hey guys,
I have a Macbook Pro (early 08 model) 2.6 ghz, 4 gb ram.
I currently use a 2 tb western digital external hd for audio (approximately 1 tb full)
and a 1 tb wd external for video ( approx 790 gbs)
just wondering if anyone had a suggestions for a duplicate finder.
Here is the idea i would like to do:
With a drive set up (either audio or video) run a program <the duplicate finder> that will search for (byte by byte) duplicates that have the same identical time (legnth of mp3 or mp4) AND then take one of those and export them to a blank hd... (ie copy n paste)
Any body have any ideas, suggestions, etc.
I did use the search to no help... (much props to rane for making it faster than its predessor -> ya i spelled that wrong.
Much Thanks to any help any1 could provide

just need to give it sometime.
most people in here have probably not read this and/or know of no program yet that does what you are asking.
definitely if you want a response, slightly, faster "help" is where you want to post.

if it goes by file name or tag info, the tracks might not be labeled the same.
like
flo rida - low.mp4
flo rida ft t-pain - low.mp4
flo rida - get low.mp4

thats y u get one that searches byte by byte is the term i think...
"that will search for (byte by byte) duplicates that have the same identical time (legnth of mp3 or mp4) "
i am not too familiar with this but there are duplicate searchers that dont just look by file name.

still every once in a while I just search by artist then type in the first few letters of the track name and see how many versions i have of the same song/video.
takes time, but you should only have to do it once.

I found a program called tidy up
I would like to purchase 2 new external hard drives
On the first copy all my videos and songs (in original song structure)
keep the second blank.
Have "tidy up program" analyze first external and report to me where the doubles are. Then copy and paste the original (fancy name for 1 version of the song) onto the new external.
I do not want the first external touched, deleted from etc. <im going to use it as back up>
I looked in the manual but didn't quite get the procedure on how to use the program to accomplish this, so basically I have 3 questions:
1 when I go through the original hard drives the program will scan and find all doubles n duplicates based on a byte by byte file analysis or just based on file name <2 songs with different versions can have same filename, n be same legnth. {ex i have just dance and just dance accapella out-> would have same filename n basically identica characteristics, n one would be accapella out -> dont want it to be deleted?
2 once the program finds a duplicate. What does it do. Does it take automatic action or does it scan the whole thing and then report it back to the user and ask what action to take.
3 say I want to copy original file to another external hard drive and leave the both original and duplicates on the original hard drive that was scanned is this possible. If so please can u break it down for me I am having a bit of difficulty understanding the manual.
link to tidy up for those interested.

What I do is use scratchlive then click on artist or song and make the screen smaller open up the drive an look at the location to confirm that its a duplicate I even play them to be sure I get the best one, then I delete the ones I don't need. With Scratchlive you could do it by artist first then by name of song,,, you could take it another step by typing the name to be sure you got all off that song. Very quick and cheap way to find your duplicate files

ok so now having given up on the tech support at tidy up v2...
I researched and found dupin an itunes duplicate finder.
So Now I am in the process of copy n pasting two hds onto my spare 2tb external,
I will then add them as a separate library into itunes,
After this I will use the program to find doubles, and do its thing"
However first I am waiting on an email back on two questions I have for them.
1. I want the program to search by all criterias it currently does and also, by file name...(not sure if that is possible though)
2. I want to know if it also does a byte by byte analysis to make sure they are exact doubles n not different versions.
