Once again I'm opening a thread to you guys asking for help. :)
Running a
dell studio
2.0 dual core 2
3gb Ram
Win 7 32 bit
Ns7
When I was running 64 bit I was having random drop outs but was able to run on latency 1 with out ever seeing the midi light come on, but CPU bar was always maxing out and staying in RED for 10-20 sec at a time. Now I'm running 32 bit with a latency that never spikes past mid yelllow on DPC checker and my CPU bar never goes past 1/2 but the MIDI light turns yellow and red as soon as I set my latency on 1 or 2, but on 5 it's perfect.
I've noticed since I do alot of quick fader movments that it is not as exact on latency 5 then 1 or 2. I want 1 or 2 like it was on 64 bit.
Can anyone help??

Oh, just a add.... Some how in all the disableing and tweeking I turned off the switch on the side of my dell that turns wireless on and off.. LOL Can't turn wireless off anymore and can't find out how I did it..

lol u can always turn it on and off by going into device manager and using "enable" "disable" by right clicking the wireless adapter...

I just think it's funny. I searched the internet on how to get it back and can only find people wanting the switch gone and can't, I did it on accident...
Is the Midi light going to be along the same lines as getting my latency down??

Subdriven did you ever get your latency down to 1 or 2? I just got the NS7 and can only go to 5. I also have a dell studio 1537 running windows 7 32bit so I thought you might be the person to talk to. Any help you can give would be great.

Is the Midi light going to be along the same lines as getting my latency down??
with dell there is a bios setting that enables or disables the hardware slider for the wireless and determines what it disables also (bluetooth and or wifi)
furthermore, since you run W7 you should have a 'pro audio/video' power profile which turns off all unnecessaire processes and wireless for you...
but i've seen installations without this profile and i don't know how to obtain it if it isn't present...

Nope.. never got mine under 5. hum... never knew about that pro audio/video thing.. havn't found that yet.. but I have everything I can tweaked.. as soon as I go to lat 2 everything freaks out.. runs great on 5 though!

i have a dell m6400, no problem here (different specs though)
that said, if you are familiar with tweaking windows :) look into the device manager and check the power saving settings on all usb hubs, disable power savings.
i have had numerous problems with usb devices if that is on...
there is also a setting (i guess this is in the power savings profile) to reduce power for the usb, disable that to, and while at it, disable the screen going blank, do not let the harddisk power of etc etc.
also stop windows search service and any antivirus (although i must say i'm using Sophos and never turn it off)
why did you go to 32bit? it seems the machine runs better with 64bit?

It was originaly because itch wouldn't run on any tweak or latency with 64 at the time.. and since I only have 3 mb of ram I stayed with 32 bit.

now the amount of ram doesn't really matter, running 64 bit will not require you to have the double amount of memory, there is only a minor overhead...
IF numark did a good job on their drivers end you'll benefit from the 64bit driver since it is capable of handling twice the amount of data at the same time (assuming they didn't just port it), that said, with the latest driver and firmware i have no issues...

if possible post a list of running services, we could work from there to see what is hogging the system potentially...
also, check the dell support site to see if there are new drivers out (especially system drivers and bios and vid)

issue with the dell site is that I bought my lapptop with vista, and they will only support vista 32 and 64 bit drivers for my dell. lol

drivers for W7 are not available for your service tag?
if so have a look at the device manager to see if all hardware is recognised...

yea, they only give me a list of vista drivers. It worked to get things up and going till I got win 7 drivers.
All my stuff is up and running right ( as far as I know ). But I think some of the drivers I got are not OFFICIAL drivers and may be causing some of my issues. Wanted to get a service tag for another laptop like mine that came with Win 7 to see what they have a dell official drivers.

the problem is that is there are no w7 drivers available another service tag won't help you... you could try and select drivers based on model number instead of service tag...
that said, also try other dell sites, like the uk or so, maybe the drivers are available through other dell sites...
i have an older M90 precision installed with w7 now but no drivers are available for W7 on the dell site and as a result the latency on that machine is much higher then when i ran XP on it...

I've done so much and found nothing can get my latency under 5ms. but on 5ms it is rock solid now-a-days. Just funny how I was on 2ms on 64bit... with old drivers..
marcA
10:44 AM - 13 July, 2010
well based on specs it should run 1ms
but drivers or the absence of them ruins it for you i guess...
what is your model n°?

strange, on the local site only vista drivers available also... you could try and install the vista drivers, maybe start with the vid card driver or look for that driver on the intel drivers site (although chance is very little you'll find it there)

everything is reconized. I've got the intel drivers for the chipsets and video. all my drivers are up to date as far as I know. I've done tons of searching to check and get them. I've been told that it's a component issue with the dell's. that not all the hardware is 100% compatible for our use. for 99% of people they would never notice though. I completly disable my webcam, wireless, inferred, SD slots, firgureprint scanner, ethernet adapter and a few other non used things. No virus scanner running, all non windows apps turned off, everything in start menu disabled, power all set to performance, screen saver off, firewall off, cpu usage set to services instead of programs, ext ext ext...... I can run on 2 ms with the platters off for maybe 5 min then it's over. and the CPU stays at about 10-20% when it freaks out, but the midi light turns red. Latency checker is very low when running with very random spikes. I just think my laptop can't handle it.
marcA

very strange... it seems to me that it should handle but since you've done so much....
if the cpu stays at max 20% then i wouldn't expect the machine to run to hot either, but is still could be a cooling problem, i know it's a long shot... but you'de be amazed at the dust that comes out of the cooling fan's...i'm using a can of compressed air (which you can buy in computer shops i guess) and then from an armlength distance i'm blasting away the dust in the cooling fans, blow at the fan not at the heat sink at the rear...but like said, probably a long shot....
if you have an esata port on the machine and you have an external drive with esata you could try to see if that runs better (so the tracks aren't pulled from the main disk), also a long shot...

im on a dell xps m1530, very similar specs... i installed win 7 64 and im forced to run 5ms (don't know what it is now with the ITCH 1.7, i haven't changed the new setting). I was on 2ms with vista 64.

is it better to run it from a extrnal drive?? or just a esta drive?
djdavez.. I was at 20ms on vista and got down to 5 on 7

well if you have an esata port on your laptop and you only have 1 harddisk in your laptop and you have an external esata harddisk then imho yes it is better to put the tracks on the external since that relieves your main disk from pulling the data off the same disk as windows uses...and it does not hog the usb busses...

may give that a try.. I have 2 externals ( just the insides) that I need to buy cases for to make usb compatable. Any idea if it has to be the new harddrives to work for esta or is it just the case and connection that makes it like that?
marcA

i thing you mean buy cases to make them esata compatible?
now if the drive does not have a sata connection itself i doubt you'll find a controller that converts to esata but i don't know really...
but first check if the laptop has an esata connector
and then try to borrow one before you go out and buy an enclosure
i've dumped all my usb external disks, esata external disks are as fast as internal ones...not comparable to usb speeds :)
but still it would surprise me if that solved the problem honestly...
