I have had alot of trouble with the newest version of Scratchlive and trying to use Video SL... it keeps closing the program and locking up my computer.. I have plenty of space and ram to run the program and use VSL... I have even switched to use Virtual DJ and all my vids are fine.. and it uses more resources...
Am I alone in this problem???

No, you're not alone with Vista problems. Buy a mac so you can spend your time DJ'n rather than hacking a pc :P I gave up on my Vista laptop 6 months ago and couldn't be happier...

I was able to get my Vista laptop to run VSL okay after tweaking. But after all the tweaks, I still had to set the latency to 10 to not get any dropouts. On my MBP, I can set it to the min (2) and that alone is worth it.

You need all that to run SSL and VSL smoothly. Don't get me wrong I have 3 PC's in my house but the only reason i got the MAC is for SSL and VSL

How do you know it's running better than on a MBP? I have seen a few DJs that said they have it working great on a PC and it is not as smooth as on a Mac.

As soon as I seen the topic I already knew BUY A MAC would be all over the place.
I have both and I bet money you can't tell which one I mix with....Although I try to ues my Mac more since I paid a grip for it. I don't have any issues either and I am running vista 32 with 4gig(I Know 3gig due to 32.)
I have one question does it work fine before you click to bring up video?

Am I alone in this problem???
Sounds like what happened to me. I had one of the earlier Beta versions working just fine. i then downloaded a newer beta version & I could not open VSL without my computer freezing/locking up. It seems like i had downloaded the mac version instead of the PC version. Once i downloaded the correct version it has been working without a hitch. i will try it LIVE tonite in the club for the first time. If it crashes, I will revert to virtual DJ to make it through the night.
By the way ASUS PC, 3GB, 2.4GHZ, 32 bit, Western Digital 2TB External,

Not trying to hijack this thread or anything...just wanted to give an update which might encourage DJ Daniel Weaver to keep tweaking his system.
I played last night on my PC lap top without any glitches or issues....approx a 3 hour set. No heavy scratching, just light scratching & beat matching. Will try it again tonight. It is running on Vista 32 bit.

i think the most important thing for pc users is your video card. if it's not the right one with the right drivers vsl will work like shit. 3 brand new pc laptops in and can't get past medium quality and >35-45 fps (this is all with video still choppy as hell).
if you get a mac everything is right for vsl. i fucking hate apple, but vsl works on it so...

better spending extra $800 once on a mac than spending another $800 (most likely at least $1k) or so on another laptop (and possibly another "$800" after that!) on pc lappys and finding out they both won't run vsl....not to mention time = $$$...
so less time wasted, less $$$ wasted as well..

It comes back when you resell it down the line. Every checked out the resale value on PCs? Macs have a VERY good resale value.

Me too. PC user for over 15 years or so. Loved PC to death. Then when my brand new $1500 PC laptop couldn't run VSL flawlessly with "no graphics limited" i was very upset. Best Buy had open box MBP brand new on the shelf. Thought I'd give it a try hence the open box special. Serato guys are 100% right. Mac is the way to go! I prob won't buy another PC again (unless my girlfriend wants one --> but even she is hooked on my MBP now).
Just remember. Watch the NAMM vids. Serato engineers make SSL/VSL initially on MAC's. They show it off hardcore then they come home and work their asses off on converting it for PC and older MAC's. All major motion picture companies --> Use MAC; All major record labels --> Use MAC; And lastly .... NASA uses MAC to put our astronauts into space.
I guess after all this being know and all i've went through personally --> I'm now a MAC!

first part, yes mac makes running VSL easy for people who don't know how to tweak systems.
second part, lol, no. All 3 use all 3 major OS's.

oh. well. then my researching on the "intronet" must have been wrong. damn the internet and it's lies. lol
but seriously ... i have built computers, tweaked, upgraded, etc. vista runs approx. 60-75 processes out of the box. xp uses approx. 32-35 processes out of the box. mac runs almost nothing.
like i said this is my very first mac purchase and damn me and my hard headedness. i said macs weren't that much better than pc's. but ... i was wrong all this time and i am admitting it! i was wrong.

Well I would not say mac is better what I would say that the OSX is better in the case of SLV. Also OSX is not being hacked 24 hours a day....YET and I did say YET. It sure doesn't hurt that SLV was really built for Mac either. Come on look at what you have in a laptop the same stuff for the most part.. The issue is hardware!!!! For PC due to the fact that they try to bring down cost of the laptop and so many manufactures are in the mix you get tons of hardware alone with drivers that I am sure Microsoft test but not on each laptop that is produced by some many comapaines. MAC for the most part stays with same people and drivers are written for specific applications and hardware which cut's down on may variables. Think about it like this if Mac let other companies build their laptops they would have the same issues. Who builds mac only mac, on the PC side HP, Alien Ware , Compaq, E Machine, ect ect. So Mac is better for this application but PC is better for others. I have both like I said if I was mixing in front of you, you would not know which is which. LIke others I went out and brought a few laptops before I found one that would work and yes Mac worked the first time, but damn I can buy to nice ass 17inch laptops for the price of a MAC and that's the only problem I have with MAC to high priced.
In the end if you want to save time buy a MAC, SLV was written for it. If you want to save money buy a PC and u might be spending a lot of time on these forums and tweeking. Or you can get lucky like I did and get one that requires that you don't do anything... I have the best of both worlds... The choice is yours

Yeah exactly funky.
I guess I can see why something that is guaranteed to work for a certain product would be appealing. But im an engineering, and love a challenge and to "fix" things, so to me tweaking is tons of fun :)
Saving money aint bad either

I have had no problems with my PC I have a Acer 8730 its a 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo, NVidia 9600M GT w/ 1 Gig of (DEDICATED MEMORY) on the Video Card, 4 Gigs of memory, running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I swaped out my hard Drive for a 128 GB Solid State Hard Drive. with this configuration with no videos loaded it averages about 80.2 fps, the i load a video apon loading for about 2 seconds it dips to about 40 fps, then after that when i play the one video it goes back to about 50 to 55 fps, then i load a second video, it dips to about 30 fps, then with both playing it averages about 35 to 40 fps, not choppy. I expermented with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit RC1. I partitioned my hard drive so i can dual boot between Vista & Windows 7, and with no videos it is about 62 fps, whe i play one video it drops to about 55 fps, then picks up to 60 fps after 2 seconds i add the second video it drops to 50 fps the after 2 to 3 seconds it is solid @ 55 + fps. I am impressed with Windows 7 performance. I played all night with this configuration with on crashes. I sticking with Windows 7.

DJgeeth engineer or not PC may give you some issues more than you want to know. It will almost make you want to build a laptop yourself. Like you I wanted the challenge that's why I kept on until I got one that worked just so happened it worked right out the box...U can spend more time practicing if you buy a mac that's for sure. Yet I feel really good that I have both and some don't even have one(that works like it should that is) Good luck.... If you run into some issue hit me up I bet I have been there and done that on pc. FYI I did the hackamac on a laptop I could not get to work and it worked had to find some hacked video drivers but it worked just like a mac....Like I said above OSX.....

I couldn't get the hackintosh to work right either, just did it to mess around. Installed on 3 of my computers but each one was missing something essential like an audio driver, so that was a deal breaker.
If you're referring to random issues that pop up -- I rigorously test my system before using it live. Lots of hours of practice, leaving it running videos on auto 24 hours, etc.
Also I do have a lot of time on my hands, I cant really do any gigs during the week (In grad school still), so that gives me sunday-thurs to fuck around with laptops :P
Anyone try QT-Alternative + compatibility mode yet? Its worked for me on 2 different computers so far....

I got hackintosh to work perfect... It was fun to do as a matter of fact the hardest part was finding the video drivers and that was not hard either. Still have it on my hp on the second drive... I think I I will delete it now as I never use it. I use Mac Drive to move files around on pc & mac

Something to be said about buying a computer by a company that bases it's operating system around it's hardware (or preferred hardware).
You have to remember that Apple only has a 10% market share (www.tuaw.com) so the general population have not been exposed to what Apple has to offer.
And long term pro-audio and video users already know what Apple has to offer, that's why team Serato bases VSL around OSX first.
