I hope I'm not the first to suggest this (new to the forum) but though I love my SSL I can't play files encoded as MP4s! Not AAC but Mp4 files that I have in spades and would like to throw down. The quality is excellent and the tags are useful, so why is Rane so late to the table with this one?

do you mean m4p- acc is m4a
m4p are protected files from iTunes music store and i only know of one program other then iTunes that will play it (and it still has to use iTunes to do it)
MP4 is actualy a video format from what i remeber (or part of a video format.. the audio track inside of a video format) but i could be wrong on that one

no m4a is the same thing as ACC format... mp4 is video format
now i think mp4 video has embeded m4a as its encoded audio...(m4a would stand for MPEG4 (mp4) Audio )

actually the file extension doesn't mean a whole lot... mp4 could have mpeg4 video (or xvid for that matter) but contain mp3 or ac3 audio sound. It's just a "container" format, much like .avi and .mov file extensions. but most of the time, in the wild you'll see mp4 usually containing video where m4a is Apple's format for just audio.
Disturbed has it mostly correct: iTunes rips to the AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) format... and it uses the m4a extension.

There is shareware that can covert seamlessly mp4p (iTunes Files) to mp3 format. The trial versions typically only convert 50% of a file and the full versions will convert the entire file. The costs is anywhere between $29 (USD) and $49 (USD). The conversion is completely legal, and Apple probably get's a cut of any of the software sold. My only caution is to try all the trial versions first before you find the version you like. Also, this will cut the pain out of burning to CD then re-ripping...which is now unnecessary to do.
