Serato Video General Discussion

Talk about Serato Video and Video-SL.

what Laptop besides mac

Dj rick1013 1:44 AM - 24 May, 2009
OK I am in need of a new laptop to make the videos work But I cannot afford the mac book right now what else can I use
J Studda 10:25 AM - 24 May, 2009
Check out a high end HP but, I would save up and just get a MAC. I ran the program on a PC before and went to a MAC before i made the move to video. The program is designed on a MAC so why go through the hassle. I spent 1400 on my 13 inch macbook and it hasn't crapped on me yet. The only thing extra i did to it was putting in 4GB of ram instead of 2GB
skinnyguy 11:12 AM - 24 May, 2009

Do not look for the super cheap deals on laptops when buying a laptop for VSL.
If buying a PC, I would stay away from anything under $800.
You will get what you pay for.

Know that just because the comp may have a kick ass dual processor and 4 gigs of ram that doesn't mean that it will run VSL and SSL well.
You are at the mercy of the worse component in the computer.
This is one of the biggest problems with PC laptops... every one has different components.
They are like Frankenstein machines.
Many companies put great processors and a bunch of ram in computers with really cheap chipsets/drivers.

These crappy components won't allow your processor and ram to work as well as they should thus not allowing you to use high cpu intensive programs such as SSL and VSL.

If you want a computer that we know works and works very well save a little money and buy a Macbook.

You can buy and older generation Macbook for $1000 right now.
Funkytownstopsix 9:24 PM - 24 May, 2009
check my specs on my profile worked right out the box. For the record I also have a MAC had major issues while trying to find a PC that worked after I found one I then brought a MAC.....Best of both worlds and have a backup... Phat-AL has some major stories to tell I am sure he would recommend a MAC no matter what..

go to the apple store (apple.com) and click on the "store" tab at the top

after that scroll down the page and look for a skinny-tall box that says "special deals" on the left side of the page.

The refurb macs section is the first in this box
Dj rick1013 4:24 PM - 25 May, 2009
The cheapest one on there for the right specs is $2600? MAC is NUTS

the 1.6ghz Is not enought they are nuts

Maybe serato shold take into consideration everybody cannot afford a $1600 mixer and then a $2000 laptop and they should make their equipemtn more compatable to the pc user

- Buying a Mac -

If you are in college, know someone in college or someone who works at a college.
You get a significant discount with a college ID.

Also,
Wait until June/July to buy because they will give you a free iPod with that college ID.

Buying a Mac is one of the best investments I've ever made. Don't forget that you can also run Windows on a Mac and have a dual bootable system.
If you live near an Apple store, sign up for Apple one to one ($99 a year), they'll teach you everything.

Good luck.
2Nyce 10:08 PM - 26 May, 2009
i have a macbook(black) 2.4 250 gb hd..and obviously not the video card requirement because it only comes with the macbook pro..if i up my ram to 4gb will this make up 4 not having the required video card?
DJ Dub Cowboy 10:10 PM - 26 May, 2009
you will still be denied certain effects, but the mixing and playing back of videos will be solid. When I went from Macbook to Macbook Pro, there were only a few effects that were different. of course the effects you get on the MBP are badass...Melt and Rotoscope were worth the upgrade for me.
J Studda 11:49 PM - 26 May, 2009
I'll get a macbook pro later, they are quite expensive but for now the macbook is doing me just fine. I do wonder about switching over to firewire 800 instead of 400. what's the difference over usb?

have her buy it through the apple store on line. the purchase has to be in the students name. look for the educational store on apple.com. The prices drop by a couple hundred on laptops.

I got an even better deal by going into the campus apple store

Well maybe that's a good thing. I'm tired of getting undercut/promoters offering me $150 for the night for audio sets. Maybe, just maybe the fact that you have to spend almost 4k for video done right will mean that the market won't be flooded w/ wavies who have watermarks all over their video. Why are you bitching about the price? Everyone knew how much it would cost as soon as VSL 1.0 came out last february. You can whine and moan about it all, but it comes down to the fact that you have to PAY DUES in order to make it doing video. It used to be that you had to prove yourself DJing, but now that's been washed out by the greedy-ass promoters and the undercutting wannabe DJs.

BTW the problem isn't with serato, it's with Windows adding so many goddamn restrictions on Quicktime (which is by far a superior codec set compared to windows media) in XP and especially Vista. Bitch to Bill Gates, not Nathan...

I dont think it is too expensive to do video.. i mean until serato & rane released the 57, it cost like 6k+ to do video using those DVDJ-1000's, and the video mixer.

I got the 57, and a Macbook upgraded with only 2gb of ram, and a 500gb hard drive, and i dont have any problems..

Im wanting a new macbook that i can fit 4gb of ram into it b/c video sl added that new feature where you can decide your video quality., and im looking at about 1700 for the one i want.

Pretty cheap compared to our options a couple of years ago...

P.S - PC's Suck. Not just with serato, but in general. MAC is definitely where it is at now.
DJ Dub Cowboy 6:50 PM - 27 May, 2009
upgraded video card in the MBP will bring more features to VSL than the extra 2GB of Ram, even if you get a last year's model you'll be styling.

If I had to buy one today I think I would still pick up a pre-unibody.
2 FW ports
no extra converter needed for s-video
matte screen

i'm happy
Kenny Q 8:19 PM - 27 May, 2009
Buying a computer is not as expensive as buying all of the DVDs and videos.

No, the problem is mainly with serato. Some problems do arise from QT, but those are from the programming of QT.

Yeah, microsoft programmed special instructions in their OS's to run QT more slowly :/
