Need your opinions on Pio's vs 57's flanger sound...please respond

Konix 8:45 PM - 19 April, 2010
Alright, so I need everyones' opinion on a matter (and please the more people that respond the better). As I'm sure a lot of people here have the TTM-57, let me ask you this, do you use the flanger FX on it? Do you like the sound of the 57's flanger? If no, why not? It's been brought up many times before, but the general consensus I've read is that many people don't like the 57's flanger and don't use it at all. The typical response I hear/read is "cause it doesn't sound anything like Pioneer's DJM-500/600/700/800 flanger." Would most agree to that?

Now, this is not a 57 vs 800 debate. This is a debate about their flangers and what people prefer*. If you don't know, the Pioneer mixers use a positive flange, the 57 uses a negative flange. What's the difference? Well, without getting into all the physics of flanging, with a positive flange, the delayed signal waveform is the same as the source, with a negative flange the delayed signal's waveform is inverted from the source. This is what gives their characteristic, yet different, sounds.

If you have no idea what either positive or negative flangers sounds like, take a listen to this...

www.supload.com

00:00-00:08 = no flange
00:08-00:32 = positive flange
00:32-01:02 = negative flange
01:02-01:32 = positive flange
01:32 = quick change to negative flange - 01:47
01:47 = quick change to positive flange - 02:14
02:15 - 02:53 =negative flange, varying depth
02:53 - end = positive flange

If you HAD to choose one, which one would you prefer? The positive sounding flanger or the negative sounding flanger? So in other words, do you like Pioneer's flanger or the 57's flanger better?

*Yes, I know the flanger effect is cheesy and very played out, but again, if you HAD to choose just one (pos or neg), which one you rather have?

I like the sound of the negative flange better... most likely because the positive flange is so very common and overused.

Well, that's what I was trying to get around. Yes Pioneer's flanger is very (ab)used and will undoubtedly bias some opinions, but assuming it wasn't played out and abused and you've never heard a flanger before, which one would you prefer? Which one do you think sounds "better," "pleasing to the ear," etc.

I always thoughts Pio's FX's sounded a lot better than the 57's. That being said I still use the flanger and phaser on my 57 a 'normal' amount.

+1
I like them both to be honest but prefer the negative sonically and for the fact it is different and not overused. I don't think just becase people are used to hearing the Pioneer flager that that makes it good or a good thing.

I dont really use EFX much but i just listened to the differences and i like the Positive Flange better.

Taking away the fact that its overused. The positive flange creates a nice airy fluffy effect to the sound that swirls around and tails off with a nice bit of white noise..

The negative flange creates a more robotic depressed sound. Almost as if its taking away from the sound not adding to it.

To me the positive flange sounds exactly like what its named, its a more positive fun sounding effect.

I like Pioneer's better. It has a fuller sound to it. I miss my EFX-500.

Pio mixers and effects units have become the "EXPECTED" sound of the industry, I'm hating to fully admit that I'm OK with the emulation of them. I'm not a big fan of effects overall, but yet, if I add them to my mix, I want them to sound like the next guy. That being said, the last thing i want is to "SOUND OFF" in front of crowd - especially while effecting/button pressing for crowd affections. In my opinion, (effects or scratches are the same thing) meaning they are additions to the overall tunes selected. If you're not at the same level as your peers, you sound off, thus you are deemed "LESSER". [sad but true]

I think negative flange sounds robotic and cold and I don“t use it at all.
The positive flange sounds warm and I sometimes use it before breaks etc. on the 800.
WarpNote 10:13 AM - 20 April, 2010
The positive flange builds energy on the floor, that's why its so popular and played out...
I still prefer positive flanger over negative flanger.

+1 for positive flanger
