Just curious.
probably like alot of you, but not all im sure at one point just spun music.
now, i have only been doing videos for a year now, but the 15+ years preceeding that I made money as a solid party/club DJ...
you know, local name weight... but nothing that doesent dissapate a few states away.
so, ive encountered in person, and more so in wonderful forums like this the:
VIDEO HATER.
here are some key phrases:
*its just a gimmick
*its a fad
*no one cares about the video, its the music.
*videos have no buisiness in the club
*VJs just do videos because they suck at music
*I can do a music set thats 100X hotter than any video set
so, what flavor has your haterade been?

yea, i had one. it was a club manager, he said "i'm just not that impressed with video,so we're not doing it."
me - "you have no clue!! do you?"
a few months later i am doing video, he's no longer the manager and the club is hitting record sales.

Mills hit it on the head! club owners are harder to grasp the importance of video in a club. in another post i stated how i had to set up a temp screen and projector just to prove my point with a big screen. since i have been doing video in my sat gig there numbers have gone up and up. the first week we did it i used there 40" lcd and EVERYONES eyes were GLUED to the screen. men, women, wall flowers, freaks on the dance floor you name it they watched it. plus when i have my scrolling banner on the bottom of the screen with book me here, text requests, take care of bartenders, etc. it gets into your head wether you realize it or not. my logo it stays on the top corner of the screen ALL NIGHT LONG! marketing and branding at its best. they stair at the screen for hours so a week or two later when they see my logo somewhere they think of yeah the DJ rocking videos.
i too kept putting it off and putting it off but then a new club i was about to start had 70 screens and wanted some video clips. so i maned up and got into video and all i can say is, why did i wait this long! i have been dj'ing for 14 years and do not have a "day job" video has def made me excited again about my profession. i can mix with my eyes and ears closed so now i can focus on the visual side fo the party.

I guess I should have mentioned, its usually from NON video djs.
(matter o fact, in that whole VDJ 6 thread there was a bunch of guys bashing video)
every club owner Ive encountered loves the idea, but unless I really jumped through som hoops, the rooms arent really set up for video.
clueless managers are really the bane of my existence.
Synyster, are you using mix emergency for those effects?
I cant find anything that'll run on PC that'll do that shit

a few months later i am doing video, he's no longer the manager and the club is hitting record sales.
Ya man I feel you on that..... I was VJ/djing a this club in NYC on wednesday the party was crazy. The club had 4 - DL.2 Digital Light. If you don't know what a DL.2 Digital Light is it's a $35,000 projector that can send video any were in a club 360 degrees, they are crazy and made by High End Systems. Anyway the manager was like "We never used them lights befor like this, we only use them for logos." In my mind I was like what a waste of money! The video system they had was over $150,000. When I was talking to him about doing video in the place he was like it would kill the vibbe in the room. O ya they also play movies on the system when there is only a dj there. That was the sicks video system I seen in New York City. I'll put up some pic and video if you want to see it... But it was wack that they did not even want to try it out.

same thing happened at webster hall. they had a video dj in the big room with a HUGE screen behind the dj. after a month they stopped the video and hired a regular dj. imo webster hall is a perfect place for video but i guess they think not.

RIGHT..?
a while ago I started a thread, "how much do your vj sets mirror your audio sets"
I started that becuase I felt like maybe I was missing a "video" element to my video sets.
musically I do the same trickery that I might do with music, becuase like said, thats REALLY the big push, if the video skips, or for whatever reason goes off the dancefloor wont react, but if the beats are hot, and your mixes are tight the floor will respond accordingly...
So, here I was wondering what visual element do I need to perfect?
I swap through transitions, pop in effects when they look good.
but like every other night Ive done for the past 15 years Im putting stock in the music...
this is what I think NON video guys are speculating.
that we threw mixing out the window and are just throwing videos at the crowd.
but here in this city, its mostly ignorance. (Boston)
the videos that are done here are almost always off this abortion of a program called DJPOWER. which for whatever reason is installed in every room in the city.
pre-loaded with 200gb of 15mb videos that look & sound like ass.
So, no one here has really seen a well programmed and quality video set.
even owners & managers.
theres now about 20 rooms in the city that have 30+ LCDs all over..
whats on em?
Sportscenter, the News, random sports games...
I say, ya know you guys might wanna try a video night with all these screens...
I usually get the "tap dance"
errr...welll.... we have promoters who bring in DJ sass-a-frass to play the same beats
every week, bla bla bla....
(yes, I know its my fault for not putting together a dvd for these people yet
to show em...I dont exepct to walk in and say "vj" and places to re-arrange their nights)
but, I digest...

You know what I noticed, when I do video sets downstairs at my club during dinner, I focus more on the transitions and look of my set but when I spin videos at the club and people are dancing, all that shit seems to go out the window and I usually keep it on one transition and forget that I'm even playing videos. Hell last time I even minimized the VSL window and just rocked it like regular audio. I think that's the best way to do it. I started at a club where there was no video at all. The main Dj here used to make fun of me for doing video normal reasons No one even notices blah blah blah. Well over time the owner said he wanted to start doing video all the time and now i have his job and he still doesn't do video. I think video is just another part of the experience. It doesn't take away from the music it adds to it. There are alot of older Djs in my city (peoria, IL) that still come in and hate on it 1. bc i'm 22 and booked 5 days a week 2. bc they can't do it. I think its funny when i'm spinnin and i see them at the bar watching the video lol.

last time I checked, clubs made most of their money from people that are drinking at the bar who obviously aren't dancing at that particular time.
anyways, that's just one story of mine

If you are doing a club set - I agree. IT would be not so easy (unless you have everything pre-planned) to make quick transition, juggles etc *and* taking care about the visual aspect. For me it would take the fun out if my whole set was pre-planned.
Yes, The audio should *always* come first.

thats something I dont think everyone understands yet outside of the DJ realm.
aside from the Pioneer, which is usually way too expensive for most mid sized venues... they have really not seen a CV controlled video set...and if they have, chances are it wasnt all to impressive.

When I see someone using a BS controller and VDJ I hate, I'm not going to lie. I've hated on quite a few video video guys...Sorry but I think most people who use turntables despise button pushing DJ's whether video or not. Before V-SL the video game was DVJ or VDJ (yes I know there are a few others but those are the better of the bunch.) DVJ's are quite expensive so odds are if you used those you were pretty advanced, most DJ's can not afford a 3,500 dollar machine if they are whack.
Now that Serato has opened the floodgates for video in the US a lot of people are getting involved in video who grew up a wavies, maybe they are not now but they grew into DJing downloading a few limewire tracks and moving into a low paying gig. Maybe now they learned how to mix and where to get great music but the have NO IDEA about video. No idea where to get content...No idea what encoding is...How to organize...How to edit...ect. So essentially you can have a pretty good DJ that has shit content and gets a hate from me..haha

Has a bar/club manager ever said to you "So if you're going to play videos, why shouldn't I just put MTV on?"
Apparently that's a common response when trying to sell video to a venue (although I've not heard it myself).
My answer to that would be: Well Turn MTV on, turn the brightness on your screens right down so you can just see darkness, now you have a DJ.

i use CUE/VDJ for video and it has logo overlay as well as a scrolling text feature built in to the software. i have found it to be a very stable solution for video mixing. good features and once its set up right works like a champ with tc cd and tc vinyl. i use it with a korg zero4 using the korgs sound card and sounds great.
