Owned Serato: Since first day available for retail sales
Computer: ibook and Powerbook
Crash: Yes...several times, always due to external hard drive failure, USB Cable, or corrupt file.
When I used the internal hard drive...no crashes due to OS or Hardware.
DJ Michael Basic 9:14 PM - 3 October, 2006
I've got Serato running on an HP ZV6000, ZD7000, and my home computer which is just built from parts. No crashes on any of them. The only time I thought it crashed, it turned out my external hard drive got unplugged.

The guy I work with at Yankee Doodles has a mac (not sure what kind) and he hasn't had any crashes in the year that we've been working together but one time when I plugged my fat32 external drive into his, and then later unplugged it, his started acting weird (sluggish, songs skipping, etc.) so he had to reboot. I think it's just cause it's an old computer though.
Dj Chinn 9:20 PM - 3 October, 2006
-Had it for 9 months
-Toshiba L15 Satellite
-Never crashed (knock on wood also)
DJ_Mike_Coquilla 9:25 PM - 3 October, 2006
been using Serato like for over 2 years.

crashed like 5 different times.

actually, each of those 5 times, it was actually my laptop.

for some odd reason (maybe cause i'm too much in a hurry to settin up) the laptop would shut down because "I KEEP FORGETTING TO PLUG IN THE lappy POWERSUPPLY!!!!!!" ....battery died each of those 5 times :) tha last time was over this weekend at the Puma store
djransom 9:47 PM - 3 October, 2006
I've been using Serato since February of this year. I'm on my 3rd laptop now after having a Dell & an Acer & now I have an Apple iBook G4. This is by far the best I've owned out of the 3 as I haven't experienced any crashes and I'm able to run it on the lowest USB setting.

Owner since April 2005.

SSL Version 1.6 and always testing the newest beta.
iBook 1.2GHz PowerPC G4 OS 10.3.9
1.25GB DDR SDRAM
120GB Ext Firewire/USB Western Digital HD
iTunes 6.0.4

My system is operating flawlessly. The only problems I have ever encountered with Scratch Live has been 1 crash caused by a corrupt file using version 1.3 and built overviews 3 times. This last problem is something the Serato team is aware of and they will implement a fix in version 1.5. Also, I want to mention that the corrupt file just prevented from using/doing anything in SSL which caused me to force shut down the program and restart it to make it work, but the audio kept playing which allowed me to play a backup CD while I restarted.

i have versions 1.6.2 and my macbook pro crashes when i inplug my usb and plug it back in...anyone have that problem?
Dj Ian D 6:29 AM - 10 October, 2006
I've been reading a lot about so many problems that seem so easily fixed with some up to date hardware and software. Here's an idea, get a new computer. You want no problems, go with a Mac. You don't want it to crash, run Serato by itself. If you want to know how much cpu serato takes up on your computer, on a mac, open Utilities in your Applications folder. There you we'll see how much room you have to play with before overloading your computer and causing these crashes. I own a Mac g4 powerbook 15incc. I can run serato, itunes, and Protools at the same time. Haven't had a crash yet. Just watch how many commands you give your computer before it executes it. Too many will always cause problems which I'm sure your all aware of. Dj Ian D
rockyfour4 2:25 PM - 10 October, 2006
Thanks for the good advice Dj Ian D. The thing is thatIi am only running Serato by itself and when I plug my usb back in after someone else has played, that is when my machine freezes and I have to comepletely re-start my machine. my MacBook is new and I also just updated my Itunes to version 7 and my Serato is version 1.6.2. I have built my overviews and I have re scanned my id3 tags. Not really sure what I can do next besides reload Serato. anyone...?

I leave everything in,,,,roughly 12,000 on the internal. I think it's just the laptop because on my inte IMac it doesn't do this and on my friends new Macbook it is a lot smoother

take a look at your cpu options,
is it on automatic or max power???
i changed it yesterday and now its
much better!!!

Mine crashed for the first time tonight.

I have a powerbook G4 and used cd's tonight. The songs wouldn't load up on the right table, there was no sound and the clock on the table was off center ( when it works correctly the clock is in the center)??? It worked correctly for about 3 and a half hours at the gig, went to use the bathroom real quick, and all of a sudden it crashed out of nowhere???? Like I said it was working fine, but Serato seems to bug out when you don't want it to sometimes, it's all in your connectors. I rebooted the program and didn't have a problem, too bad that the end of the gig went sour!!!!

any tips to avoid crashes or helpful advice please email to:

Don´t think that the Celeron is the problem. The problem with PC is that you have so much stuff installed and things running in the background , that makes the cokputer slow + the fact that some thigs ( like drivers ) may cross with eachother and one of them may not work. If you have a PC , or a laptop that u use for more then just serato , my advice is to install 2 XP , one for everything else , and one just for serato. I had that solution when i used PC for producing. Never, not once , i had any problems. It´s an extra gig on you HD , but it´s woth it. When it comes to versions , which use and not to use , 1.4 is stabile , yes , but 1.5 and above have the loop in them , and that is such a powerfull tool to be ignored =) Go with the 1.5 or 1.6.1. Lets face it , anything , on computer , whatever it is PC or mac , can crush, and that´s the fact.....

I have been using Serato for almost 9 months.. use it on both platforms.. PC and MAC

HP laptop 60g 1.5GHZ 512 ram.. Runs well, perfoms well, NEVER crashed..

MACBOOK 80g 2.0GHZ, 1GB ram.. Runs and perfoms like a porshe,
NEVER crashed..

I don't understand why people on both formats have so many issues.. Never had a one!! Use it 4 nights a week at my residencies..

1. I've owned it since it came out.
2. I use a 2.8Ghz P3 with a gig of RAM (SSL & this PC have been used together since day one)
3. It has crashed several times, but on versions 1.4 and earlier. I HAD to use 1.2 or 1.3 until 1.5 came out because 1.4 could never be trusted.

Note: Rane replaced my Serato unit after not being able to figure out why it kept crashing; however, 1.5 came out about the time I got my replacement, so I don't know if the box was the problem or if it was the software (although 1.2 & 1.3 worked fine).

how do you come up wit this stuff?
DjWoody 8:51 PM - 3 November, 2006
1.- Owned Serato since Dec 2005

2.- Crashed 5 Times.

A.- It crashed at Spundae in front of 1000 people. Luckily I had one of those EMERGENCY CD's Mike recommended doing and it saved my show. However, my computer wouldn't turn back on, and later found out my motherboard had fried.

B.- It crashed at a small club, the music kept going so it gave me enough time to switch tracks without stopping the music.

C.- It crashed three times this past weekend. All in less than an hour. Luckily I was recording a demo, so it was no big deal.

3.- I use an Apple 2Ghz Intel MacBook with 1.25 Gigz of RAM

I have been Using Stantons Final Scratch for over a year, and though I have not had any problems with it, I decided that like every other piece of equipment I should have a back up. I had heard alot about scratch live so I decided instead of duplicating FS2 i would order Scratch live........seems to be a BIG mistake so far. I have yet to use it for a gig due to th inconsistancy of the program. I run 2 laptops with scratch live on the second, so far I have had 3 instances in which the driver did not recognize the hardware and i have had to reinstall it on the spot. The first instance was one in wich, foolishly didnt bring my FS2, and I did not have the SSL software on hand so I ended up burning the CDs on the spot before playing them. It does what it is suppose to do most of the time.....i suppose? But it will never be more that a backup to me.

***A few notes from Experiance***
-If you can afford it get a backup laptop to use exclusively for DJing.
-Always Bring a backup of the software, whether on a memory stick on your key chain or burned on a disc, to prevent you from getting burned.
-Always Bring Blank CDs, You May Haveto burn music on the spot.
-Try to use more than one program if you decide to go digital

......thats all folks

qxest, sorry to hear of your issues with SSL. It's quite odd that so many here are having great experiences with their SSL (including myself).

i'm sure if you open up a thread describing your issues with details included (lappy specs, what ssl version, ttables/cdj, exact problem) in the help section (www.scratchlive.net) there might be someone who has a solution (moderators and or fellow forum users).

i have gone thru these and here are the tally's so far..give or take one or two due to the explanations given by the users...

PC TOTALS:
29 users
Users WITHOUT crash - 21
Users WITH crash - 8

MAC totals:
21 Users
Users WITHOUT crash - 9
Users WITH crash - 12

again I could be off a couple. I also didnt really take into account users who said they had crashes with beta versions, I also considered crashes due to CORRUPT files a NO if the user said no crashes since the corrupt files were erased...im mad bored at work

I really would like more people to weigh in here... or Tigo if you find a moment between posting on here and eating at Wendy's - how about you scour thru the Help section and find a few more peeps with crashes and add those stats here too.
DJ_Mike_Coquilla 12:33 AM - 7 November, 2006

another thread goes west *sigh*.. unstickied
DJRodrigoSM.br 11:14 PM - 8 November, 2006
too bad, really...
mind you, it's far more likely that people who did have any crashes will respond to this.
BTW, every single one of my crashes happened when loading a file, never half way through a song, and the songs always kept on playing.
Dj KaGeN 11:59 PM - 9 November, 2006
after 2 years of getting my ear bashed in on this forum, I finally had some form of proof willfully typed in by all the mac owners.

And because it's unstucked now - I'm going to add this..

www.scratchlive.net

They still have basic issues!! Revision after revison it still maintains its issues. Run windows on it and it goes away, to me this is pure poetic justice. Paid to much for a brand and you're still getting the shaft and smiling about it. Carry on.
