Forum moderation and banning people

SERATO MODERATORS: Why are you seemingly selective and unbalanced in your banning and "discipline" procedures? "
I'm sure there are cases where the moderation of this forum, and especially banning people, might be unbalanced. Mostly, this is because we don't have the time to read through every post. If Clark or anyone else has any specific complaints, please let me know.
You will not be banned for swearing. We'd prefer if you didn't swear, just for the sake of politeness, but if you must, so be it.
The terms and conditions of the forum are:
1. Be nice to others
2. Not pass yourself off as a Serato or Rane employee
3. Not post advertisements for any product or service
Very simple really. Most people are banned for violating the first one. In fact I believe all bannings are about #1. Sometimes we'll warn someone, depending on how rude they are being. We generally don't care what was said to provoke the person concerned - if they are blatantly rude to other people, they'll be warned or banned. Of course if someone else said something rude to them, they'll be warned or banned too.
If you have a complaint about the conduct of any individual on the forum, please PM one of the moderators:
Sam: www.scratchlive.net
Josh: www.scratchlive.net
Matt: scratchlive.net
Shaun: www.scratchlive.net
Zach: www.scratchlive.net

Sam: Any chance of adding rule 4? Thou shalt not feed the trolls? ;-) Not that I'd ever do something like that....

I think it would do us a lot of good if we had a user moderator that can devote a lot of time on here, not to name any names or anything *cough *cough nik39. I think a lot of problems could be solved.

This is no reflection of my attitudes towards Nik, who I consider as "MVP" atatus here: I don't think having him (or any other "user") as a moderator is a wise idea...unless he was actually put on the payroll and given that as part of the job responsibilities.
Control needs to be with the employees of the two companies, people who can be held accountable for their actions. I've seen other forums devolve into fanboyism, freakish control games and worse when that principle wasn't kept.

FYI - I've moderated a large forum before (as just one of a member of the team) and it takes a LOT of time. We had to provide coverage if one person was out of town or unable to log on.
Just in case you're wondering, the board had over 15,000 members, thousands of them posting daily, and we generated thousands of posts everday - and ALL of them were read and reviewed in a short period of time. BTW, the board had the highest signal to noise ratio of ANY board I've EVER been on. And in case you're wondering it was car based.
All the moderators were unpaid volunteers who were selected from the membership and volunteered their time to the community. I helped moderate the board for nearly 3 years and it was a chore.
All in all, the notifying of the existing moderators works very well provided they can respond quickly. We used a similar method and after a while the users tended to self police - keeping new users and trouble makers in line.

I disagree. I think Serato is absolutely nuts for not making nik a paid employee: Chief Serato Moderator. I'm being very serious. The writing is on the wall.
And to the infamous Mr. Sam:
Please at least send a taunting note that you used my comment for a whole friggin' discussion!
No, I didn't literally mean
I suspect you understand the spirit of the meaning.

I don't think Nik would take the job if we offered it. He has this hang up about remaining independent ;)
Sorry Clark, I didn't want to hijack Niro's thread, so I started a new one.

We all know I'd be a moderator if I could just promote my sites: Breakin-Records.com and Breakin-Forum.com . Since Serato probably wouldn't let me promote them, I couldn't.

Agreed. Keeping an eye on a large forum can be a full time job for a single person. I've run/moderated some others in the past and it's quite life consuming trying to keep up with every single thread.
Being that we don't have a person whose sole job is to keep an eye on the whole forum, we rely on you alerting us to any problems. So if you see something, let us know! Thanks.

This is a silly question. Why hire a full-timer to monitor a measly board when they could hire, say, another programmer?

This is not a "measly board." This board potentially saves un-told $$ for the Tech. Support dept., for the Programming dept. (beta's), etc.

It sure does...what I mean is measly as in I just don't think it's nearly big enough to warrant a full-time employee looking after the boards. The mods do a reasonable job with the traffic as it is, and 99.9% of the people around here play nice 99.9% of the time.
