DYI Projection screen results & Info

Joshua Carl 6:20 PM - 6 June, 2010
so, after reading and sitting on the idea for a while I shot out to jo ann fabrics
to check out the materials.
while the fabric mentioned was a spandex/ lycra blend
they said they only had a Poly/spandex blend.

the sheets come in an endless length, but the width it limited to 5 feet.
I opted for 5ftx7ft ($23.00)
keep in mind one edge of the screen is rough from the machines.
they suggested a BALL TIP needle for sewing the edges back ($3.00)

Then it was Off to home depot.
knowing Im not going to be using a truss for these right away
(these are to augment some of the clubs I do that dont have impressive video systems, as you'll see...)
I grabbed 6 rubber grip spring clamps. (6 x $2.00)
www.robins-beads.co.uk
I also picked up 6 48" Bungee cords ($8.00)
and 6 24" bungee cords ($7.00)

I should have also bought from eye screws
hardware.hardwarestore.com
this was a LESSON LEARNED.

So, using the random surfaces above my booth was able to McGruber it together.
it was NOT ideal this week, becuase I was not tethering the screen to ideal
locations (enter the eye screws)
once I tether it on the bottom, and the right and left Ill lose those wrinkles
Im aslo looking into those other clamps.
the clamps from home depot WORKED GREAT, the did NOT budge all night!
and I had a fair amount of tension on them.

I was using only a 2400 lumen projector and it was throwing about 20 feet.
(in the market for a 4-5000)

heres a pic.
Next week I was going to do a proper DYI video for people.
(keep in mind the pic in the video is widescreen)
sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net
and a crappy quality video:

Hope this helps out anyone trying to go the same route.
and if anyone has some helpful info that I might have overlooked.

hehehe... I mean DIY.

Hey JC. Are these permanent installs? Or are you going to be moving them to different locations from time to time.
Joshua Carl 9:54 PM - 7 June, 2010
certainly not permanent.
Im only in this room 1 or 2 saturdays a month...
and while the room is doing well, it has your typical crunch on any spending.
I was able to convince them to buy a 4500 lumen projector (thats the one you see on the wall in the video) and am working on screen paint or something with them.

so, this is more me just trying to make the best out of situation on short money.
I bought the clips from stretchy screens, and I will we installing anchor points for them
this week.

Only reason why i ask is i didnt really like how my screens looked stretched out with no border. What i did was bought some wall moulding from lowes/home depot and made a frame for it. Just make sure you get a thicker moulding so it doesnt bend. it looks100% better! I made one for my house and i am going to make some smaller ones for my mobile gigs.

Dont know that this interests you since this is not a permanent install and carrying a 7ft screen around but certainly bring this up to the owners and charge them to make them. It is really easy to do.
Joshua Carl 12:53 AM - 8 June, 2010
Funny you mention that, because I was considering how to make it presentable
to bring to a room that I cant access harness points.
and while sometimes the strected starburst looks cool:
lib.store.yahoo.net

I like the idea of the black border as well.
and heres what I came up with.

buying a 7x2 foot BLACK spandex fabric.
folding it in 1/2 and sewing it so it acts like a winter hat.
Ill slide this over the top of the truss to make the top black border and cover the truss.
another 7x2 black spandex lenth will go around the bottom to make the bottom border.

for the left and right, a pair of 7x3 black spandex sewn on end
this can go (where its sewn, like a pocket) over the top right and left corners of the
truss and be pulled down to make the right and left borders.

its a whole lot of bungee... but in my mind it looks good :)
and it could be totally adjustable
and wouldnt cost more than 25.00

ya i guess you could do that too.

here is the one i made for my house. Sorry for the big ass 40 in the pic but you get the idea.

Yesterday I did like Joshua and got a 10 x 5 piece of poly/spandex at Joanns fabrics.

2 packs of these tarp clips at Orchard Supply
www.amazon.com

and some small 10" bungee cords. It seemed impossible to find plain black bungees so I sat there with my son coloring them with black sharpie pens.

when I tried clipping it on my old american dj truss, I discovered that 10ft was too wide so I cut 1ft off the width with scissors. Man that stuff is hard to cut. Make sure your scissors are super sharp.

Both front and read projection look fine with my nFocus xs1 projector. I connected it to my Roku Netflix box and the kids watched the first season of SpongBob all night.

Good times.

want to also say that it doesn't appear that the edges will fray if not sewn.
Joshua Carl 7:07 PM - 14 June, 2010
Im on the fence about the clips now.

the rubber clamps from home depot work great, but look very rag-tag.
I got my clips from stretchy screens and they are a bed of about 20 little teeth
that bite into to fabric.
of course this means I can rest easier when REALLY pulling on the screen.
but it also means tiny tears....which eventually, we know where that will end up

Tomorrow I'm going to do an all inclusive video

i had my mom that is a decent seamstress make me a couple, she actually even put a wide seamed edge like you see on the professional ones. I would have to say mine is a tru DIY, even with the framing. But you would still swear that it was all purchased for this exact reason of use. Need to grab some pics and vid and up em for you guys. I am truly proud of them. They are even adjustable, and she even sewn tabs on the backside at each halfway point to attach make the starburst shapes. Any more ?'s, pm me.
