using vsl 1.2 text out for Text requests

I was thinking about getting a second inexpensive unlimited text cell phone, and putting on the video output using that fancy new "TEXT" effect...
TEXT YOUR REQUESTS TO 123-456-7890
I was thinking about it as using it not only for requests, but to gather a list of numbers to promote future events to... The club used to have a "Text blahblah to 12345" (it was displayed on another set of screens via DVD) but nobody really signed up and they recently dropped it.
Has anyone done this successfully? Does it really get abused? ("why haven't you played my song yet")...

the genious is you would definatley get a shit ton of bogus responces, the you suck type ones from people being stupid......but you had a great idea, if you put those numbers on a txt list to advertise gigs it would backfire on them

my boys in san antonio have a very huge success with this. go for it. he also sends a txt back to each number to ask if they want to stay updated on info and events. if they yes he puts in a catagory for which ever night and place he was/is at

I put a "Now accepting requests" with my cell number from time to time. Most people don't care. I'm thinkin' about stopping.

The beauty of modern phones is that now you can even block texts. :)

They do something like that at Studio 54 in vegas. But its not to the dj, the random message gets posted on certain screens. People really get a kick out of it. I dont remember the program used, but its cycles through all the texts of the night in case that person missed it.

That may be what they're using. I think it's a waste of money to invest in something like that.

I did it for a few months but it was too much for me, I was getting aprox 150 requests a night and not a single thanks or tip. Now I play whatever I know works and get no more then 10-15 requests a night, I can work with that number :)
pros:
* it's good to get numbers and send txtmsg to promote your gigs.
* instant access to the crowd
cons:
* a lot of people abuse of it and they will send you like 20 request in one night and they may get mad if you don't play the songs or take long to play it.
* don't expect tips
* you are like a jukebox here, its a hard and stress full set

I used QuickerSMS4x demo version and it worked fine. I plug my phone to the laptop, open the software and that's it. Its like checking your email.

I want this soooo badly brought to Serato

I use their software for my laser projector and would love to see Pangolin and Serato work together to add this to Serato. This will be a huge step in the write direction for Serato.

I use Firetext, they have a payment plan which is 150 a month for 6 months. Firetext is OK there supposed to be updating it but its been a while since I recieved anything. The software is cool, I got it to run in Parallels so I didn't need a PC in my booth.
Main thing is you get there number, Eff all the text and what they say....usually gross, stupid, annoying, childish things like Chuck Norris quotes or A/S/L like its AOL in the 90s but bottom line I get there number. Received 1900 something numbers is 5 weeks. If anyone needs help with this hit me up, id be glad to help

Do people get angry about this?

you ask them in text if they want updates for specials or like my friends do in another town, he does a free bottle for the first to get five friends together in the mass text. u can do it in a form or fashion like that. my personal opinion if i did txt-4-requests stuff if they bother to text you, they give up their rights because they really just gave you there number

Haven't really started any spamming as of yet, mainly using it as a conduit to myself. I've been lucky so far and the douche bag factor hasn't been too high. My crowd is mostly alternative types and I guess since it's not being displayed publicly it cuts down the crap.

I think it's because I'm actually telling people to look at the screen when my number pops up. Then, I GET A TON OF REQUESTS. I also add them to my facebook or whatever so I can market to them.
I think it's great. I don't get any weird or bogus messages either. Not a single one. And, when I do get one when someone seems to be getting an attitude because I haven't played their songs I always reply "attitude will get you nowhere with me" and they automatically become nice. hahahaha

Also, I would like to add that I prefer this than having someone come up to me to ask for a request.
Why? Several reasons:
1. I hate drunk asses trying to sing their song to me.
2. Drunk people who I can't understand annoy me.
3. Screaming in my ear. I hate it.
4. Bad breath. I hate it. hahaha
5. People trying to interrupt me when I'm actually in the middle of mixing a song. Wait your turn.
Etc.

How are you using it for FB marketing? Searching by phone number and then messaging or emailing?
I agree with your reasons for doing it this way, but im curious how you find the time to search through all these instantaneous text messages. I really think the crowd at my spot would be texting me every 30 seconds because their song hasnt been played yet........ I may try it and see what happens, at least with google voice i can just block numbers with ease LOL.

I noticed that I get the most messages right after I announce it on the mic. Those that keep sending me requests every few minutes get ignored and they stop.
.... hot girls still come to the DJ booth. Not everyone will text.
I don't delete any messages. The next day, I send a mass text to all those numbers thanking them for their support and add my facebook address on there. If they add me, good. If not, nothing lost.
I've gained quite a few people WHO ACTUALLY SUPPORT ME using this method. I rather do this than try to add random people on facebook or whatever. This reaches my market 100%.

^I Was going to say an alternate method to this would be just to ask people to tweet you their requests instead of a #.. would be a good way to build followers and/or w/ Facebook as well.

Tweeting sounds like a great idea. I'm gonna give that a try this weekend. Text messages to my google voice comes to my phone & don't want the random drunk text at the end of the night from the big girl who needs love, but not from me!
