What quality do i need to export my videos for projection?

Mix Masta Mullet 2:28 PM - 24 July, 2009
im getting videosl next week and am beginning to prepare videos. what kind of quality video will i need to use so when projected it looks good? also, when ive finished making a video and syncing its audio, what kind of quality will it export at? and what is enough so when projected it will look good?
also, if i layer some good quality audio over the video, a 320kbps for example, when exported and compressed into the video, how will the audio quality fair? does it come out high and retain the original quality?

sorry theres a lot of questions there, i just want to know how i should be going about these things so the trial and error process isnt too painful.

peace.

3000 bitrate video
320 bitrate audio.
Sounds just like 320 audio because it is 320 audio.
Don't compress the videos down to 2000 or 2500. I say 2800 minimum.

interlaced? no interlaced? more details will be great :)

no interlace

so if i export the video session at a minimum of 2800 the audio will automatically export at high quality too? or is there usually a separate bit for audio quality in the settings?
djpuma_gemini 9:29 PM - 26 July, 2009
It depends what program you use, but there should be a separate tab for audio. The 2800 will just be for the video quality.

right. im using imovie, i just tried to edit a video and sync audio to it. when i exported i was given a load of screen sizes to choose from, i used a big one and the file was half a gig, looked bad. the video was a hd youtube clip i downloaded, probably not the best. is it the case that you cant really make something much bigger than it originally was?
what resoloution should i be looking to export as, when i have videos high enough quality to do so?
djpuma_gemini 7:21 PM - 27 July, 2009
What you put in cannot exceed what you gets put out (no misquote)
with that being said the file size can grow, but the quality will not. If the youtube clip is only 1000kbps it will still only be 1000kbps or less.

Not sure about imovie in regards to audio.

so you mean although i can make it bigger on screen the quality will deteriorate?

also, when i import into my video software it asks whether to do large 960x540 or full 1920x1080. what should i go for? whichever is closest to my original image?
im just confused, i want what im doing now to ensure the best quality for the clips i have so when blown up on a projector theyll hold ok. theres just so many option and stuff, should i check the quality of the files i use before i edit then follow that? id like to try and enlarge them slightly, is there an amount which is safe before proper distortion?
djpuma_gemini 9:24 PM - 27 July, 2009
Don't blow up the resolution size. Keep it at 720x480 or 640x480. As long as you have a bitrate of at the lowest 2500kbps or higher, they'll look fine on a projector. All of my vids are rendered at 640x480 and look fine on projectors.

That's correct about losing quality, you might only lose a little bit but you can't get more than you put into it. Once the data is gone it cannot be magically put back.

ah thats helpful man. i think im starting to understand, a bit. a lot of the files i get are .avi among otheres which arent supported by imovie or serato. i can easily convert them to mp4, are mp4s ok? do i need to be careful i have the settings right for converting? so many questions!
Mix Masta Mullet 9:56 PM - 27 July, 2009
.. one thing. the encoder i just got which im using to make mp4s asks what i would like my average bitrate and my max bitrate to be. which should i choose? i mean which is good quality for the size res you mentioned without going unnecessarily big and ruining them.
cheers man im nearly there
Mix Masta Mullet 10:03 PM - 27 July, 2009
.. sorry. while encoding these bit rates, what if the original was less than 2500? just go ahead and encode them at 2500? should i set the average to 2500 and the highest to 4200 or something?
sorry i am basically there
