Projector / Screen Concerns

Hello fellow VJs,
I've got a gig comin up where they don't have a screen or a TV.
There's a few options I'm considering:
1. Hook up a 30 inch LCD monitor somewhere
2. Hire a plasma screen TV and... mount it on the wall?
3. Get a projector and just project on the brown wall
#3 option seems to be most realistic right now... get a stand and put the projector up as high as I can even if the crowd get in the way and make shadows I think it should add to the visuals.
Any tips from your experiences or thoughts?

O personally like projectors as opposed to screens. Lighter, variation in size, cheaper.

it wont look professional. i did a private event in a venue that looks somewhat simular. I rented two projector screens at 5x8 that can stand on their own. and i made two projector stands using speaker stands, wood and metal piping from home depot. and it looked like they belong there. you could look into that

if you project into the wall the picture quality will be poor as the paint on the wall absorb pixels. thats why you use screens as they use a special paint on them which gives a good quality picture also this paint is available for home use as some people buys projectors for home but they paint that wall as a permanent wall for their movies. and for the projector stand i found it handy if you just go and buy a karaoke tv stand as its already got a flat base where the projector cant sit proudly. if you want to know how they look like try www.htfr.com we r in the uk. good luck and let us know how did ur gig go?

i have one unit projecting onto a wall, making a roughly 196" screen and unless you are within a few feet of it, you'd never know that a) it's a wall and not a screen, or b) the wall is textured.
based on what i see in the pictures there, however, i think you're going to have a tough time doing anything aside from hanging plasma or lcd's. the place looks too classy for anything else.

agreed, lycra is a great way to make a mobile screen. a little creativity and a few pieces of 1/2" conduit pipe go a long way.

If you're not going to do it right WAIT till you can! but Plasmas are the best (you had) idea for THAT room. . . I would go with the new Samsung L.E.D. T.Vs but that's me. They look cool! So cool I'm willing to pay just to watch them and they're new so that can help market the venue, plus make you look good.

it's a nice place but it looks a lot different under clubbing light conditions, I think I can get away with projecting on a wall with a projector on a stand because they have these awesome lights that make different shapes on the walls too

if your handy you can make a great screen for front or rear projection for under $40. using pvc, velcro and 90/10 spandex/lycra material. i built a 75" widescreen screen using the method i'm talking about and it looks great. i even made a stand with the pvc for the screen. i recently set it up for an election night event (i love gov gigs easy money) and when i went back to tear it all down i had 3 dif. people asking me where i got it. when i told them i made it for $40 they were blown away. the screen is light so it can be hung from drop ceiling track or placed on a light stand (which i did for the event) and then it can be raised as high as needed. i too made small platforms that mount on speaker stands for my projectors to help with placement and height of the projector.

Synystr, thats a great idea. I have tons of pvc and velcro at my job. Where do I get the material for the screen?

I made a screen out of Lycra and it's looks good but you can tell that the pic is a lot better on a real screen.
Here's pics of mine it's 12 ft.

Mine only cost me like 20 dollars. . . I think the girl liked me and hooked it up haha

I set it up in my sat gig last night to show the manager the impact a screen has over the lcd we have in there now. when i go to tear down today i can snap some pics of it hanging up but i won't be able to have an image on it my "setup" isn't set up there anymore that comes with me at night.
The material you can get at any fabric store just ask for 90/10 lycra/spandex material. i used the white but there have grey and other colors. its like $10 a yard.
Mark where did you get the fabric large enough to cover a 12' span? around here its only in 64" widths. did you sew it together? if so do you notice a seem? if not can i have the # to the place you got yours from. i would love a truss sized screen.

yeah nice... so u made DIY screens and got them permanently installed in that club? Looks huge!
dj synystr
4:53 PM - 8 June, 2009
actually i made the screen for my smaller mobile gigs. its like 70" or so diagonal. the club is a hard sell on anything new, as with most clubs. i have been doing video on the smaller 47" lcd you can see in some of the pictures for 6 months. i set that screen up two weeks ago to show them the response from the crowd a nice screen will get. they finally listened to me and are all for a permanent install. i have a spare projector and new pull down screen which i mounted at the end of the room above the bar. its only gonna be used on my night and they will cover any bulb replacement. I'm sure in a few weeks they will just make me an offer on the setup. sometimes you gotta force feed people to change with technology and then when they do they ask themselves why i took so long to do it.
shigga
5:18 PM - 8 June, 2009
yeah true that. I'm hoping for permanent installations as well after 1 or 2 gigs.
