Storage Shelves for Vinyl

I'm trying to figure out the cheapest and most convenient way of storing my records. Currently I have them in a bunch of crates but I don't have much floor space in my apartment so I want to put the records into some sort of sturdy and cheap shelving unit. Does anybody have any suggestions for something cheap and convenient? I was thinking maybe checking out Ikea's shelving structures to see if any of them would work. All suggestions are welcome.

Hm, if someone of you has any idea how to built one by yourself (I need one 3m high and about 3.5m long, got between 6500 and 7000 records, and they need a good place now that I have moved), please tell me how. Ikea is not good (and not cheap) at that sizes.

LOL. I said to that bot lady that I hated IKEA and she said "How is IKEA different from other furnishing stores? We offer a wide range, good design and function, and also low prices. That's our business idea." Funny...

nik that is a long unit ..if you would build it yourself I would use at least 1/2" thick plywood....I built 13"x13" cubes using 1/4" plywood and they worked out nice but now I have to build a lot more and I could use a unit you are requesting just as bad... the problem is i would have to split it into to units just in case I would have to move it...what do you want to know about how to make it by yourself other than needing wood, measuring tape, hammer, sand paper, and a lot of patience...don't forget to add some wheels also.

Alex, well, what do I need to have to take care about? What kind of wood is the cheapest (but still stable enough)? Why do you want to add wheels, wouldnt that make it less stable? I cant imagin a records shelve 3m high that stands stable on wheels, or did I misunderstand you?
If anyone knows a place where to get those kind of shelves cheap, would be great.

Check this out. I bought 2 of these and used extra pieces from the 2nd one to prevent my wax falling out of the back or sides. I got mine for $25 a piece at my local hardware store. These are almost exactly the same but a little pricier. Very sturdy and collapsable in the event you have to move.

Nik I think plywood is the best for the price and stability but you could also go with what the call MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) which is good also but I have seen it warp...and records get heavy.
I would add wheels just incase i wanted to move the unit around my place....there is no way you are gonna slide 6500 records easily.....some nice wheels would do the unit justice...placing the wheels in the right areas wouldn't hurt the stability.
As for getting shelves pre-made I have found nothing cheaper then Ikea...if any one does please post since I am interested as well....

I'm thinking about going with something like this. It's customizable and you can get them up to 89" high! Plus there's a lot of holes in the cornerpieces so it's easy to make them the right height for vinyl. I just hope it can support the weight of my records.

Damn, that tall? How will you reach the top shelf (unless you were a center on your college basketball team)? You could stack them but I don't know what kind of impact that would have on their stability. It's probably not recommended.

What's wrong with pine? It doesn't matter if it's finished or treated does it? I'm just worried that it's not going to be strong enough to hold my vinyl. My problem is that I'm limited in terms of size. I don't have much space in my apartment and if I get one of the long ones and a short one, then it'll be about 54" or so which is manageable. You're just talking about your own preferences when it comes to the finishing right? I don't see how that'll affect how well this thing works as a record holder.
The long shelves are 32" long and supports 110lbs of stuff. Does 32" of vinyl weigh more or less than 110lbs? Any ideas?

Rice---by specs it seems to work out with the pounds, but take into mind that that 110lbs 24/7 on a jointed pine plank that looks to be 3/4x11x32 seems a bit flimsy.
I'm a woodworker by day so i know a bit (brag). That shelf you posted will work, you just need to mod the shelf a bit by adding a partition under each shelf. (don't forget the bottom shelves too!:)
Some plywood from a hardware store
screws
glue
saw
drill = shelf party at your house!

The best solution for record shelves is just building (or having them) built. You have to get a sturdy type of wood and the distance of each shelf has to fairly short(roughly 3 feet).
Many of the shelving solutions out there aren't made for the weight of vinyl. The shelves may hold up for a few weeks but you'll soon find that the shelves will begin to bow.
Rice Cube, if you have a scale just weigh one of your crates. Then measure the crate and divide it's length into 32." That should give you a good idea of what you're working with.

I was curious about that IKEA table as my current setup is...ahem...a little less stable than I would like it to be. How sturdy/stable is that adjustable table in your experience?

When you put records in it gets stability. And the horizontal parts are from one piece, supported by the vertical parts so it can't break or bend down in the middle.

Re the Ikea Expedit shelving unit, I have had mine for about 4 years now. Sturdy as hell (even after I took it apart and reassembled it after moving). No sagging. I highly recommend it. It's relatively cheap--I think I bought mine for $150-200. Don't know what the current prices are. It's also a great space saver. I now use mine as a divider between my living room and the lab.

in the US this is a very affordable idea.
they make one for $99 and one that's even bigger for $149.
definately worth the price.

I started off thinking of buying.. sumtin like this place..

I ended making 3 pieces of furntire from this place. the cost was low in comparision.
I have posted pics of my main booth and and record shelf in the PICS forum. If you happen to notice a funky orage/green/blue paint that's actually a coffee table/record bin also........ don't start up on the paint scheme, the original plan was to beer cap the top and encase them in shellack (sp?) -- haven't gotten around to doing that.

i will build something similar to the link above because it's ideal for placing the laptop on the top and the sound card and all the wires below.

I saw a picture once in a home decoration mag of a bookshelf made out of about 56 identical wooden boxes stacked on top of each other. Looked very cool, and you can always re-arrange the whole thing any way you like. Plus when you have to move you just pick up the boxes, with records and all. The boxes were something like this: www.htfr.com , but made out of MDF. It's a hell of a DIY job if you need 24 or 48 boxes, but you could always pay your little cousin to do it for you.
I'm about to move house, and I'll either do the boxes, or get the Ikea Expedit, or maybe just build someting like the Expedit myself.

check, uhaul moving boxes, 12"X14" hold about 110 records. Good for storage and moving because they are light. fold the flaps back, or cut them off and place them right on the shelf. Ive still got eight year old boxes that have been across the country twice.
For shelves get 12" boards cut to whatever length you need, hold them up with grey cinder block bricks. Its a cheap solution, so when you move leave them for the next guy and get more in your new city...
