Damn, I have been waiting for these forever. too bad they don't fit in any laptops. I only have a 15"macbook pro, so, no go for me. I can't believe WD would rush the release like that. FAIL
Joee 9:33 PM - 19 September, 2009
they fit in all unibody macbook's,macbook pro's....and the 17 inch pre unibody macbook pro
nliz24 9:36 PM - 19 September, 2009
*750 GB and 1 TB models are 12.5 mm high and may not be compatible with all notebook systems. Consult system specifications for maximum allowable drive height before attempting to install. For Apple MacBook models, this drive only fits inside the Pre-'Unibody' MacBook Pro 17" models

Copy and pasted from your link

If you really need a terabyte drive in your laptop *right now*, by all means.

But considering 500gb 2.5-inch drives are around $100, and the 750gb drive is $188, you're effectively paying a big premium for those last 250gb on the 1tb drive.
lvmez 1:25 AM - 20 September, 2009
is the 750gb and the 1tb going to slow the machine down?

I haven't tested them, but from the specs I see no reason to expect them to be slow.

One detail concerns me though:

The 750gb and 1tb drives are 5200rpm, not the 5400rpm that most drives run at.

I'm concerned that shaving off the 200rpm might have been necessary to prevent overheating, and therefore slowing the spindle down was basically a design-hack.

If these drives are in fact "pushing the envelope" (or close to it) as far as operating temperatures, that might have negative implications for reliability.

I think I just ejaculated a little
DJ AKIE 1:10 AM - 21 September, 2009
As soon as a store or online store gets them in stock i will have one and I'm sure they do fit all unibody models.....try using a ruler and you will see that it will clear 12.5mm. Also if anyone knows any place that have them in let me know. PM

are you going to use it for video......your not worried that it's 5200rpm
Joee 9:31 PM - 21 September, 2009
Charlie Five 10:02 PM - 21 September, 2009
The odds you would notice a diff at 5200rpm is not likely. Not for what we do. What you may notice is your have a higher speed HD is more heat...
chriscraze 3:07 AM - 22 September, 2009
Im waiting for the 7200rpm model gentlemen! Im running 2 - 500gb 7200's in my HP. (Which by the way crushes my crack book pro that i sold to get it)

djpuma_gemini 3:17 PM - 23 September, 2009
Just pulll out the dvd drive in the old style macbook pros and drop in another 500gig drive. Cheaper than paying for a 1tb
Joee 6:12 PM - 23 September, 2009

I got this drive and installed it on my Macbook Pro 17" pre unibody version 3,1. I have been doing video and audio for about 2 weeks so far and have no problems. Used superduper to clone my previous drive and then installed it. Im also using snow leapord. 2.4ghz, 4gigs of ram and now 750gb.

My boy on the other hand, has a brand spanking new 13inch unibody macbook pro and he has had several issues and he is using audio only with SL. He did not use super duper and used an external to copy files over to the new hard drive.

I also got it from new egg for about $140.

I personally love it!
sixxx 6:00 PM - 10 November, 2009
Externals are the best... computer fails? No problem. Hook up the drive to another lappy and you're ready to go. If you use 'CODES" like I do, (no playlists or crates), you'll be up and running in no time at all!

I am DJ Phat AL and I approve that message.

but if you are using a Mac Book Pro then chances of a failure is slim to none.

So, running an older MacBook Pro (Pre Unibody, "Penryn" type), what's the best upgrade disk option? Using externals now, looking to go all internal storage for gigs, as big as possible, fast as possible, without overheating issues...?

Current drive 200GB 7200 rpm... and run all my music of a rugged lacie 500GB FW 800
djpuma_gemini 4:37 PM - 10 December, 2009
On older macs (like mine) you can pull out the dvd drive and install one of these store.mcetech.com

and another 500 gig drive.

So, technically you can have 1TB or more, not sure if 750gb's are out in the 9mm size.

I said fuck it and bought an external to drop my videos on and have my audio on the internal which freed up about 300 gigs of space.

My 500gb internal was down to 10 gigs of free space and was running very slow.

Great recomendation! I wish they made those universally for pcs!

Thanks puma gemini! taking out the DVD/"superdrive" is not an option for though. I'm one of those extinct people who both buy & recieve cd's from stores/labels on a weekly basis. Also I use the drive for delivering content on DVD's (I do video editing and motion graphics design)

Looks like the 750 is my best bet then? Do the come in 7200 rpm editions?
djpuma_gemini 7:08 PM - 10 December, 2009

Not sure about 750Gb in 7200. I highly doubt they do at the moment.
Culprit 7:20 PM - 10 December, 2009
nice thanks! My alienware has easy access removable bays as well, but man you can do alot with that as well. Always wanted one of these!

The largest 9.5mm height 2.5-inch drive available as of right now is Western Digital's 640gb.

I installed one in my MacBook Pro last week, and one as a backup in an external enclosure, and they're working fine. Running no hotter than the 500gb drives they replaced, and seems to be slightly faster (probably due to the higher data density on the platters).

I chose not to go with the WD 750gb 12.5mm drive for a variety of reasons, though the extra 110gb of space would have been nice. Hopefully by the time I run out of room on the 640gb drives there'll be better options available in the larger capacities.
