FINALLY WENT PUBLIC..

DJ Rumors 4:00 AM - 9 February, 2010
Just thought I'd share my FIRST public experience with SL and my Rane TTM57:

Dj'd at a private birthday party this past Friday night at the largest club we have in our city (here's a link of the club: purecolumbia.com ) Hooked everything up to the club system and it was AWSOME! I was a bit worried because some of my tracks arent all that great as far as bit rate (many 128 and 196) but the TTM57 made them sound GREAT! I've had SL for about a year now and my TTM for about 6 months so I wanted to take the time to learn to use everything well before I went public, especially after reading some of the horror stories on here. LOL.
Nevertheless, I played from 9pm to 2:45am without as much as a 'hiccup" with the entire setup!! Gonna list my setup and pc specs just for reference sake to the ones interested.
Equipment:
2 - Technics SL 1210MK
Rane TTM 57SL
Korg Nano Pad
2 - Ortofon Concorde Dj Cartridges
Genre:
Old School R & B with some Hip Hop
Computer Specs: (Desktop)
Gateway 64 Bit w/ Windows XP Pro
AMD Phenomâ„¢ II X4 quad-core processor
8GB DDR2 memory
1TB Hard Drive (Main Hard Drive...NO 3rd party applications on here at all..only drivers and applications required to run Windows..only application running is Scratch Live!)
500 MB Internal Hard Drive (Backup Drive)
500 MB Maxtor One Touch External hard Drive (Music Files on Here only)
ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics w/ 1024MB video memory and DirectX 11
Note: This pc ONLY plays Scratch Live and NOTHING else..No internet at all! I use a Laplink Ethernet Transfer Cable to move my music from my personal pc to this one.

Took pics but they came out too dark in the club..will take some at home and post soon.
Just thought everyone could use some GOOD NEWS about the products we're committed to!

Not too sure ANY mixer will make 128k bitrate tracks sound great...little bit dubious?

But good to hear the gig went well all the same!

I was skeptical going into the show myself..but as I stated..everything sounded great! I did have to keep adjusting my gains a bit to keep songs in line, but overall the AutoGain did it's job.

Just thought it would be nice to hear some Good News,..over all the complaints I see on this forum. MOST problems could be easily resolved by better pc settings and adjustments and preparations. It seems that we have TONS of complaint threads but very few success stories on here.

Here are some pics of the setup guys..keep in mind this is merely my initial HOME setup. I dont keep "heavy" equipment in house.

Not trying to split hairs here....but Auto Gain has nothing to do with bit-rates. 128 files will still sound like crap compared to 320's.

And one more thing...your laptop is a beast!! :)

A quad-core just for SL? You could be playing a game, editing a photo, downloading some *ahem "music," and djing all at same time....

All I'm saying is that AutoGain kept the tracks "somewhat" within range of each other when they played. I can respect you guys on the bit rate deal..but all I can tell ya is that the lower ones didnt sound too bad...not as good as the 320's..but not too bad at all.

Yeah...but I'd rather have the BEST playing SL program out there..besides...I dont play video games and I always have my other pc with me for all that other stuff. Oh..and by the way..it's NOT a laptop..it's a desktop Tower PC specially designed for me. (simply gutted out the original and reinstalled the new stuff) thanks for the nod, though! ;)

Nice, I was wondering...and also jealous...haha. My laptop is dedicated to SL but its only a 3200+ single core. It runs SL like a champ but I can't do other stuff at same time.

Flipsta 7:02 PM - 9 February, 2010
i was wondering about your laptop being a quad-core with 8gb of ram just for SL. lol..not bit-rates. There is no question about bit-rates. If you encode two files from .wav....one 128 and one 320 there is a noticeable difference. Auto-gain won't change that.

how much did the build cost you, im thining about building a desktop from the ground up but i dont know if i would be saving enuogh money to make it worth the hastle
DJ Rumors 8:18 PM - 9 February, 2010
A buddy of mine Built it for me and I purchased most of the hardware from different internet sites. Parts cost me about right around $1000, but believe me, if I had to purchase a pc with these specs..it would be double to three times the cost.
DJ Rumors 8:44 PM - 9 February, 2010
forgot to mention..that that price included small fee my buddy charged me to build it.

You will certainly notice the difference in a strict A/B test of the two files. However.. throw in all the ambient noise in a club.. and knowing that 90% of clubs have, shall we say, less than stellar sound systems.. by and large the crowd won't notice (and perhaps sadly more importantly..care) whether or not its the best bitrate. Especially the later it gets toward closing time.. !!!!

Of course you'd opt not to use low quality files on a very good system. They're only a tiny fraction of your library anyway, right??? :)

Yes You're correct...maybe only a couple hundred files out of 40,000+ are less than 256-320 Bit Rate. Most of the lower bit rates are older and harder to get tracks since I play Old School stuff.

Yes, I never was into the laptop thing. Wanted to be a little different. It's really not that much different, especially now that I have the TTM57, because I RARELY have to use keyboards and mouse I stick the PC under the table and ROLLLLLLL wit it!

I built a new PC for production in fall 2008 for under $700, heres the specs to give you an idea. Keep in mind all these parts would be even cheaper now...all ordered from newegg.

quad-core Q6660 2.4 GHz
4GB RAM
GeForce 8800 GT
640 GB SATA hard drive

Thats not including peripherals; keyboard, mouse, etc. and I already had a monitor, so that could add a couple hundred more. But ya, you can build a banging PC for cheap.

That's about what I paid for my system excluding the $150 I gave my buddy to build it for me. I have a lil more "UMPH" built into mine..but still a TURBO system you have there!

So you want people to evaluate audio-quality by listening to a mix... in compressed format... ?

Noooooooo! That's NOT what I'm suggestion . There were some guys disputing how much of a difference the bit rate made as far as SOUND quality..I'd thought I'd give them a sample of how CONSISTENT the audio stayed during a mix. Which was my ENTIRE point to begin with. When played thru the club system..it sounded just as good..which is what brought the initial debate on bit rate.
Thnx for listening to it though. ;)
papsworth 10:39 PM - 12 February, 2010
I don't want you to take this the wrong way but as a DJ there are certain things you don't do and showing up to a gig with a desktop computer and monitor is one of them.

No offense.

Who in the WORLD made this rule?? I thought being any type of entertainer meant having INDIVIDUALITY. If all of us dj exactly alike..what fun would that be? I"ve always gotten nothing but props and compliments from my setup. It's not like I have the pc sitting up on the table when I did my gig. In fact, it was LESS obvious than a laptop sitting up on top of my equipment. I was in a dj booth and the pc was under the table. I setup 2 hrs before the club even opened, which I assume is the case when most dj's get ready to gig, so no one even saw me setting up.
Hell...I dont see the problem.

I understand your concern...but I don't believe it's no different than the guys that setup 2 turntables and 2 cdj's , or guys that setup a gazillion speakers when they only need a few. All I'm saying is,,,it's not that much of a problem setting up a pc versus a laptop. But I appreciate everyone's opinions.
SuckaDJ 7:28 PM - 13 February, 2010
To me it seems like a laptop you can just show up 5 minutes before a gig, hook up usb, cv's/needles and you're set.

Desktop, omg I can't imagine. Multiple cables to route, to the outlets/desktop to monitor, walking past the people in line with a desktop/monitor. LOL

Try a laptop sometime, makes it a LITTLE bit more easier ;)
DJJOHNNYM_vSL3 7:40 PM - 13 February, 2010
Let him BE. Technically, it's no different than someone showing up with a Karaoke setup.....right?

And I betchu his desktop is more powerful than a LOT of laptops out there.

Plus, think about it.

Who's really gonna steal a DESKTOP? Cats would be scoping out your lappy...right?

Sheer genius.
SuckaDJ 6:38 AM - 14 February, 2010
If it was sheer genius, I'm sure the pros (well the more known DJs) would have already been using their desktops. Plus they wouldn't even have to set it up themselves.

Just sayin..

Well Known DJ's aren't necessarily Technical Gurus.
Discobee 1:10 AM - 15 February, 2010
I once saw a DJ play in a well known Seattle nightclub with his Apple computer, the one that's like all-in-one on the monitor pedestal. He was rockin' it and all you could see from the bar was the back of a flat monitor, which looked just like a laptop. No hatin' on that...he rocked his set.
DJ Rumors 1:35 AM - 15 February, 2010
It's no big deal fellas..really...I just wanted to share how well the first public gig went for me using SSL and the TTM57. So much BAD posts on here...just thought I'd share some GOOD stuff for a change. But everyone's entitle to use whatever setup works for them..as long as it works..LOL!

Because when you read that line, you almost immediately imagine what Bezzle saw... a guy siting in the booth with a huge tower next to the turntable, neon tubes and fans and flickering lights all over the place insinuating that the DJ is playing warcraft rather than DJ'ing... that's what made ME laugh at least. And admit it, if you imagine that picture, it's funny as hell.

But the way DJ Rumors has set it up, it's obvious waaaaaaay different than what I imagined, nice and tidy. Actually, no difference with a laptop at all from the crowd's perspective. And of course it makes no difference in performance with a laptop. Knowing how to rock a crowd has nothing to do with equipment. If you got the skills, even a cassette deck will do.

Cheers Rumors! :o)

It's just a Nano Pad (Yamaha) midi controller. I basically use it for my name drops and setting my loops and cue points at times.
