What about us SL1 users now?

Wazo 7:40 PM - 14 January, 2010
are we dinosaurs now? do we become extinct? whats next for us SL1 users? probably nothing.
young shiz 7:46 PM - 14 January, 2010
Reading is fundamental lol

www.ableton.com

Rane SL 1 RECORDS: A and B pre-fader audio, and sample player audio, as separate tracks.
Dj Shamann 7:47 PM - 14 January, 2010
Why would we become dinosaurs? I don't get this line of thinking on these boards.
Wazo 7:50 PM - 14 January, 2010
i dont care about ableton and all that extra stuff. im going to keep it how i do now. what i meant was what about updates for the SL1. like the PS1, when teh PS2 came out, slowly they stopped making games. same thing here maybe.

will the SL1 still support all these new things?

maybe, i dont know but.....
Dj Suresh 7:52 PM - 14 January, 2010
Why cant they give us SL1 users the ability to add an exturnal sound card for the 3RD deck?????
young shiz 7:53 PM - 14 January, 2010
well bridge, scratch live 2, and the mixer are the new things right?

bridge = works with sl1 (on a limited level)
scratch live 2 = from what i understand, the mods said it will work with sl1
the mixer = sl3 (i assume) built in

so am i missing something?

hope you arent. cause i want it to still be in the loop

i mean, nothing is gonna stop your SL1 from doing what it already does. Why worry?
Wazo 8:00 PM - 14 January, 2010
^^ fo real. (in the ali g voice with a finger slap)
Marx&Villain 8:03 PM - 14 January, 2010
i have the sl1, will i be able to use the 4 decks that serato 2.0 will have the ability to manipulate
Wazo 8:04 PM - 14 January, 2010
maybe if i paint my Sl1 to look like SL3 will that work?
Dj Suresh 8:36 PM - 14 January, 2010
how bout we use 2 sl1's to make it a 4 channel like the new mixer
DJMaytag 8:50 PM - 14 January, 2010

that crossed my mind today too, and it would be GREAT since we'll probably be seeing a number of people dumping SL1's or SL3's soon. Make it happen in the SSL 2.1 update!!!
Dj Suresh 8:55 PM - 14 January, 2010
i would be than happy to buy a next sl1 box if this would happen
DJMaytag 8:57 PM - 14 January, 2010
now that i think about it, i'd probably rather have an SL-1 and an SL-3.
Dj Suresh 1:37 AM - 15 January, 2010
All this talk about extra decks and ableton, but what new features are there for us sl1 users.......... for all i know my sl1 is turning in to a very large paper weight.
Serato, Support
ChrisD 1:46 AM - 15 January, 2010
Scratch Live 2.0 will support the Rane SL 1.

Scratch Live 2 has DJ FX, smart crates, album art, customizable display modes and Playlists amongst other things.

Plenty of new stuff for SL 1 owners.
gotchuckz 1:51 AM - 15 January, 2010
^ same for us 57 owners.
djemkay 2:10 AM - 15 January, 2010
sl1 users will be getting plenty of new stuff but if you want to take advantadge of extra decks and some of the other features then and uprgrade to sl3 is necessary
DJMaytag 2:11 AM - 15 January, 2010
i know i'm going on and on and on about it, but what about using multiple SL-1's (and/or SL-3's)???
Turn Table Tennis 2:13 AM - 15 January, 2010
or hustle on some extra gigs, sell the sl1 and buy the 68.
DJMaytag 2:16 AM - 15 January, 2010
my concerns about the 68 are the same as the 57, what happens if the mixer gets stolen or breaks down? I'd rather have separates, especially since i have a 3 channel mixer. 2 decks plus a dedicated Ableton output would be the bomb (I know, get an SL-3, but...)
Turn Table Tennis 2:19 AM - 15 January, 2010
sell your sl1 and buy an sl3 for a few hundred more. insure your equipment, never let it out of your sight at a club or leave it in a car. simple solutions really.
djemkay 2:20 AM - 15 January, 2010
yeah im in the same boat too i have a nice 4 channel mixer and a sl1 but im already selling it on craigslist and trying to get an sl3. I would love to be able to use 3 decks with the sl1 but doesnt look like its going to be possible

so, to be clear, the SL3 is neccacery to use the extra decks?
DJMaytag 2:27 AM - 15 January, 2010
SL3 = 3 decks. probably the route i'm going to have to go if i want two vinyl decks and a dedicated 3rd output for Ableton.
djemkay 2:28 AM - 15 January, 2010
yes sofar thats the only way
DJMaytag 2:30 AM - 15 January, 2010
there are going to be a boatload of SL-1's for sale, it just seems like a waste unless it were possible to utilize two of them at the same time.
djemkay 2:32 AM - 15 January, 2010
yeah thats why i put mine up right away before there are to many out there

A 3rd deck requires a 3rd pair of audio inputs and outputs.

So that means using either a Rane SL-3 or the new Rane SIXTY-EIGHT mixer.
Turn Table Tennis 2:57 AM - 15 January, 2010
is there a wiring digram available of the sl3 and 57?
RodSMFunk 3:12 AM - 15 January, 2010
Maybe dumb question or its been asked but...does the bridge part work with SL1?
VJ Justin Allen 3:12 AM - 15 January, 2010
Yes, in a limited fashion.
RodSMFunk 3:14 AM - 15 January, 2010
Hmmm...wonder how limited.
RodSMFunk 3:24 AM - 15 January, 2010
So they never said when the Serato Live 2.0 was coming out yet then huh?
Marty Mcfly 3:24 AM - 15 January, 2010

Thanks alot Eru. Im sure u have tested it Eru,...does it seem at least a lil bug free? Sometimes a beta project turns into the real thing because it either doesnt have any bugs or like 1 or 2 very small things....u kno.

FWIW, i also do software upgrades to my Blackberry with the risk of bricking it every time i update it, where a loss of a phone is arguably more detrimental to my daily life than a loss of my DJ'ing ability (i've still got tons of vinyl as an backup).
DJMaytag 3:51 AM - 15 January, 2010
well, for now being able to use an external Firewire audio interface for Ableton suits my needs, so I'm good with hanging onto the SL-1 for a while longer.

thanks for all the info Chris!

indeed. i just made the assumption that with Ableton residing "inside" SSL, that it would be forced to use the SL-x box. I'm elated that that is NOT the case. :-)

Question about the mixtape fader automation with the SL1...I know the automation wont be saved as per editing but if i wanted to record a mix (not to concerned with the editing) would I be able to do that, like wuold the final product mixtape be recorded into ableton and not just all the tracks that i played channeled out (currently i dont use ableton so i dont know its recording capabilities)....or will i still need to run from my mixer record out to a seperate PC (or back into my mac through the soundcard)

to be fair having an SL1 does limit you from certian features (more features than most other eqipment) but its not the end of the world all the basics are still VERY there and a good bit of the goodies too so you really cant complain, you still have all the tools there for you to do an amazing set, only a poor craftman blames his tools for his works shortcommings

The SL1 and SL3 have no idea what your final mix sounds like (where/how you mix, EQs, etc) so you would need to route your mix POST-mixer back into your comp somehow, probably via the mic/mini input on your computer. The bridge w/ SL1 will basically create two Ableton live audio tracks that record everything that happens on each deck.

damn it it just seems like you cant get the full deal outta the package, you need the SL3 for a 3rd channel to use the ableton stuff but then you cant record fader movment, to record fader movment you need a 57 (68 is way outta range for me not bitching just fact) but with the 57 you get the fader movment but you lose your ableton 3rd channel

This is *not* a stratefic marketing move. There is NO way the SL1 *or* SL3 knows what you are doing on an external mixer. How should the device know what eq, line or crossfaders you are moving?! With the TTM57/68 of course SSL knows what the faders are doing.

I am in the same boat, but using 1200s and an Empath. No one has definitively said whether the new versions will allow 3-video mixing... if so, we might want to upgrade to an SL3.

SL3 = 3 decks, but no fader automation if I ever get into the Bridge mixtape possibilities... plus that still leaves me using my Nocturn to do video transitions

TTM57 = fader automation in the Bridge and linked video crossfading, but no 3rd deck

Pioneer 800 + SL3 = fader automation in Ableton still might not work, and the combo would cost almost as much as a Sixty Eight

decisions, decisions!

Looks like it's time to start banging old ladies for $50 a pop lol.

actually, if you had a midi mixer (non rane) you could assing faders, x fader and EQ to that mixer and re-do the fader movements in realtime on ableton too... would be kind of weird tho

If you had a midi mixer, you wouldnt have to redo anything, as the movements could be recorded in Live at the time of the mix

LOL seriously though if you have the SL1 or 3 the "mixtape" function is kind of a joke, since it cant read your fader or EQ all its doing is puttin tracks to a channel in order.......so if you make an hour "mix" all you did was take an hour to drop those tracks into ableton in that order, a task that should have taken you 5 minutes at most to do by drag and drop

true. it would still save time even with just an sl1/3

Call me a dinasour if you want for having SL1 but I'm not ready to upgrade yet until I can afford a 68.

at this point, if I should get a 68, I'm still hanging onto my SL-1. that would suck to go to a club where there was no Serato support, so the SL-1 would be a nice backup.

i have enough anxiety everytime i bring my 57 to a club (even if i can't live without the features)

having a 68 would mean even more anxiety. at least the 57 is compact and easily transportable...

many of the higher end clubs in nyc, tenjune, marquee, pink elephant, etc dont have the 57 as a mixer, so i guess im gonna have to hold on to my sl1 and just get shell out for the 68.
