for all of you running windows...
so per the advice of lots of folks (on here and elsewhere), i have automatic updates turned off for windows xp on my dedicated serato notebook (no internet on this baby). because of this, windows has an annoying icon in my taskbar that won't go away. it also makes a balloon every time i restart my computer that tells me that i have updates turned off.
does anyone know how to get rid of this icon??
thanks!

Click Start , click Run , type regedit , and then press ENTER. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced Right-click the right pane, create a new DWORD value, and then name it EnableBalloonTips . Double-click this new entry, and then give it a hexadecimal value of 0 . Quit Registry Editor. Log off Windows, and then log back on.

Or just go Start -> Control Panel -> Security Center and then click on "Change the Way Security Center Alerts Me" in the box on the left. Uncheck automatic updates. This is for SP2, I don't remember if this works in SP1.

open your security center (over your control panel or by clicking on that icon), at the resources window on the left side click on "Change the way Security Center alerts me", uncheck the 2nd checkbox ("Automatic Updates Alert me if my computer might...")

Updates can mess with some programs that aren't ready for said update. So when it changes the settings on your puter it can fuck with how your programs run.

and yes, the reason i have the updates turned off is what shamann said above...

if you go on the internet at all with that machine i wouldnt recommend forgetting about the updates. Turning off the balloon is no big deal but the updates are absolutely necessary for the machine unless the machine never touches the internet.
