Hello people, I have this question in my mind that's been bugging me.
What is VJing?
As the new video mixing era has started, a lot of DJ's are changing their title to VJ's.
But the traditional term VJ applies to an entirely different breed of artists. I don't know much about them but they don't beatmatch with headphones but work with 20 layers of videos etc.
Just a quick visit at vjforums.com shows a mixed level of acceptance towards Video-SL and other similar products. Some welcome the idea but some seem a little against it as they believe this kinda threatens the pure art of VJing.
So yeah, I mean is this about to change? What is a video mixing DJ to call themselves to separate himself/herself from the rest? VJ? DVJ? I need your opinions! :)

Well, what we call a DJ is not traditionally what a DJ was/is either.
A DJ originally was the guy on the radio talking on the mic and playing songs in between.... not mixing and scratching and such.
A term can describe a wide range a things... like "Producer" a person can be called a producer and that can mean many things... someone can produce a play and that is different from a music producer. People try to nit pick too much and break everything down to the very least thing possible to try and seperate it from anything close to it to try and make it more special and elite than it really is.... just like when the term "Turntablist came about. Al the sudden no one wanted to be called a DJ any more.. like it was not good enough to be a DJ (even though 90% of them have no idea what it really is to be a turntablist) If you DJ using video, I don't see why you can't logically be called a VJ.... or a DVJ. It may be on the low scale or the least of what a VJ can be (just like being a radio personally/DJ is the least thing a DJ can be but they are still a DJ to some degree) but it is still VJing.

lol... thanks for your thoughts... from the video that I watched (above link), there is a quote that I really liked which was something to the effect of 'vjing is an art that's transforming too rapidly to be defined as one thing'.
Well I think, at least with the recent advances different media arts are emerging and at the same time, merging. Whether you're a fully commercial performer or a pure artist, multimedia is changing right now. It's like no one really knew what ArKaos was 10 years ago (even though it existed), I just really hope Serato Video-SL will live up to its name while keeping up with the latest visual technologies, it's definitely a serious program and a serious threat, whichever way you see it.

I think it does and will continue to live up to it's name... it's up the the end user to push the limits of the product and use it to it's fullest capacity... it's easy to just do the least amount of work and not be creative and think outside the box and really dig in deep to a product.... most people don't push Scratch Live anywhere near it's potential. I know people who have used it for yrs and don't ever look at the set up screen or have any idea about calibrating the soft ware (something you should learn from day 1) The product is good.... it's on to us to show HOW good.
