Recording a Mix on a MacBook (not pro) running Serato!!? quality of the Line-Ins?

Hi folks, i just ordered a macbook (not pro),1gb Ram and i have a few questions..
would be nice if another macbook user could find the time to answer some!
1. It must be possible to record a mix on the same macbook running serato isn't it? Is there much latency?
Which programmes do you use for recording your mixes providing you do that on the same macbook with serato running?
1. How is the quality of the line-ins?
I have a TTM56 and would be happy if i don't have to buy another audio interface to connect it to my macbook..
The quality of my old powerbook's line-ins weren't that good and i desperately hope these are better.
This needn't be perfect quality, but it should be good enough not to cut out the bass of my mix and stuff and good enough to put it on CD and sell it without havin people complaining about the sound..
any experiences with the line-ins?
Thanks in advance :P

I think you'll be fine as far as the quality goes. Here is a free program called Audacity that allows you to record "Line in" while using SSL
audacity.sourceforge.net

The quality will definitely be fine. I've done this a couple of times and it came out just fine. I only have the stock 512mb of RAM in my Macbook.

I do this with ALL MY GIGS!!!! I record my sets every weekend and I never had a problem. I do it on a 13" White MacBook (2Ghz) with 1.25 GB of RAM.
The way I do it is like this.
1.- I use a iCable by MONSTER. This is basically a 7-Foot y-Cable. This hooks up directly from my REC OUT in the mixer into the LINE IN on the MacBook.
monstercables.com
2.- I use AUDIO HIJACK PRO ($29) to record the mix. Why? Because it's saving as it's recording, and it saves it as MP3 (small files) rather than AIFF (huge files - 700MB per hour of recording). What does this mean? It means that if your computer crashes while recording, your recording will be saved up to the crash. Other programs won't do this. You will have to do your recording than save it. And if your Mac crashes during the save, your recording will be lost. THAT IS HUGE for me!
3.- On the Mac OsX SOUND PREFERENCES, I set the input level all the way down. Why? For some reason, my Mac's input level is really sensative. If I leave it normal, my recording will be distorted.
Hope this helps. If you have any questions, just ask.

Yes Nik, you are correct. :( And that sucks, but it works. I didn't need to do that on my old Macs.

Thanks
Woody these icables look good, will check them out!
And brichi respect for all your work solving the dropout issue..stumbled across this today and you really keep it up in this case..booka!
i googled up and down but also couldn't find a terminal command line for disabling the sleep mode of the keyboard/trackpad.
Though i really think this MUST be possible via terminal.
Why don't you ask the dudes at apple to find out the correct command line?

Thanks George,,,,I asked them at Apple but they don't listen, they just keep having me run pointless tests to send to them and say it's the SSL box but we all know it's not. I'm still bugging them though, I'm not done. More to come......

That's apple, reminds me of the first gen macbook that shut itself up randomly, they really took their time before giving a statement but what you are experiencing is just plain silly.
i guess they try to work that out and just keep quiet till they resolve it..
or they simply just don't care..for now
When i get my book i'll definitely use my free hotline-support time to bother em!

Thanx for the recording tips....this is the setup i was prepared to use. Do you think you could use Nicecast at the same time as well. I have a 2.0 Macbbok Pro w/ maxed out RAM

i have a macbook pro... i simply record with garage band and the sound quality is fine. just run a stereo cabe from your aux out on your mixer to the line in on ur comp, change your preferences and your good to go. garage band comes with ur mac so no money is neccesary ecept the cable.
