I've always heard it takes leather balls to play rugby!
ejayian 10:25 PM - 2 October, 2006
Damn, thats like pro football with no fucking pads.....Crazy shit.
sweetL 11:31 AM - 3 October, 2006
ejayian> yes it is!

american football obviously has its history lying in rugby.

just like baseball, has its history lying in 'rounders', an english victorian game (for women).

thats why english people detest americans calling football 'soccer' when its clearly football, and american football is just rugby, but not proper rugby because you're allowed to wear pads.

that, ladies and gentlemen, is what you call, a rant.... lol
MusicMeister 5:43 PM - 3 October, 2006
Yea... wimpy Americans wearing pads and stopping the game constantly while trying to play rugby....

There used to be a semi-pro American football team here in Pensacola, Florida called the Pensacola Wings. My parents would go to the games sometimes and I always looked forward to the half-time more than the game. That's when the local rugby club would come out and do exhibition games sometimes.

NO its NOT Rugby by any stretch of the imagination.

The only thing that may be a tad tad TAD similar is the shape of the ball.

But yes "gridiron's" origins stemmed from rugby just like "aussie rules football" did. The only game closer to rugby is Rugby League (RFL) that also had its origins from rugby.

The differences between gridiron and rugby are too many to name. I have played both - rugger since I was a kid ... gridiron casually at a non-competing college.
