Its really engaging the expanded window that puts the video card to the test though
in alot of cases...

but shit...if it works...thats pretty kickass.
Millz 4:31 AM 11 March 2010

Would also be useful to know: at what settings (screen size, quality, frame-blending, etc.)?

Details are key to actually providing useful information.
Joee 12:55 PM 11 March 2010
will get that info next time at his house & post
dvdj havoc 10:41 PM 11 March 2010

*ahem!* this thread is a complete waste of time without details:

1) what quality setting in Video-SL?

2) what resolution is used for the external screen (assuming that setup even works with an external screen)?

3) Frame-blending on or off?

4) V-Sync ^^ ?

5) Where are the videos from, and how are they encoded (bitrates, resolution, file-size, etc.)?

6) anything else relevant to the actual sharing of useful information, as opposed to wasting people's time with "blah blah blah".
Joee 3:09 AM 12 March 2010
1. medium

2.?

3. he told me how ever it comes set as default he did not change anything

4. same answer as # 3

5. promo only DFF & DVD encoded with
elgato turbo H.264
apple tv setting
720x480-size
4.3- aspect ratio
auto- overscan
29.97- fps

Now, you're not...thanks for the additional detail. Three other questions:

1) does it work with quality set to "high" (I really wouldn't want to run at medium for gigs myself)?

2) what kind of FPS numbers are you seeing in VIdeo-SL?

3) are effects and the "Melt" transition usable or not? (I've seen selecting the "Melt" transition make framerates go a lot lower).

Thanks again.

Forgot to mention...as was said before, it's really not a valid "real-world" test without actually sending the Video-SL output to an external screen in "fullscreen" mode.
Joee 3:46 AM 12 March 2010
i'll have to call him to get that info!
fcprod1 6:33 AM 12 March 2010
+1 on output to external screen.
Had a minimum spec HP and vidz looked ok on the 3 windows of VSL but looked choppy and quality was bad on external monitor.
nik39 9:43 AM 12 March 2010
Does his Acer support Quartz Compositions?

*runs and hides*

Are you talking about an external drive here? If so, that's not unusual and I've never seen VSL mess up because of a low end external.

Mainly people say it won't work well.
DouggyFresh 6:23 PM 16 March 2010
I think the problem is PC laptops until last year in the low dollar (sub $600) lacked decent video. In my experience, after extensive component testing I found the video card has the greatest effect on PC performance vs processor and memory. Once you have around Core2Duo 2.1ghz or faster with 2 GB of RAM, the video card is the next greatest thing. I tested on 2 AMD 2.6 quad core systems:

Nvidia 9800GTX
Nvidia 9500GT 1GB
ATI Radeon 4670 (integrated)

I found the 9800GTX would get 60fps in almost all scenarios, the 9500GT struggled for 50, and the 4670 was barely adequate.

Given all that, I bought a 2.53 Core2Duo, Nvidia GT 260M w/ 1GB video, 6GB RAM, Windows 7 64bit and I'm very happy with my video performance.
Joee 6:25 PM 16 March 2010
how much $$$$$$$ did it run you
Joshua Carl 7:04 PM 16 March 2010
thats kinda the "story" I preach to everyone.
its not that PC wont run it. its that a pc with inferior specs to the standard MBP
probably wont run it.
just like a plain old mid-level macbook wont run it well either.

people expect 1200 on a pc is alot.
when your mid-range 15" mbp is around 1900

I run a dual 2.53 with the nvidia 8700gt (which is the same as the mbps) and I dropped
2500 on my unit. granted i could have gone without the blue-ray player and got it for 2200. pretty much the same price, and specs as the 15" mbp, but 17"

we all know Im a big supporter of it CAN BE DONE.
and i do EVERYTHING on this machine...everything.
