Macbook pro, Pre Unibody Defect.

I just wanted to let you guys know (I'm a sure a few of you already know) about the defect in the Pre Unibody Macbook Pros with the 8600GT video card.

So, if you're looking for one, be careful and good luck. I still think the internal digital to analogue conversion was really good and maybe worth buying a refurbished one from the apple store. But, it seems like all of the 8600 cards are defective and there's some lawsuits going on now.

yeah, this is old news, but it's a good thing that they extended the warranty. i think puma's card went out and his was replaced pretty quickly.

I have a 2.4 17" with that card in it and they replaced it within 24 hours. And they did extend the warranty period.

Just wanted to let some people know, since it seems all of the 8600 cards are defective after a certain period and not just the ones mentioned on the apple website.

Hey Justin, was your MBP defective when you brought it in? Or did they replaced it even though the laptop was working fine?

Greetz,

It turned defective over time. One day it started have funky lines on the screen. Called them up, they send a shipping box to me and I had it back the day after that.

Oh ok, does anyone knows if apple replaces them even when their still working? As a matter of prevention...

I'm about to take mine in. One of the signs is the video card thinking there is a vga display connected when there isn't. Works fine when there is another monitor, but when there isn't a bunch of windows end up on the part of the desktop I can't see.

I'll take it to the local repair shop and they should fix within a day. Same day, if I tell them to order the parts in advance.

That's correct. I didn't get applecare (first time ever), but luckily you have 2 years from date of purchase as an extra video card warranty. Mine went out 1.5 years after I got it so luckily apple replaced the entire logic board free of charge.

I had no warning signs. I just turned it on one day and no screen. For those of you who have this mac, setup up screen share so if it does go out you can easily connect to it from another mac connected to your lan and backup your files, without having to plug it into a mac with a firewire cable and access it that way.
I was able to "clean up" my files before taking it to apple and also create a backup of my music, just in case they f'd my shit up.

Then two weeks later my mac pro's video card went out, luckily I have apple care on that and it was replaced in a few days free of charge as well.

The laptop took about 3 days to get it done.
