I think mp4/aac is correct for video, but alac it ok for audio only...

VSL doesn't support lossless audio in mp4 containers with H.264 encoding. In fact, I don't know of any mp4 decoders that do. Enlighten me if you know of any.

I've been encoding lossless (ALAC) audio into MP4 files using Compressor (part of Final Cut Pro).

The files play fine in VSL.

The one issue I do notice is that the BPM's SSL calculates for these files do not show up in iTunes.

Especially with a completely free cross-platform tool like MPEG Streamclip (among others) around....I just don't get it.

Haven't fully tested the output in Serato Video... however Ableton 8 will let you export video files with uncompressed audio.

I hope this answer makes up for all my questions recently.

You are correct, the only way to get uncompressed audio is to export to a QT file.

Serato seems to 'officially' want h.264 MP4s with AAC audio. You can get it to 320K in an MP4, but so far I haven't been impressed with Ableton's video export quality at all...

I will let you know if I find a solution.

Well, you can't retain the original quality when you convert the format.
If you have to convert the format, use joyoshare media cutter to reduce the quality loss as little as possible.
