Unplugged hard drive by mistake

furiousstylz 5:01 AM - 18 November, 2009
While analyzing files, I accidently unplugged the usb to my external hard drive. It gave me that message that says not to do that and unplug it properly next time. However, when I went to go back into the SL, my Mac wasn't reading the external hard drive. It was just spinning and thinking. When I force closed down the SL, unplugged the SL (properly this time) and loaded back up the SL, it wasn't recognizing any of my crates and it started spinning again. I closed everything again and just opened the hard drive w/o opening the SL. Everything was still on my hard drive. But when I tried to load SL, it still wouldn't read it. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brandon

Let me guess... you didn't format your hard drive as Journaled Extended.... did you?
furiousstylz 5:44 AM - 18 November, 2009
im going to say no b/c I have no idea what that is.

Let me ask you this. When you bought your Western Digital hard drive. Was it formatted for a mac or a pc? In other words, is it fat32 formatted?
furiousstylz 5:49 AM - 18 November, 2009
it was for a mac....

Hook up the hard drive to your computer. Select the drive and do command + i for more info. What is the format of the drive in the info box?
furiousstylz 5:58 AM - 18 November, 2009
it says mac os x extended journaled

Awesome. Good. So, you can access your files directly like that but they just don't show up in SSL?
furiousstylz 6:03 AM - 18 November, 2009
yes...when i plug the hard drive in, I can copy a folder form the ext. hard drive and put it on my desktop. But when i try to access them in the SSL, it just spins. Ive pulled the stupid hard drive thing out before w/o ejecting it properly. Is this b/c I was analyzing files at the time? I have a gig tomorrow so Im a little stressed. Thanks a million, btw, for the help.

You may have corrupted your data file...

thats weird....i tried a different USB cord and tried to load the SSL and it worked fine. All my music from the hard drive was there. Huh. I looked at the corrupted file link. Should I do that anyway or do you think it was possibly a bad USB cord?
sixxx 6:11 AM - 18 November, 2009
It is possible to have a bad USB cord. :)

So, if all is good now with the new usb cord... time to get rid of the old one. They're cheap anyway!

But, having just a bad usb cord would mean no connection to the drive at all.... with SSL or whatever. So, I don't know if it was your USB cord or not (probably not). But, since it's working now, make sure you back up your files!!!!
furiousstylz 6:15 AM - 18 November, 2009
ok, so do u recommend going through the steps on that link and doing all that anyway? Oh, and the USB was having trrouble staying in the port on the external, so maybe that was y. Hell, IDK!!! Vinyl was waaaaaaaaaaaaay easier sometimes!

not necessarily. I had a chord that, when I plugged it in, the HD started spinning, but the computer didn't read the drive. Just get a new chord or 2. And yeah, BACK YO ISH UP!

He said he was able to copy files off the drive.... they were not recognized by ssl so I don't think it was the cord. HOWEVER, if it wasn't staying in place, time for a new one.
