Serato Video General Discussion

Talk about Serato Video and Video-SL.

Newbie question...password on your externals?

Rebelguy 9:40 PM - 16 March, 2010
Anyone running passwords on their external video drives? I have never done this but am thinking about it given the value of collections and the sticky fingers that seem to be frequenting events nowadays. Can a password be added to an existing drive?

This is all on the Mac side.
djpuma_gemini 10:03 PM - 16 March, 2010
I think Phat-Al does

I know with macs you can create a sparse image and password protect it and drop stuff inside of it.
I do it for backing up time machine over the network to a Nas.

You probably have to mount the image everytime you go to a gig and it will prompt you for the password.

I'll have to test this out on a little external with a few hundred videos and see how it goes.

This won't password protect the entire drive, but it will definitley protect the videos inside the sparse image

Yes I have been doing this for YEARS!! I use an open source program that works on both MAC & PC. It is called truecrypt...

works great!!!

I run all my videos in several Truecrypt volumes.

Never had a single issue.

Thanks for googling that for us Phat-Al.

How does it work with the scratchlive folder. Are you encrypting the entire drive or just the folders that the videos are in?
sixxx 11:22 PM - 16 March, 2010
The new Western Digital drives come with a password protection feature already.
DJ-Phat-AL 11:27 PM - 16 March, 2010
I encrypt the entire drive and just mount it on my Mac and when I need to add stuff I mount it on my PC workstation... I love that it is cross-platform friendly!
sixxx 11:43 PM - 16 March, 2010
Can you encrypt the drive AFTER it already has data on it? Or, do you have to delete the drive?
djpuma_gemini 11:56 PM - 16 March, 2010
I tested it out, but only was able to create an encrypted file within my flash drive. It says you can do the entire drive, bu recommends that for experienced users.

This is pretty much the same as the sparse image through disk utility, but it's cross platform accessible with truecrypt and a much stronger key.

Al, do you have the drive encrypted as Mac Extended or something else.
djpuma_gemini 11:57 PM - 16 March, 2010
What happens if you play out with another dj and you plug into his laptop, does he need the truecrypt software installed (that would suck)

It has to be formatted with TrueCrypt.. so yeah.. must be an empty drive first.

I did mine as a fat32 so I can mount it on both PC & Mac with ease. I have had NO ISSUES whatsoever with speed or anything else using it on my MacBook Pro via firewire800.

Yeah TrueCrypt needs to be installed the users computer. But you can just have it on a thumb drive and install it. It takes seconds to do.

I started using this when I first moved to Vegas to help protect the club's computers from theft of videos. It was my videos I put on 4 computers in the 4 rooms doing video. Ironically it protected me from the club owners. They tried to gank my shit!! It all worked out.... they didn't get it.

Funny story to add to this. They would see me setting up the computers and see me typing out this long drawn out password to mount the drives and they would joke (but sure they were serious) and ask what the password was... my reply "you will never guess the password for this" ... which was actually the password. It was a sentence without the spaces in between the words. But I added to the end of the password " ... you will never guess the password you dumb mother fuckers...:

:-)

I remember you mentioning that password story before. still funny as hell

I might try this on a backup drive and make it mac extended. I don't or rarely mount it to the pc anymore.

Thanks

Hey Phat Al, were you able to get rid of that annoying "initialize" screen that pops up when you plug in the hard drive on mac osx? I was able to get rid of it on windows, but cant figure it out for mac.
DJ-Phat-AL 5:06 AM - 29 October, 2010
it doesn't bother me... it is just a Mac's way of saying it thinks the drive is blank. Which is fine if someone steals it... let them think that. PC's behave differently because it doesn't tell you automatically if something needs to be formatted to use.

Gotcha, was just curious if you figured out a way to stop it.

Does any of this affect/interfere with the ability to do backups?

Just wondering if any of you using encryption have run across issues with that...
DJ-Phat-AL 1:01 PM - 29 October, 2010
backup what exactly?
I have two identical hard drives that are encrypted that I take with me everywhere. One is a backup of the other. But I have those externals synced to a master copy of my mobile library on a my main home workstation computer.

So... that is my primary use for those drives. If you are talking about using an encrypted drive a backup drive for you computer... I am sure it works fine.
DJCheLu 4:48 PM - 29 October, 2010
So if you wanted to just do a time machine backup of the encrypted drive would you just mount it and enter the password and time machine should have no issues?

I couldnt do a long sentence password, i suck at typing lol i would be there for hours trying to get it right while doing it fast enough so people cant pick it up.

Does anyone use a laptop lock while gigging? I use to use one all the time and wrap the cable aruond the chair leg or something

As in, using software like SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner to do full-disk (or full-partition) backups. Wasn't sure if using encryption would interfere with that kind of software.

DAYYUMM!! where's your residency? compton? lol i dont worry about that cause my laptop is always with me,only when i go to the bathroom but the music is playing,if someone tries to steal it the music will stop and i'll have 200 witnesses lol
DJCheLu 6:04 PM - 2 November, 2010
^^LOL no but i setup and it just sits there until the band takes a break and is finished for the night. So its not playing music. It used to be on stage so i had it locked up. Bands hate djs so i never trusted them hahha.

Im put into a new spot where I am always close to my setup but i still get weary of fast hands so i might start locking it up again. 2k laptop is just too much to lose in one night.
DJCheLu 6:07 PM - 2 November, 2010
Oh to add to that story, once i drank too much and forgot how to take the the lock off so i ended up taking the whole table home with me and the laptop........ Security was laughing at me

anyone using the built in encrypt drive (right click) via finder in mountain lion and mavericks, with SSL?

Are you having any drop out issues, or file loading issues? I was thinking of encrypting my backup external that I keep in my bag, but I don't want to have serato issues…

This is using the built in encrypt drive function on mountain lion / mavericks on the mac's finder.
