Batch Convert mpeg2 to mp4

ToddLarBoy 6:53 AM - 26 April, 2010
I've been backing up videos for years in their original mpeg2 quality for edit projects. Never a problem when burning DVDs for DVJs, but just now bought SL3 and need mp4s.

Handbrake seems to only work from VOBs and doesn't seem to do well with a batch.

I need good advice for a batch converter to go from mpeg2 to VSL mp4 format and, if possible tag along the way. All files have same naming scheme (i.e. track - artist _ title #bpm#). Of course there seem to be multiple tagging progs available for after the fact if the encoder isn't smart enough to do it for me.

Help is much appreciated - thanks

P.S. need software for PC

MPEG Streamclip will batch mpeg 2 to mp4. Not sure if you will need to buy the mpeg plugin that goes with it so I would check on that as well. If you're keeping your aspect ratio the same and won't be doing any cropping or adjustments, it's probably your best bet. I've posted individual settings on here before, but if you need em again send me a pm.

carter, I searched through forums for your other post and see multiple mentions of MPEG Streamclip but any link to individual settings isn't an active link anymore (i think tiny.url dies after a while).

Please throw them my way and thanks for the recommendation. Hit me up if you ever head out to SoCal

Marx - Was that suppossed to be a link to something?
Unless there is some new version of handbrake, it wouldn't convert from MPEG2, only from VOB. I am not about to re-rip 10 years worth of video collecting.

If there is something I'm missing though, please feel free to explain (hopefully in more than 1 word - lol) - Thanks

Mpeg2 is basically vob. If you rename your mpeg2 to vob, it will work in Handbrake. If you using Windows Tmpgenc Express works well in batch. I've had much success converting using Handbrake for personal vob files.

Its alot of extensions to rename, so I recommend using www.filerenamer.net with this you can rename a directory full of mpg's to vob at a touch of a button.

no problem on the batch rename, I have many utilities for that.

So I think we agree that Handbrake has no easy way to batch convert, correct? I've looked in forums both on the handbrake site and scratchlive and I only see scripts, but this wouldnd't be easy either considering the multitude of different source locations (oh yeah, and my lack of programming knowledge).

I'll search now for the Tmpgenc prog you mentioned. I hope it is as easy to create the output template setting that VSL recommends. Any chance there is also a VSL preset template around here somewhere that can be imported?

I really hope to figure this out before dropping another $100 on a converter program like Windows Tmpgenc Express

I just posted these a few days ago. You must have overlooked it when searching so hard for that answer. ;-)
scratchlive.net
Bottom of the page I give detailed instructions on how to use it. Buy the $20 plugin from Apple and you're set.

is the $20 plugin the same as the quicktime alternative programe the Streamclip site says you can use?

The price doesn't matter. If it works, I'll pay $100s to save the time. We're talking every PO DVD from 2000 to today. Well over 6TB spread over 6 drives. I don't mind spending cash to get this done right. As long as I don't have to re-rip all of this.
