Where did this come from Shadow??? And you're also talkin' about the player hater capital of the known universe too... In all honesty, I've come across more cool people than I have haters.

Yeah, but at the same time the music business is highly competitive and there's not too many places to play. So, nobody wants to risk giving gigs and possible money.

Are you guys talking about Techno, Hip Hop or in general? Detroit the birthplace of techno but from what i've read it's not so supported as much now..... btw i'm from Australia and dig the Detroit style, you guys were so innovative, but it seems that Europe has taken your music and made it there own

ha ha!
im just trying to be positive and support everyone!
(((ekwipt im taliking about every genre)))
techno, house and original dance music the most!
all detroit is about is hip hop now a day's.
which is sad because like you said we are the birthplace of techno and dance music!
you cant even play ghetto tech here anymore for longer then 5 minute's without someone wanting to here walk it out or stuntin like my daddy!
let's just keep supporting each other because we have to much love and desire toward this whole culture to keep letting negative thing's happen!

Well, the state of techno is alive and (sort of) well in Detroit.
Here's the deal, Saunderson, May, and Atkins had their day back in the early 90's. They are labeled the "Belleville 3" and all that jazz.
However, what those guys failed to do after they got their own individual success is not support their city. There was a long time where Derrick May refused to play in Detroit along with Jeff Mills for whatever reason. Derrick May hasn't made any music in YEARS, something like 15 years or so, yet thinks he owns the city.
Another thing that is up with the Detroit Techno cats is that they never tried to develope new talent and put them on their labels. They just basically stuck to releasing their boys shit on their label rather than seek out new, young, enthusiastic cats.
I mean, look at what Hawtin is doing now. He got HUGE and now you are starting to see new blood all the time on his M_nus label and it's doing quite well. However, the old school cats do none of that. The only guy that does is Carl Craig, but he's on a whole nother level, if you ask me.
All that aside, there's still a TON of good DJ's in Detroit and some good producers. There's labels like Berretta and Berretta Gray as well as Ferris Park, Deep Transportation, and D records. You also have to remember that Detroit really put Ghetto Tech on the map, even though you can trace that back to the Miami Bass scene. However, Godfather and Co. blew the shit up to new levels, really.
As far as the current crop of local Detroit DJ's, they are very talented and I would put most of the good locals up against ANY of the headliners that breeze into town. Seriously. The DJ's here keep on top of things pretty well and know how to play records, albeit to small crowds, but that's no fault of theirs.
Also, a lot of the Detroit talent has been moving to the minimal techno "Mecca" of Berlin, too. Germany is the new black when it comes to minimal techno and all that jazz. It is the hot spot right now, much like Detroit was, and I'm sure later on down the road another city/country will be the centerpiece of some other kind of music.
Oh, and I forgot to add that the house scene in Detroit is decent, too. We've got guys like Theo Parrish and Kenny Dixon Jr. pumping out records and are very popular at home and worldwide. We also have some very good house DJ's in this city, too.

Yeah the detroit techno music is about done. .
Woah, I didn't say it's done. There's actually a bunch of good producers and DJ's right now, but they're not getting the shine that the old school cats have gotten. Plus, we're starting to export our locals to other cities. In fact, Derek Plaslaiko was just voted "best party DJ" by Village Magazine, or whatever, in New York. We've also got a couple more cats out there now.
Also, we have guys around here that have been going to make their pilgrimmage to the techno "Mecca" of Berlin and getting gigs out there and what not.
So, it's not dead, it's just not what it used to be.

everytime i dj i like to play house, trance, break's,and old school freestyle!
but everytime i do majority of the people dont want to hear it because they want all rap!
i normally take request all the time (as long as it fit's in my set) but im not taking request for rap anymore (im done!)
the detroit scene has changed over the last few year's with music.you cant go to a club without hearing (garbage rap)
trust me i am hip hop but all this new rap is terrible---well more then half of it! and all the new generation thank's it's good (chicken noodle soup, stuntin like my daddy,) what the hell is that?
trust me i do play hip hop but it's a classic or a hit!
i will not play a song that is not a hit unless i know it's gonna be a hit and have that feeling that it's gonna be a classic!
i feel for me to be a better dj im gonna stop taking request at all so i can be more diverse.

Red Square is a pretty good club. I've spinned there a few times and they've always been good turn outs. But I've also just went up there to go party and it's been a few dead nights too. It's a hit or miss at that club for sure.
Bookz, do u know Dj Needlez? I know he has a Windsor radio show. I've listened to it a few times and I thought it was pretty good.

Can one of you Detroit cats tell me what "minimal" house or techno means vs regular house? There are like 1,000 different sub-genres within house/dance. Sh*t is confusing as hell. Someone asked me for some once I was like, "I have no idea what you're talkin about"... and please no BS wikipedia links.

A raw and stripped down version... minimal techno has it's roots in early to mid 90's Detroit with Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, and Rich Hawtin - the sound has since migrated over to Germany and saw a spike in popularity from 2002 on.
...and you are right, too many meaningless names attatched to the music.
