I mean, things are up and down when it comes to playing out at clubs on weekends etc..
Sometimes they go well and im excited, then other time they really dont go well for many reasons and i dont enjoy playing out and it feels like a chore i chose to take part of.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Does anyone care if they play out and why?
i mean i love playing out and getting promotion and all that and the loud system etc.... but sometimes I wonder why I strive to do it so much and its not paying any bills to be honest. This club DJ thing isnt paying anythig that makes an impact to my end of month bills.
If you quit playing out, tell me why, if you cant stop and love it tell me why?
Thanks peeps!!

Yeah we do it for the love of it, but I still need a way to pay for my record pools and such.
If i didn't play out I probably wouldn't need to be in all the pay for record pools and just get the free ones, or really cheap ones.

me personally YES, i do really care if i play out its def one of the highest priorities in my life and the money does help me alot since its all extra money on top of my day job money, but i do get what your saying, the spot i just started at has lots of different kinds of crowds and some of them are people i dont really care to play for, i really dont have alot of joy for makin old folks dance to really old music or playin lenard skynard cause some group of rednecks is there that night and dont like that "other" music, but overall the good nights make up for the bad 10 fold

As I get older I realize that I'm not so pressed to play out at clubs. If I get the gig, cool if not, still cool with me. There's always mobiles, the internet, and production work to be done. I'm always gonna be a DJ, I'm just not always gonna be a club DJ.
In fact, I'm about to pass on a good gig right now because it just doesn't fit my schedule and I know there is another DJ trying to get on.

Another factor for me caring about playing out at clubs anymore is the steady decline in club pay that I've been seeing. I have club owners and promoters talking about paying 100 a night and that just ain't worth it. If it was $100 to come out and play a 2 hour set at a club that I would be at any way then maybe. But not for 4+ hours at a club that I don't really patronize.

If you're even asking this question you should not be doing it. Quit. Your lack of inspiration is going to carry over the dancefloor.

Logisticalstyles, i like your answers. how old are you?
Bezzle, in light of your new spot (and lack of gigs in the past (no disrespect)), i know you are all over that. So you are an exception here. i can understand your position and i would be the same.

i wouldnt consider myself an exception for those reasons, ive had repeat gigs and spots in the past and i was just as eager then, when i dont have a spot i want to be up there 10 times as much but more than anything my need for attention will always fuel my need to play out, especially in the dj game because i really wanna make it to the top and i feel the need to constantly prove myself, im cursed that im stuck in a shitty demographic with kinda shitty crowds but on the flip side of that coin im also in a place where there are no real outstandingly awsome DJs so its not against reason that i could achieve alot, so that drives me.............i dont think anyone on this forum whos posted for over a week can argue that i dont crave attention lol

i spun for the same club 5 nights a week, 8hrs a night for over 6 years in two different cities from 86-92 and they only paid me $100 a night the whole time, not so much as a thank you and always acted like i was overpaid and started to bug me to go a lil more commercial when the one and only stipulation of our agreement was never, ever tell me what to play - the money put a roof over my head smoke in my lungs and vinyl on my decks, i just wanted to practice my art and always packed floor. Literally put them on the map in both towns, and the first club financed the second which they took me up to spin at. And that's one of the better experiences. it seems to be the nature of club owners. Only cool club owners i ever spun for were Steven and Keith at Candide in Atlanta, they *insisted* i not pander to the crowd and to express myself, and had actually sought me out when they heard i left the Masquerade (the club in question), and paid me double without me even asking. They got me and appreciated me, but that's rare rare rare. Most are philistines and just want to exploit you and want least-common-denominator music, even in big cities.
So i've come to the conclusion that throwing your own events is the only way to go to both preserve your integrity, remain the master of your own destiny and get paid what you're worth. Once i was exposed to the San Francisco party scene and how they do things there the proverbial scales fell from my eyes. Here in florida that DIY scene isn't booming, but you stay true and make the scene wherever you are. Lately i've been doing lil afterhours gigs at my friend's house who's kind of a social butterfly and digs my sound.
Throughout the years, when i moved to a new town (usually as a result of clicking with some promoter) i'd deliver pizza to make ends meet til i caught on, and if people asked me why i gleefully said, "so i don't have to take requests!!".
Stay humble, stay true me droogies!

step your game down?
I hate the club scene here in chicago, and i won't cater to the requests of people at bars. I play lounges or "rooms" every now and then. but i go after hip hop shows backing artists. i can play absolutely anything i want, and i get to mingle with up and coming chicago artists.
so no i dont care about not gettin gigs, i pick and choose the ones i want. i make enough money during the week to be picky about what gigs i take.
