good if you are looking into getting illegal music: someone has already cracked the drm on the "rental" songs so you can get as many as you want during a 1 month subscription.
in the words of a notorious flash animation: "napster bad!"
now i am off to find a $100 metallica cock ring.

funny how in a metalica interview they said that when they were NOBODIES that they were glad people would copy their tapes.
Now that they are big time they have issues?
I'm not against artist getting paid..just that they need to keep it real.

I dont see whats unreal, that now they have a market value, they try to make sure their income is not going down. If you are not well known, people wont pay anything for you, thats why they were happy people used to copy their tapes.

And recording your own music for use with SSL is a good way to learn to know your music properly :-)
it´s not at all illegal...
when you buy a vinyl / cd / mp3 (i.e. apple music store) you have a "licence" for these tracks. when you will download the tracks you´ve bought from edonkey or sumthin like that, THAN ITS NOT ILLEGAL. cuz you got that licence AND you dont break any copyprotection...
in my case it would be very handy, cuz i got a ibook g4 with no line-in (or any other option to record stuff)
so i´ve to buy sum hardware to be able to record stuff :-(

The one that makes tracks publicly available does something illegal. If you download such a track your are using 'stolen goods' in a way. Also most filesharing programs make you share what you have downloaded, in this way you also publish the tracks which is also illegal.
When you buy a CD/vinyl etc. you only have a licence to play it, nothing more.

thats for shure, uploading stuff is illegal, but not 2 download in da case that you´ve got the cd / vinyl / drm-mp3. the licence isnt just for playing, you are allowed to _have_ that song / album / whatever.
btw, apple drm sucks. the i decided to buy ssl, i thought "yes, no more vinyl buying, just check out da itunes music store and buy that stuff (yes, i know, thats not da "oldskool" of diggin´ and buying, but more handy anyway :-))
but the shitty drm doesnt allow to be played with ssl :-(
(i know how to remove the drm, but this would be illegal, too)

Sorry, your mistaken. You don't have the track (that is the copyright holder), your just allowed to play it for private use. If you play it in public (like in a club) you need to pay for playing the music comercially to people. Mostly club owners pay a lump sum each year to deal with this.

Youre from Germany, any you are _wrong_. In Germany youre not allowed to download any files which are "obviously" from an illegal source (no matter if you own a CD which you bought with the same song(s)), which is the case if you download stuff from any p2p board. It really sucks, but thats the way it is, esp. considering the fact, that you are not allowed to break any copyprotection, so the only way would be to record your CDs the analog way. Yeah, it sucks.
Correct. In Germany, this fee is covered by GEMA, and every club is supposed to pay those fees to GEMA. BTW, AFAIK if you play with burnt CDs you have to pay more GEMA fees, but I am not 100% sure on that one,

So, nik, you don't have to pay anything as a DJ? Just the club?
nik39
8:34 PM - 24 February, 2005
Rev, if I buy a record a part of the sales goes directly to GEMA. Now if I play that record in a club, I would have to pay another fee to the GEMA, but this is usually done by the club. In general, if you have a DJ contract, I assume it is written in that contract who is responsible for what.
BTW, this is how it is (not like the game ;) ) in Germany, I dont know how this is handled in other countries.

Oh ok. Thanks. I think you have to pay like 5 % of your income over here directly, but I'm not quite sure. Gotta look it up.

My apologies. What I meant by keeping it real for them was when they said they never would want anyone to copy their music and they will go to all ends of the earth to prosecute over it. Well never sounds like it started after they got big. Would have set better with me if they had said " when we were small it was ok and now it not because were big." No biggie though.. just hit a sour note with me. I pay ASCAP/BMI fees and have been for more than a decade. I just wish more of it went to the artist.
