Why did you abandon VDJ?

After reading over some of the threads on this forum, it soon become apparent that many of you were once Virtual DJ users.
So as someone who has VDJ, I would like to ask why you left VDJ? Were you having stability issues? Was a particular feature missing?
Have you tried Version 6? Is it better or worse?
I’m looking forward to your answers.
Cheers

1. Timecode with SSL is (well at least was) more crisp.
2. Mac support
3. MP4 support
2. Mac support
3. MP4 support

Thanks for the response, I understand that timecode was problematic and not the best, but I've been told this is now very good in version 6.0, although I can't confirm it as I don't use it.
What about Mac and MP4 support? VDJ supports both, you mean it's not very good?
I've never had any trouble playing MP4, VOBs or any format.

No1 issue was STABILITY!!
And I gues 99.9% will answer you the same
Other than that:
- Vista and new laptop graphic cards that didn't have drivers for laptops.
- Vinyl control would strangely disconnect by itself in the middle of mix
And I gues 99.9% will answer you the same

Exactly.
Altho, featurewise is the best by the far mixing and video software.
But fu**k it if you can't rely on it :-/

what he said.
also, Ive always viewed the contraints of VDJ, and how it applies to us...
you really CANNOT be a performance dj/vj.
you can be a mobile, a pub...even a club...but you really cannot perform with it.
its a great tool if you can thwart the stability issue for say a Stripclub, someone who's just gonna load and loosely mix songs.
nothing wrong with that...they are needed too.

i haven't stopped using it. vdj is still setup in my kitchen and it's sweet.
i started using ssl because clubs had serato boxes. using vdj before it supported serato boxes in a club was a nightmare.
also the vdj timecode support was horrible. couldn't be depended on in a real club situation. i hear it's better with vdj 6 though.

I used Serato before I ever tried VDJ.
When I did use it, I liked the ability to use video, but hated using it for audio. I guess I was spoiled by serato already. I even ran it with my serato box and timecodes, but that didn't convince me at all.
After I got the demo for VSL 1.1, I deleted VDJ from my computer and haven't looked back since.

As an owner of both VSL and VDJ, let me just say that I have found VDJ to be plenty stable. One crash in three years of VDJ use, and it was my fault since I used a corrupt video file.
I've never had a timecode problem. Maybe I'm just lucky.

i started djing on virtualDJ and still use it as primary video solution
it has never once crashed on me on its own fault (only once when i removed an external hard drive like a dummy while it was loading stuff, etc.)
serato with VSL on the other hand... use it with a powerhouse macbook pro and it crashes once at least every show. hand is always reaching for that backup record.
admitted, VDJ you have to know what you're doing. it's no plug and play.. but once you get the settings down and its behaviors, the software is so robust, it can do anything your mind can think of

I ran it for 24 hours straight, in fact, as a test. With effects, with new videos loading automatically. No crash. As Kedar says, you can use it effectively you know how to really handle your computer. I do.
Look, it's not an amazing program, but I think it gets a bad rap around here.

VDJ I thought was never really geared towards TCV and turntablism at first. I have noticed along the way they have made some really great moves towards making the TCV more stable and accurate. VDJ 6 i have to say is by far the best release from them and I am very happy with the new accurate tracking. I will say this if you have no experience with computer tweaking or want to take the initial time to set this program up then it will be a big issue with stability. After learning how to adjust and setup the TCV settings I am getting great results. I honestly have never had any issues with crashing but i dont push the Video to its max with alot of video affects.
As far as support well its hard to diagnose a problem with software that supports so many different controllers, mixers, and soundcards. I think when it comes down to it VDJ is on the same level as VSL now besides the initial time to setup everything correctly. *(its NOT plug n play) * trust me VDJ is a pain in the ass to get working perfect but once you do man its a great program

Yeah I had good luck when I was using VDJ with a Macbook Pro and Bootcamp with Windows XP. I am a VIP member there and did a bit of Mac beta testing before it was released but it was to time consuming and never got up to par, pre 6.0.

2:58 PM - 25 June, 2009
my only problem before 6.0 was sticker drift. when i would use anything besides absolute mode, if i would backspin or try to beat juggle the markings on my record would be all off. i got use to just looking at the screen for my cues and it worked great. now with 6.0 beat juggling and TCV is where it should have been. I cant speak much about the Mac version dont have any experience. well its good to see you still support VDJ alot of people i noticed once they switched to VSL they kinda treat VDJ like an ex step child lol its funny to have seen some people talk so highly about VDJ then as soon as VSL was released they jumped ship and look down on it now.

i too have both and use vdj/cue for video. like others said its not so much plug and play as vsl but once you know it and understand the dif settings it works fine. i personally think the image quality is better as well as a few other things. not knocking vsl just prefer a dif solution.

VDJ is great for people who want to use any device other than Turntables (or CDJ's if you swing that way :-/ ) ie. midi devices, triggers, ect...
Timecode (at least with TT's) with SSL is just far superior. (as well as Mac functionality)

Before 6.0? Cause I used it (and beta tested many versions) and it was never on par with SSL.
Decent with CDJ's but not even close with Turntables.

i currently use cue 5.2 but have vdj pro 6 installed and it works fine with both vinyl and cdj use. it took me a second to get it working perfectly but like i said once i did get the settings its been spot on. i do notice a very slight difference from ssl/vsl and cue/vdj with tc but def not like people make it out to be.

I was using 5.2 and been testing out the 6.0 and man the 6.0 is spot on. I no longer am getting the sticker drift when I beat juggle in smart mode. I think VDJ put alot of work into the new timecode. Before the TCV was good but if i had the sticker on my record set at 12 oclock after a couple of backspins it would drift to around 10 but now it is tracking and matches right up with what you see on the screen. I am just glad they are coming around to support turntablist a bit more now.

..exactly correct. When i really want to show off scratch routines and need turntables to accomplish that, i head over to serato. But if i'm looking for a stable mobile show with ease of use and a ton of more features and can use the CDJ coffin, vdj all the way

I think the release is great, anyone who owns VDJ should seriously download the new version! You're missing out if you don't...
I'm glad that so many here can talk positively about VSL and VDJ without feeling threatened by the existence of the other, it just shows that most users aren't children :).

like it was mentioned, and SERATO knows this alot of the users on here (and quite a few were/are VIP on Virtual DJ). Guess its like anything else else, if you you have the correct equipment and know how to tweak your system you can have your system play for you without crashing, this is for both VDJ/SERATO. However thos timecode was biggest issue for alot of users, thats why they came to Serato, like everyone says and know....Its dead on.

Same.
The timecode engine in 6.0 is new, and most aren't experiencing any problems with it.

I can only see using VDJ for non-club sets. Wedding, etc. but ... I still prefer Serato over it anyways. Too many pluses with Serato vs VDJ right now.
main thing... it works right out of the box. No janky configurations or being a computer expert to get it running right. I was able to use my computer experience, hammering the forums, and being a VIP member there to get a system running right for several years. It wasn't until they pretty much had ignored any of my input regarding ANY improvements regarding club dj use. There focus was on controller support and automation. Serato finally released the video plug in and within a few short months made it stable enough for live DJ use. I made the complete switch back in late last year. But I had bought a MAC early last year to be ready for it.
Never looked back since.
I would use VDJ right now for nothing serious or club dj programming at all. I would use it to make a playlist and hit play and walk away from the machine.... because you can.
