Serato Video General Discussion

Talk about Serato Video and Video-SL.

Has playing videos changed your style???

djbigmark 1:59 PM - 26 June, 2009
I went out last night to the club I play at, to see whats cracking with the other DJ. He plays video every thursday. This dude was playing the videos to the end and then mixing the next video, he seldom did any scrathes. He did not play anything hot or new, it was like watching TV at home.

I have heard him play before doing audio and he is good, It just seems when DJ's play video they play SLOOOOOOW! letting songs play and not being aggressive.

Is this happening to you.
VJ Justin Allen 2:02 PM - 26 June, 2009
Was he using Serato?
djbigmark 2:51 PM - 26 June, 2009
He was using SERATO

My question is has palying vidoes chagned your style?
Chrismo 7:04 PM - 26 June, 2009
I play at least 90% video and I play plenty of stuff that is hot and new. I also take advantage of the opportunity to drag out some oldies that might not have made the playlist were it not for the novelty of the video.
Joshua Carl 7:52 PM - 26 June, 2009
there are definatly songs I wouldnt play if it werent for the video.
One thing Ill say about video, you have a new "read" that you have to implement
into your sets when your surveying your dance floor.

are they gazing at the screen in a trance like state?
or do they not even know, care or too drunk to notice...

Usually my night progresses as such.
9-11,,, ooooooh... look I love this video...wow I love this, lets have a beer.
11-1230.... oooh, I love lady gaga, lets dance....
1230-130 rubble rubble, blah blah blah...
130 - 200 ....heh?
201... The dj was playing videos?

so, depending on what they are doing dictates where I want to go.
djbigboy 5:17 PM - 28 June, 2009
Yeah videos have changed my style. I am working on it tho...
djnak 4:23 AM - 29 June, 2009
Nah didnt change my style just made it better with a way harder search for content...
dj lad 4:59 AM - 29 June, 2009
God damn that is the truth.
dj lad 6:20 AM - 29 June, 2009
Agreed. If anything, doing video has improved my style over the last few years since I have to make sure that the audio cuts are as good as the video cuts.

N thats the way it should be!!!
djbigboy 6:31 PM - 29 June, 2009
I think initially, it would have to have changed most folks style. my audio edits are way different the video edits, and at this point, if I had to wait to make my own video edit to match my fav audio edit, I'd never be playing video...

It should NOT change your style. If it has changed your style then maybe you shouldn't be doing video (unless you had a wack style to begin with lol)

It still could change your style if you don't have 100 % of all videos of the audio you spin with and you do not want to use ambients or visuals.
djchrischip 10:27 PM - 29 June, 2009
ok yes n no...
Please let me explain....

I have been djing for 3 n a half years (almost) doing video for about 1 to 6 months actually deciding to take it to the next level.... (no pun intended.. name of my company lol)

SO here is how it went <this might get long>

I started djing as a mobile dj apprenticing under some ok party djs nothing compared to where I want to be... I learned enough to run bs parties they do...

Started djing...

Met my friend Mike and he showed me serato and what not started doing high priced weddings and sweet 16s... Was getting hugely taken advantage of money wise (too young n dumb to know it back then)... The guy was nice to me but u dont pay ur head dj 100 bucks a gig when u charge between 4 n 6 gs, shouldn't work that way no matter how inexperienced I was...

So i digress after I left him started to perfect my craft so to speak... Started working for another company/ was partner in my own little operation -> nothing ever came of either

Now started doing bars, lounges, and clubs, Started to pick up residencies and do my own thing,

Got into video originally as a toy/ investment for mobile, and to be able to market myself as a video tech to the major private party companies around town... Nothing ever came of this... I never decided to go work for anyone else (at least not steadily, been doing subout work)

MAIN PART

When i started djing I was copying, emulating others to develop a sudo style... Video has exposed me to so much more music and is allowing me to reinvent myself for me... I have been doing it long enough to now be able to be me and am starting to come into the early prime of my career....

Lik if u would have told me at 17 that when i practice i will be playing life is a highway matchbox twenty 3 am, paradise city, and enjoy it I would have told u ur nuts and to go fuck offf lol but now here it is lol

So hope this was well explained enough I mean it was long but just wanted to let it go lol

But anyhow yah video has broadened my musical taste and knowledge and now that I am taking it seriously and much like eloy will start doing exclusively video pretty soon.
djpuma_gemini 10:41 PM - 29 June, 2009
Well put.
djchrischip 10:42 PM - 29 June, 2009
wow i got a lol from sixxx in one thread a well put today i my lucky day lol

im on to something
djpuma_gemini 4:23 AM - 1 July, 2009
Harsh words.

Do u use visuals?
djpuma_gemini 6:59 PM - 1 July, 2009
see what you're saying. Then no, my style is the same. I thought it was mentioned somewhere if your video sets mimic ur audio sets. I thought they meant song for song
Joshua Carl 7:13 PM - 1 July, 2009
yeah... now were getting to style vs content.
Funkytownstopsix 8:25 PM - 1 July, 2009
Chicks get mad if you don't play the videos all the way through on the norm.. Yet I do as I feel I never finish a song unless it's super hot, other than that I make sure to show what SLV can do as well as me. It's an art and hell I don't want to be the guy that when another dj walks in and comes back to the fourms and says that dude sucked..Really you have show to get moo..... If u change your style you are no longer u... Puppet..

You guys have no idea how much that statement is true. Playing videos will change your style, because the customers will be wanting that change.

It's your job as a good DJ to decide when and where to start your next transition.

+100000000

you should let the crowd unknowingly dictate your actions indirectly...
they should NEVER be "telling" you

YOUR in charge.

and thats where the cream rises.
alot of people can tell you what the top 20 songs to drop, but knowing how, when and how much to drop is where "actual" experience comes in.

cant get that on criagslist...yet.

Has playing videos changed your style???

yes, after playing video fro quite some time now i can say it has.
1) i do a lot less turntablism...when i should be doing more.
2) i do not play the same tracks that i used to.
most of the songs i use to play were remixes, dj service mixes and personal edits.
altho, many of the videos i have now are still remixes they just don't have the energy or audio "presence" of the music i used to receive. for instance, the hall and oates "i cant go for that" i have for audio is waaay better than the current video i have. i used to play it all the time. now due to the less hyped video i wouldn't dream of playing it.
3) my files are insanely disorganized.
so i usually just go with whatever is hot rather than a classic.
granted that's not videos fault, it's my own. but it was easier to keep up with when i was only getting a 100 new tracks a month. now i get 100+ videos a week.

it's about to get better.
i have started re-organizing my video folders to mirror my audio drive. in the process i am finding LOTS of songs i use to play that i have videos for a but they are just "blah." as a result i have created a huge list of videos i am going to have to redo. currently i have a 200+ vids to remake and that's with just a few hours of re-organizing.
djhuntah 12:21 AM - 20 July, 2009
mines changed me by time i mix do some effects play around think of next song find next song cue next song beat match the songs nearly finishd the megamix/medleys i used to do i dont do now so ive gone from 200+ songs a night to around 130 but in saying that its only been 3 weeks , the bar i work at is turning more profit and we are busy for longer so i kinda see it as a good thing plus i want to dj more now before i was lookin to finish and now the finish comes to fast so it has changed me for the better at pleaseing the crowd but maybe the djs that come in will say man he used go hard now he just plays videos with effects hes falling off ...so it has pros and cons but im all for it
Joshua Carl 7:06 AM - 20 July, 2009
in most of the places ive been doing the early part of the night you cant really "phone it in"
alot of places Id get in at 9, and from 9-1030 it was just a staggered crowd that happen to find there way into the room... your obviously just playing good shit, not too over the top, solid tracks, but no bombs, and no dudds.
engaging that crowd proved more difficult with just music.
they werent drinking, they are still "catching up"
but with video you can engage them, not as much dancing...
but you can get every head in the room glued to the screen.

so now i plan that part of the night accordingly, where i used to just "wing it" til
1030...or even have an opener
djbigboy 4:28 PM - 20 July, 2009
I can also report that the crowds are more engaged at opening. They come in, grab their drink and stare the the screens. It seems like for the most part, I can get people dancing quicker too....They also seem to notice that the "dj" is doing more then just playing music...

+1

Except they stand on the dance floor and stare until they get the balls to start dancing.
Joshua Carl 5:52 PM - 20 July, 2009
use flash & Rotate effect when you have people staring.
skinnyguy 7:08 PM - 20 July, 2009
flash the crowd while rotating when you have people staring
djbigboy 9:56 PM - 20 July, 2009
i use flash as my standard invidividual effect...It seems to add to the light show (since we don't use strobes) and gets a lil more attention...
Joshua Carl 11:04 PM - 20 July, 2009
thats why im looking forward to getting mix emergency...
so I can use flash & rotate and create minions of devoute followers
with my subliminal messages.

all hail plankton.
Funkytownstopsix 1:09 AM - 21 July, 2009
You want attention use crouching tiger hidden dragon clips and scratch with them over an instrumental.. Works every time
Bren 8:40 AM - 21 July, 2009
It’s inevitable that switching from audio only to video only is going to change your style, well it will to a degree…

The real question is this; has your style changed for better or worse? Video should add to your style providing your focus is on the audio mixing, consider the video as a bonus until you get so advanced you can nail both (I know many here can).

The problem with video is that which everyone knows, the audio portion has not been mastered with nightclubs in mind, so this means a lot of audio replacement/extending/video editing. There are services which do this job for you, but chances are you’ll want to dabble yourself as well. Video presents a new challenge, it requires more time and creativity, providing this is understood your style can only benefit.

Also bear in mind your content library, how many music files did you have before you switched to video? I bet you thousands more, especially in the remix department. The chances are you will not have videos primed and ready for each of these. Your selection will naturally change because your video library is bound to be different.
DJ SABreFEX 5:32 AM - 22 July, 2009
Style hasn't changed one bit!!! It's all in how you used to mix and adding the visuals to the experience. In a club envioronment, the fast mix is needed and still done. Most folks look at the videos when they are sitting down, but if you just add the video feature to your mix, it looks nice. Most folks won't care not unless it's a video they haven't seen.

You also have the option to throw your remixes over the original video BEFORE you mixdown, so what's the fuss?

The only thing with the videos for organizing that I have done is loading them str8 into serato folders and name them with the song, artist, bpm and type ( ie. clean or dirty ).

No changes here!!! I mix like I used to, but when making a recorded Video DVD, I look more at the transitions.
dj vmb 6:03 PM - 22 July, 2009
Not really any changes in music or style, but just an addition to what I used to keep track of. Before video I kept track of music, scratching and effects I had. Now I have music, scratching, effects on audio, and effects for the video. That's sometimes gets time consuming when you’re trying to use different effects every time you mix in another song. I usually don't use different video every time anymore though.

I've always had a battle/scratch mixer, and left the contour precise so I could cut quickly. Now even if you have the contour precise the, cross fader is set at more of a curve when mixing in the video for the grid effect for example.

After seeing many demos of peoples work on the forums I’ve notices most don't use different video effects constantly, but keep using a certain few over and over. I guess it just makes it a lot easier rather than changing it up all the time. I also stopped using so many video effects for my transitions and started to concentrate more on the music again.

What up Funky! Nah, i just work for the TSE, don't live in Toronto though! Nah still haven't had time. All my free time goes into organizing my files and actually dj'n. I usually have to fly to other cities to DJ. Did land a weekly for a bit here but club got closed down. Now just have a monthly out here.
