How many of you VSLers are editing your own videos? Go ahead and feel free to guess a percentage of the users that are editing their own videos.
Do you feel like you spend an inordinate amount of time editing? How much time do you spend on each video (if theres an average time)?
And how many people just download the videos from whatever source and are just go to go?
I understand that editing your own videos adds your personal touch, i just want to get a grasp on the whole time involved.
Anyone making money off their videos (ie crooklyn clan, strictly hits, other)?

to answer you questions in order you asked:
- I do (so if you are counting start with 1)
- It is a lot of time but worth every minute, hour, day spent on an edit
- there is no average time.. depends on the project
- I do get videos from sources and just go.. but I do edit too
- not making a living off my videos edits or remixes

Thanks for the response. I guess you couldn't make a living, but perhaps supplement your income. I heard about your gold digger edit, is that available on youtube to check out?
Thanks for the response...a while back when I first got serato I thought I'd be doing video, I tried editing, its a major pain...it seems some complicated when reading all the posts, not to mention intimidating.

i have created and edited a few videos but that's just for tracks or remixes that i do not have vids for.
only on certain videos do i feel like i spend a lot, maybe an hour or 3, but that's just because i don't have it down yet.
i primarily just dload, organize and am good to go.
not making a living off video edits or remixes but then again not trying.
i do make a living off djing/vjing.

Phat-AL I see H-Town flavor in the mix,,, no Ghetto Boyz though and I know u play Ghetto Boyz........make me want to edit some of my shit I like how you have song full song go to instrumental makes for tight mixing. Yet since your doing it I will just watch yours and save my time... Love the site. Now I have to work on mine. If someone was to tell me one day you would be a web designer, no longer carry records, load songs as fast as you could blink and be an video editor,,,,, I would have slapped them silly... DAMN!!!!We do that and more,,, my how times have changed.
good job on editing I tried it and it looks easy but when you see stuff like gold digger and try to do it man it takes a lot of time you have find videos then speed up and slow stuff down cut paste bump it i quit.

Gold Diggers was a chore... he was singing it at a different tempo live and to find all the key parts when he sang it too. Took a bit just to do it but I was happy with the results.
btw... I did play the Getto Boyz this past Friday at my gig at Eye Candy.... my mind is playing tricks on me.. old school H-Town !! gotta love it!

I'd say half the videos I play on a given night are edits of some kind.
DJ Kidd Insomnia

I'd agree. Most of the videos that I play are edited by myself. Most of my edits are
extends and remixes. Extends don't take too long but a remix can't take a while to edit.

In order:
1.) Yes i edit my own videos
2.) I guess the percentage of video DJs who edit their own videos is 100%, to what degree is another topic
3.) Inordinate amount of time? I feel like there is no way to be a good vdj AND have a day job. that's how much time this requires.
4.) I do not download videos and just go. There are only two options, play the promo only version or my own edit. No in -between. The exception would be screenplay.
5.) No one is making money from their video edits, at least not enough that I would consider it "real" money, except for maybe the guys running the sites that sell the videos. Profile is a HUGE part of this equation. A high profile editor making a lot of money with illegal edits would cause a scene. Keeping a low profile keeps the lawyers off you. I've found a way to sell videos with no legal hassles though. Pretty sure I'm the first one to think of this.

Haha,
How about you pay me 100 for each edit of mine and I'll pay you 100 for each edit of yours.
10 edits equals 1000 dollas.
I'm rich bitch.

Considering the the nature of the business (music), I don't see how a wall of speakers could be ripping off of anybody.
I'm really curious, how do you get it to bump to the beat? qtz?

A python script analyzed the audio file and provided raw data to drive the x axis of the speaker cone 25 times per second. The 25 fps rendered stills are combined into a movie file. You won't get varied and realistic shadows, reflections and specular highlights like that with QTZ.

I think you've taken it a step too far... It is possible to have a day job as well as be a good VDJ, but if you add a woman into that mix then one will have to give...
I work 9 hours a day and then I get home and the real work begins, trying to balance the editing work and my relationship with my wife, it's not easy. If I was single it would be easy but that's not life!

Congrats,,, DJBIGBOY... I remember when I first got my video up and running,,I felt like a kid.. Then I was like damn I don't have enough videos. LOL...I had a lot too still seems as I don't have enough. That same night I had my wife and her friends come upstairs and see it on the projector they were in ahhhhaw,,,This was a big deal as my wife don't get excited about anything but spending money on shoes,,,,that's when I knew I made a good investment. So I feel you on the inspiration.. Oh and one of the guys that came up does video commercials for a lot of the local business he uses Final Cut he too was in Awwwwhhhh I couldn't get him to leave me along asking about how in the hell am I doing this on the fly without editing.....Once again Inspiration.

when i first heard about SSL, the thing that got me most hyped and keen was the ability to play out my own edits/remixes/tracks.... this now goes for video now too. Pretty much 95% of what i use in shows has been edited myself... been filming stuff too which adds to the individual style of the show. If you've not tried it... do. start with something simple like imovie/hyper av and if you then get into it and feel restricted then get FCP or Vegas... editing is so much fun and you can add more dimensions to your blends bringing in narative threads and examples of your influences.

Damn youtube can't see it from work will check it when i get home or on my New Palm Pre at lunch. I did a few things last weekend that worked pretty good I used a few clips from the five heatbeats & 300 and I must say people were into it. So I can see your point I just never used my own made videos but it's time. I am not one who likes to edit and rather just do it free style on the fly.
