Akai APC 40

VJ Justin Allen 1:04 AM - 21 June, 2009
Is anyone using the APC-40 as a controller for Serato?
asthmatic 3:49 AM - 21 June, 2009
i want to know too, i was planning on buying them on sunday.
VJ Justin Allen 3:58 AM - 21 June, 2009
I have been doing some research on it and I don;t think it is the best piece of gear for Serato. First off, it really is linked hard to Ableton. There are a lot of software issues as well and for that you need a Akai program called Max for Live in order to be able to do any type of custom programming. And the final kicker is that because this is a branded for Ableton piece, they have said that they will not be making any other templates for other software.

I think you can use this for Serato, but you will really lose a lot of functionality, and for the price, it's just doesn't seem worth it.

I am actually looking at the Akai MPD 32 controller as an alternative.

It's a shame, because the APC-40 is a cool looking machine.
asthmatic 4:45 AM - 21 June, 2009
I just got live and thought that this controller would be cool if they worked together.
VJ Justin Allen 12:19 PM - 21 June, 2009
It's 100% made for live. I would buy it in second if I used live.
Anu 2:59 PM - 21 June, 2009
Got to demo one for a day it will work with serato ......cycling 74 makes max it does all sorts of midi tricks ...but u don't need it to use apc wit serato...not as big of a unit i though it was....if u have live u should get it the work flow is fast ....

max for live is not a akai software............... is the future now......... (well from the 23rd of noveber 2009).............

max for live is Max (from cycling74) inside ableton........
with both version you are able to make your own synth, midi devices, effects etc. etc. (as long as you know what you are doin')......

have fun...... serato does it better........ love from roma!!!!!!
Evil_banana 3:13 PM - 7 November, 2009
How about the Novation Launchpad? Unfortunately it does not have any knobs and faders, but it has a whole lot more pads/buttons and much smaller footprint (and REALLY lower price)
DJ'Que 5:07 PM - 7 November, 2009
just get the denon dn-hc1000s. That piece is so wicked. I sold my mpd24 and got it.
Axialism 6:31 PM - 7 November, 2009
Why use it for serato when it's so much better for ableton?
DJ Latino 8:15 PM - 7 November, 2009
I use it for Serato and Ableton it works for both real good. And maybe in the future (NAMM2010) I will be able to do much more with it :-)
Audiosmith 9:19 AM - 21 November, 2009
I just tried mapping my APC40 to serato for the first time tonight and had no issues.

The 8x5 button array sends MIDI notes by default anyway, as do the stop clip buttons so mapping them to loops, looprolls, cues and play toggle button etc. was no problem at all.

Very low latency also, especially compared Live where the buttons aren't responsive enough to use them to play samples like you would an MPC.

I couldn't get the APC's faders and rotary knobs to assign to anything however, but my MPK49's worked no problem so something odd's going on with them.

All in all it works great with serato if all you need are trigger buttons, and means I don't need to go out and buy an MPD32 especially!
shakee 2:13 AM - 7 January, 2010
my gf just got me the APC40 for Christmas.

I was able to assign everything including the knobs and faders.

I'm using Video SL... So I assigned the APC40's fader to fade the video. Now I have separate faders for audio and video.
VJ Justin Allen 2:24 AM - 7 January, 2010
Were you able to get the lights working as well?
shakee 2:39 AM - 7 January, 2010
the lights on the buttons? I'll check again when I get home, but I don't think so. The buttons work, but I believe the colored lights turning off and on are tied into Ableton.

I did use the knobs to adjust the auto loop/loop roll count.

I also have a knob assigned to change the transition effect for the videos, but that one acts a little funny. Had a problem assigning to my M-Audio keyboard too. It works, but you just have to move it really slowly.

I'm going to wait and see what Rane comes up with next week.
Hopefully, they'll have a new mixer that integrates SSL with Abelton Live nicely.
shakee 9:54 PM - 7 January, 2010
Thanks!! I'm gonna try that as soon as I get home from the day job!!.
shakee 9:55 PM - 7 January, 2010
oh yeah and the lights don't turn on.
VJ Justin Allen 11:27 PM - 7 January, 2010
I didn't think they would. I am not sure but I think the developers need to program that ability.
VJ Justin Allen 11:28 PM - 7 January, 2010
Maybe we'll see the APC-40-SL appear at NAMM!
Winfried S. 11:37 PM - 29 October, 2010
I am using the Akai Apc40 for ssl and it works amazing, It isnt possible to control the lights through serato cause it has not have a midi output.

Apparently there is a program from bome which can control the lights next to sll.
Anyone any experience how to program it?
VJ Justin Allen 11:51 PM - 29 October, 2010
Look at Konix's posts on the Traktor X1 programming
Winfried S. 12:10 AM - 30 October, 2010
Cheers, But all this i knew.

I want to program the lights. this is not possible in serato and you need an other program for that, like MT at bome.com i just not understand how to use it and was wondered if anyone have experience with mapping / programing in Bome
VJ Justin Allen 2:54 PM - 30 October, 2010
Winfried

Start a new thread with "Bome programming help needed" as the title of it. You will get more (and better) responses there I believe.

Hi, sorry for my bad English which is not my maternal language.

I tried koonix method in order to make light work: serato.com

APC is recognize by MIDI device connection center, I configure it as explained but it doesn't work...

Does anybody allready tried is method with an APC. Did you manage to make light work?
thebuttonfreak 5:20 PM - 25 January, 2011
I've been using an APC40 as a controller for over a year now and it's the best setup I've ever had. The lights don't work but other than that it's amazing.
dounounba 11:53 PM - 1 February, 2011
You mean it's totaly impossible to make lights work?
DJ4LMNTZ 10:03 PM - 24 June, 2011
Bumping this.

I've been using the APC40 mapped out with Serato SL1 for about 5 months now and it works perfectly. It IS however way better to use with Ableton but it still works well with Serato. You can even use the MIDI and CDJs/Turntable/Controllers for a bigger and better set up.

I mapped it out down the middle so the left side is left turntable, right is right, etc. Hot Cues in middle, then Loops on others, with play/reverse, and beat effects beat ratio too.

The sliders are pitch adjust and nudge, and the knobs mapped out perfectly for effect selection/intensity, and for loop roll and loop selection too.
DJ MDX 1:41 AM - 25 June, 2011
Can anyone using this link us to a video of it in action - it doesn't have to be a performance but just to see everything you've done with it in more detail....then show off if you want...lol

I agree looked awesome - wish the video would have been shot in landscape so we could get more of a wider view but still informative for what it was - nice find!
Brad Thrashin 9:03 PM - 20 August, 2011
Can anyone help breakdown what he did to get the lights working like that? I know you download the script from remotescripts.blogspot.com and tweak some of the code then put it into a folder for ableton but I cant figure out what/where in script to change and what he mentions "having 4 audio and 4 return tracks in ableton thats it." to accomplish this I dont know how to set up.

He mentions going to his site but there's nothing helpful there. Thanks to anyone who can help!
R3D12 6:00 AM - 26 October, 2011
I've figured out how to set up the LEDs on an APC40 to control SSL, using the APC 64-40 script. It's really great!

If you like, let me know how you want the lights to be lit (green/flashing green/red/flashing red/yellow/flashing yellow), and I'll customize a script for you, and write up a tutorial on how to get it working.
thebuttonfreak 3:46 PM - 26 October, 2011
I would love to do this. Is there any way you can help me? I've been using an apc40 without anything else for a few years now and all I'm missing is the lights.

Sure, just let me know the layout on the clip launcher grid that you would like.
Just an FYI, the lights on the grid won't react to pressed/activated, they will either be solid or flashing. However, the knobs will display their position with the LEDs.
thebuttonfreak 7:43 PM - 26 October, 2011
I know, and the lights on the knobs work regardless. But it would still be nice to have a the lights on.

Okay, here's the link to download your configuration:
www.mediafire.com
(the Clip Stop row can only be green, there are no red LEDs. I made them light green for you.)

To install:
Unzip the folder.
Place "APC_64_40" folder in your Ableton's MIDI Remote Scripts directory.
Mac OS X: /Applications/Live 8.x OS X/Live.app/Contents/App-Resources/MIDI Remote Scripts/APC_64_40
PC: C:\Program Files\Ableton\Live 8.x\Resources\MIDI Remote Scripts\APC_64_40

Open a new Ableton Live set, and create four Audio/MIDI tracks and four Return tracks.
Open your Ableton Live preferences, and select the MIDI/Sync tab.
For Control Surface, select "APC 64 40".
The Input and Output should be your APC 40.
Make sure Remote is selected, and that Takeover mode is selected.

Open Scratch Live.
On your APC40, press Shift+Track Selection 8.
Your lights should be properly configured!
thebuttonfreak 1:10 AM - 5 November, 2011
Thanks for this R3D12
thebuttonfreak 1:19 AM - 5 November, 2011
man you rule. This just totally worked!
Brad Thrashin 12:51 AM - 7 November, 2011
Holy crap. I just saw this. Can I draw you a template for what i want? Man I have been using it without lights for months now!

I came across the Bomes translator not long ago but started going a different direction by that point. I think with it you can get the lights to react. Come to think of it I should revisit that.
Jonas Polin 11:54 PM - 25 January, 2012
hye, can you do the same with an Akai APC20? with lights, it would be even better!
DJ4LMNTZ 12:03 AM - 26 January, 2012
You can always add a Novation Launchpad to your set-up and use it as an equalizer, mixer, panning, effects, live production keyboard/drumpad, and such while having your APC40 running too
Jonas Polin 11:28 AM - 26 January, 2012
No I mean, R3D12 has succeeded to map the Akai APC40 to Serato with working leds, or am I wrong?

I have just recieved my Akai APC20, and I used it with Ableton, but also with Serato SL1. Now I was wondering if you could let the leds also work. Just like R3D12 did with his APC40?
Cuervo 1:42 PM - 28 January, 2012
So can I use the APC 40 to control the effects, sampler player, pitch bend, cue point and loops with Serato SL (TTM57)?
If i buy the APC 40 can see the beat greads bars when I am using it with Serato SL or I need to buy the full version of Ableton Live?
Thanks for your help guys.

Is there a way to map the job wheel to a macro? for the scratch effect?
Chojnacki 6:27 PM - 1 April, 2012
Okay everyone, I'm almost there. remotescripts.blogspot.com is an awesome site and I downloaded his AP64_40 script which is a custom midi device script. Instrustions are as follows

To install:
Unzip the folder.
Place "APC_64_40" folder in your Ableton's MIDI Remote Scripts directory.
Mac OS X: /Applications/Live 8.x OS X/Live.app/Contents/App-Resources/MIDI Remote Scripts/APC_64_40
PC: C:\Program Files\Ableton\Live 8.x\Resources\MIDI Remote Scripts\APC_64_40

The problem I'm running into is that Serato no longer recognizes my APC40 when I have APC64 40 selected in my Ableton MIDI preferences as my control surface. In Serato, under the Setup/Midi tab, its says ACP40 is my control surface. I think this is where Serato is getting confused. I'm thinking i either have to get some kind of custom script for serato? Or is this where Bomes Midi Translator comes in? Any help would be greatly appreciated
William Kourken 9:15 AM - 10 October, 2012
Hy guys!
I have the same problem you have Chojnacki with the recognition of my APC40 by Serato when using APC_64_40 script...
Did you find the solution?
Would be great! thanks

Anyone know any programs to use to keep any of the lights constant while using it with Serato? The 8 by 5 grid doesn't light up due to hardwiring but I'm trying to send a signal through since the middle 2 columns of 5 buttons are my hot cues for left/right decks. I'd like to keep them constantly red if possible

^I would think having the APC40 on the same table as turntables in a set up would take up far too much room since it's just a giant MIDI essentially.

Have you checked out the Akai LPD8? Has just the proper amount of bells and whistles on it for hot cues, effects triggering, and dry wets (knob mapping effects that is)

Im trying to find a more creativevuse for it than that, more forbsomething like ableton less of an fx trigger

I'm in the same boat, had my APC for nearly 2 years and it's not getting much use. I've just got a new mac, so I'm not giving myself excuses now. I've bought a crane stand, so I'll have my laptop to the side and my APC on the stand (I think), can't think of a better option.
