the guitar center and check them out.

I looked at those swa 1501's ($979) that's a big ticket... I also looked at those Yorkville 200s subs.. ($499) more in the immediate price range...

If only we were all big ballers like OG Supernatural... lol

people are saying that one of those kv2 subs can hold its own against 2 of those 1501s.

But the price?!?!?!?!
Dj KaGeN 9:18 PM - 8 January, 2007
Macie Powered Subs
15" Size: 24"h x 18"w x 23.6"d. Wt. 105 lbs. $979
18" Size: 28.5´´h x 23.5´´w x 23.5´´d Wt. 132 lbs. $1300
Both those would eat your vehicle and you pocket book up. I'd be researching outside Mackie, and even possibly cash in the 450's and take a whole new look at a whole new system that would conserve space and give you bigger audio volumes. Or sell one 450 and get a more mobile 3 piece system.

Yorkville maybe?
Dj KaGeN 10:26 PM - 8 January, 2007
I think the Yorkville would be very scalable. Sell off 1 (so you can still have a monitor if you need it) or both the Mackies (since this Yorky stuff looks expensive, aka 'baller style') to help you cover the cost. Then you could rock it with just 2 tops full-range, then slip in the sub for bigger events, really big events - call me.
Dj K.Smith 10:37 PM - 8 January, 2007
So Dj Kagen you're feeling the yorkville nx200s?!?! I'm not gonna sell my Mackies dude.. I like 'em too much for that... I just wanna add some jiggle and wiggle to small to medium system...

I've been looking to add 1 Yorkville LS800 for large events and 1 LS200P for small gigs. I heard both and they rock. As you've notice there isn't good/inexpensive powered subs.
twinsouls 11:09 PM - 8 January, 2007
My boy has this system. He just bedroom or should I say garage DJ's but one of my EV SxA250's were getting repaired so I needed speakers.I didnt think it would make the cut but we used it for a party we did in a small venue and the sound suprised me.The bass bottom made a huge difference. For the price I think this is pretty good.

Dj KaGeN 11:34 PM - 8 January, 2007
do not be fooled... that system kicks ass especially for it's price, portability and amount of bump. Costing $800 + cables and stands, I'd dare to say you'd have cleaner sound and better room coverage than a pair of Mackies.
Dj K.Smith 12:21 AM - 9 January, 2007
Yeah but you're saying to sell my mack daddy's and get this system... I don't want to go through the hassle of ebay again to sell my "ish" to get another system... I just wanna add to what I got.. I'm not a big baller like OG Supernatural or Dj Kagen... I'm a dj on a budget... lol

I use a B-52 ACT-18X. This sub hits hard. It has a digital amplifier in it. It you needed 2 subs you could buy the ACT-18XS, which is the slave to the ACT-18X. The ACT-18X powers the ACT-18XS.Here is a link to it:

Also, here is a pretty good review of the sub:

Dj K.Smith 4:07 AM - 9 January, 2007
I like that ontime... Would you happen to have a price for the 2?
Did you have to buy them separate?
ontime1269 4:30 AM - 9 January, 2007
Actually, I only have the ACT-18X. I haven't had a gig yet to where I would need anything more. I do plan on buying the slave anyway, one of these days. I paid $785 for the ACT-18X at Guitar Center. I could be wrong but I don't think that GC carries them anymore. I'm sure that they could probably order them. I think the ACT-18XS can be bought for $399. I think you would be very satisfied with these subs. I would urge you to demo them somewhere if you could though. I highly doubt that you would be disappointed if you bought these blindly though. If you are definitely interested I could direct you to a couple of stores that would give you a good deal on them. I don't know what part of the country you are in, but the shipping could be expensive. Let me know.

What about Cerwin Vega Earthquakes. the bass in them things make your chest hurt LOL cerwinvega.com and this is a link to some prices froogle.google.com
Dj KaGeN 5:17 PM - 9 January, 2007
I think that B 52 is an excellent choice. from the mixer Master Out to the sub, and it will do the high pass cut for BOTH the L/R. you'd have yourself a very solid solution. Even the size and weight aren't that bad considering.

# Dimensions (D x W x H ): 23.5 x 32.5 x 22
# Weight: 115 lbs
Dj K.Smith 5:47 PM - 9 January, 2007
Ok I just bought this Dj Kagen
www.musiciansbuy.com

That was a nice price. I'll probably get another one in a couple of months or so unless anyone wants to adopt me and hook a brother up...
Rob - Low 11:40 PM - 9 January, 2007
Dj K.Smith how much was it? but isnt that like a 10" 200 watt sub, are you gonna be satisfied with that. i dont think i would
Dj K.Smith 11:45 PM - 9 January, 2007
$419
Dj K.Smith 11:46 PM - 9 January, 2007
2 of em should be enough Rob - Low... Remember its only small to medium sized events and the ability to fit in my truck dude...
Rob - Low 11:51 PM - 9 January, 2007
Oh ok, doesnt sound to bad then. yorkville's are good though with a great warranty. Now its time to let that bass go, what amp are you gonna yse to push them
Dj KaGeN 11:54 PM - 9 January, 2007
The NX200S is an ultra-compact powered subwoofer that features a single 10" speaker and a built in 200 watt power module. The precisely tuned band-pass enclosure of the NX200S provides rock-solid low frequency output previously available only from much larger cabinets. In fact, the unique combination of high-excursion woofers, electronic control and proprietary, series-loaded box design results in higher acoustic output than many single 18" enclosures which are 30-50% larger!
Dj KaGeN 11:55 PM - 9 January, 2007
I still have not found a pic of the connections on the back... I sure hope they are similar to the B52 setup.

yeah, i forgot about that. dont get alot of time to post. i have been gathering materials, tools and polishing off my design for a year now. i will actually begin construction this week. bill has builds that are not all that complicated and the specs meet or beat ANY commercially built speakers at a fraction of the cost. i will definately post some pix.
