Serato Video General Discussion

Talk about Serato Video and Video-SL.

Help me rip my new Promo Only DVD's

djtroymx1 1:08 AM - 17 November, 2009
I have been through pages of info on many forums and I am stumped on whats the best way to rip my videos. I was using DJ Extractor because I was overwhelmed with info and settings on other programs such as Handbrake. Now I have installed Windows 7 and I am getting an error that will not let me rip the videos with DJ Extractor. I also would love to know I am ripping them in the best way possible.
I have a VERY important gig coming up and I would gladly shoot someone some Pay Pal loot if they could walk me through the best way to get these files on my HD.

Rip them with dj extractor on a win xp machine and encode them to mp4 with handbrake
djtroymx1 4:20 AM - 17 November, 2009
This sounds like a great idea. Is there a tutorial on how to get the best handbrake settings for playing videos with virtual DJ in a club setting with SD LCD TV's?

djtroymx1 11:16 AM - 17 November, 2009
Ok I used DJ Extractor to rip and tag the VOB files. I purchased Xilisoft Video Converter to encode them. Does anyone have a tutorial or settings for this program?

Here is why I use it for video

Here is some other comparisons between the two application regarding video:

Cons for Serato Video:

- You can only use ONE mixer to do it. And you HAVE to buy it & the plug-in to do video. (roughly about $1,400 just to do it)

- With only being able to only use one mixer means lugging it around & talking venues into letting you set it up. Why should you carry and expensive mixer to a CLUB? What if it breaks? You are S.O.L.

- Quality of of video output lacks compared to VDJ using the EXACT SAME FILES!

- Can't customize controls over the software on the mixer for video effects, trans, etc.

- Updates are taking forever and didn't even resolve some of the important issues surrounding PC users. (I own both MAC & PC)

- Serato is NEW to video and it will take some time get it as solid as other companies who have been doing it for 4 years already (Virtual DJ)

- Can only use limited video file types. Mainly H.264 (mp4) videos. If you have an existing library it will take a while to get the right quality settings and let alone time to encode your library over to this very restrictive format for video.

- video preview screens can be REALLY small of different resolutions for you computer. Would be nice to be able to resize it accordingly.

- nothing is open source for plug-ins or skins.

- no text plug-in for on screen scrolling text or logo watermark effect.

Pros for VDJ:

- MIDI... supports ANY MIDI mixer on the market to control the software. I can plug in my MIDI out of my NI Audio DJ soundcard into a Pioneer DJM-800 and control video crossfading and whatever using the mixer. Any MIDI device!

- Open source for plug-ins, skins, etc. There are brilliant talented people out there who have improved skins, effects, transitions, etc for VDJ that makes it that much better to use. If your smart enough and know someone who is.. you can get some custom things accomplished with it.

- Open to MANY video formats including VOB/MPEG-2 video files that usually come directly from a DVD. In other words... it takes minutes to rip and entire DVD from like Promo Only, name the files and have them READY TO PLAY! Downside of course is the size difference... but that is a different topic.

- You can completely CUSTOMIZE your shortcuts on your keyboard, midi device for EVERY feature of the software, including calling to specific transitions, effects, etc. (very useful)

- Recently improved timecode makes it very comparable to Serato's timecode! Believe me this was a con for this software at one time and it is really TIGHT now!

- Can use Serato's TIMECODE vinyls & other timecode records on the market like Tracktor, Miss Pinky, etc.

- Ability to walk into ANY venue or situation and do video! You can have custom shortcuts to control video on your laptop if you have NO mixer that is MIDI available.

- Supports iTunes, Serato's crates, and even explorers style browser for your files.

- Feature called "filter folder" allows custom folders to find specific files. For example "most played tracks", "Least played songs", "Songs in certain BPM ranges" ... whatever your heart desires. Endless possibilities.

- has plug-ins that are made for TEXT on the screen for scolling, flashing, etc. And has a plug-in for putting your logo on the screen and change the opacity of it on the screen.

Thanks for the help. I heard you guys were experts here on ripping videos. I have found what I need on the VDJ forums. IM OUTTA HERE!!!!!

PS Serato bows to Traktor Pro for music also!!!

Im just gonna say 2 words.

ILL INFORMED.
DJ-Phat-AL 12:27 AM - 18 November, 2009
wow... you know what is funny. I think he copy and pasted what I wrote a LONG TIME AGO!! times have changed... but he left out how I put both pros and cons to both softwares.

too funny...

anywho...

* You DON'T have to buy the ttm57sl mixer anymore... you CAN use ANY mixer now..

* quality has improved and it depends on your encoded videos as well.

* updates are taking as long as they need to... period!

* customizing transitions, effects, etc... isn't necessary right now. I don't feel any lacking in my show what-so-ever since I am fully using VSL for over a year full time instead of VDJ.

now... the cons of VDJ...

* not solid...
* takes forEVER to come up with a decent working system.
* not widely used in the main clubs and lounges, so you have to rearrange a booth anyways to accommodate your PC tower or whatever...
* too many variables with configurations, open source for effects, etc... cause MANY problems.
* refuse to get laughed at by other PROFESSIONAL DJ's while spinning.

I was going to quote that part as well.

"Yo, you running vsl...nah I got VDJ."

"Sorry to hear that" while leaving the shitty dank bar he was playing in.
PopRoXxX 3:50 AM - 18 November, 2009
DUDE! Does this guy know anything about VSL?! For real! Besides the video formats and text plugin. VSL does everything he said it doesn't! LMFAO!!

Where does he get all his info? --> Oh ....... Right ....... VDJ forum.

Nuff Said!

You guys are so great. I knew this would stir the bee hive.
Can Serato play jpegs or movie clips while playing MP3's? Can it scroll text across the screen?? Curious.
This is the only reason I have to use VDJ. Its a strip club application.
DJ-Phat-AL 10:39 AM - 18 November, 2009
sounds like a good ONLY reason to use VDJ...

Just a guess but I don't think there are too many strip club DJ's using VSL.

VSL is geared toward general or specific market DJ's who spin mobile or mainly nightclubs.

Strip clubs are a WHOLE different thing... you can use iTunes to do strip clubs...
all you need is that cheesy voice and your basic downloaded mp3's .... not much to it.

I am pretty sure no one is paying attention to video mixing in a strip club...
DJ-Phat-AL 10:41 AM - 18 November, 2009
btw... the ONLY reason I used VDJ for a number of years in the past...
is it was the only application that could do video...

Then Serato finally released their plug-in. I bought a Mac Book Pro & ttm57sl and have never looked back at VDJ. No reason to. VSL just works and works great... no problems!

I don't need text on a screen... I have a mic...
PopRoXxX 1:03 PM - 18 November, 2009
VSL can play video loops on top of MP3's. As for text scrolling and JPG overlays. I have quartz files that I overlay on videos that I and others have made to scroll text and drop JPG overlays. So yes, it can be done! (Plus I hear that the Serato guys are working on this for the future - so whenever that is that will also be a plus too).

We ARE here to help anyone who has questions. Just don't post a long rant with info that isn't on the mark. Make sure you read for yourself what a program can and can't do. Don't listen to others tell you what it can and can't do.
DJ DisGrace 1:54 PM - 18 November, 2009
you guys were way too nice to him IMHO

i hear VDJ is implementing a scheduling feature to make sure dancers go on in the right order, with the correct songs lined up - automixed of course

djpuma_gemini 3:32 PM - 18 November, 2009
NO one ever said there wasn't going to be text scroll or jpg support.

I like the way serato does things a little at a time.

I'm sure they could release every feature in the world without testing it and be like, "yeah we got this this this and that," but they don't because they would rather have stable software and slowly implement and test new features.

Do people want text scroll and recording features, sure, but it won't stop you from performing and doing your thing in a club or wherever.
PopRoXxX 3:52 PM - 18 November, 2009
^^^^^ Agreed!
Joshua Carl 4:05 PM - 18 November, 2009
My friend uses VDJ at a strip club to do video.

its great software for what he does.

loads 2 songs at a time.
(each dancer gets two songs)
Uses auto mix (he talks over the mix anyways)
occasionally scrolls a txt announcment.
sits back, drinks, looks at tits all day, collects a check

VDJ certainly has its applications.

I know of 4 places that are doing this...

I really dont know the rational behind it.
I know they play alot of the dirtier videos, but nothing too rediculous

djtroymx1 10:09 PM - 19 November, 2009
Well thanks for the info.
For you guys who think others were being too nice well why dont you try being mean instead of commenting on how others were too nice.
I work at the biggest strip club corporation in the world Spearmint Rhino. Most big strip clubs use video. Sapphires in Vegas has been using video for years and I know all their guys use Virtual DJ. I know Virtual sucks but for a strip club it seems like its the best option for the job.
I have been a DJ for 19 years and lucky for me and strip clubs I am able to make close to $100k a year with my "cheesy" voice.
I also use Trakto Pro in my club gigs and I opened for Bad Boy Bill last week. I am opening for Oscar G this Wednesday. I am opening for Chris Moody and Roger Sanchez on Dec 12th. Seb Fontaine in December and Boris in January and have played alongside loads of big named DJs. Not too bad for a Virtual DJ jock playing videos..........
I just had some simple questions and for you guys who answered them for me THANK YOU!!!
DJ'Que 10:13 PM - 19 November, 2009
