Is there a way to get the video preview windows to be bigger (al la Mix Emergency) ?

There is a way but it involves using extra screens.
Way to do it:
* Connect the output of your computer to a Matrox TripleHead box.
* Connect the left and right vga outs to seperate LCD screens
* Connect the middle out to the main system as you would normally
* In VSL setup choose 'left-output-right' in the arrangement
* Fullscreen on your 'second' (really 3 different) monitors.

I'll play with that. I was looking at the matrox boxes and was going to get the dual head vs the triple head.
Does this work just using the dual head one, using left-right setup?

ah - yes. but then you will need an external video mixer to create the output yourself (and will lose the transitions / control of the crossfader)

Ah, I see. You know you could just allow the video window to "detach" :)
or perhaps you could use the entire space. There seems to be extra space on the right of the preview windows on my 17" laptop. Or maybe allow resizing.
In any event, thanks.

ah sorry, i misunderstood your question, Justin.
what Nathan said is exactly what i do at one of the places i play.
i set up to one of those 3 screen monitors. it's a ridiculous with all the adapters but it works.

No problem tomatoslice. I am already moving in the direction of additional monitors. I have been using 15" monitors with my DVJ's and wanted to keep it down to 2 of them instead of 3 of them :)

SO I have been doing some research into the Matrox units and they (Matrox) have now taken the new (mid 2009) Macbook Pros off of their compatibility list. It seems that there is an issue with the output using the Apple branded Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter. It seems to limit the resolution output.
I looked into the other 2 companies making adapters for the Mini DisplayPort and Monoprice was one of them. I sent them some questions and received some answers (see below).
The good news is that they say their Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter does not have this issue. The bad news is that they have no plans to make a Mini DisplayPort to S-Video adapter. As they are one of the major manufactures for after-market cables this does not bode well for those of us looking for component/composite output without adapters.
Just FYI
My Questions:
I have 2 questions both dealing with the latest (mid 2009) Apple Macbook Pro Mini DisplayPorts
1) There are reports that when using the Matrox Triplehead2go that the Apple minidisplayport to VGA adapter does not allow full resolution. Matrox states that this has to do with the way Apple made their converter.
Does yours have the same issues?
2) Do you have plans for a Mini displayport to S-video adapter?
Thank you for your time
Their Answers:
Hello Mr. Allen
In regards to your question, what were they considering to be full resolution because our mini dp to vga adpater has had no trouble displaying 1080p and vga is known to go beyond that as well. It can also vary per the source itself and the display is able to accept. Unfortunately not at this time we are going to be carrying a mini display port to s video, I do apologize for any inconvenience.
Should you have any further questions, please feel free to email us.
We appreciate your business.
Sincerely,

More news, just in time for my new system.
Matrox has announced that their Dualhead2go and triple head2go adapters have been upgraded to work with the new Apple mini DisplayPort outputs. And that VGA, and DVI outputs will be supported as well with adapter cables.
The only downside I have seen is that it uses USB for power, which creates an issues on the newer 15" systems as they only have 2 USB outputs. One for Serato, one for midi...opps I am out of outputs.
Here are the links, they should be released withing the next few weeks.

Opps, just read the rest of the list and missed it the first time. It has an optional power supply you can buy. Sweet! Problem solved.
