HOW TO ADD PICTURE FILES TO VIDEO SL SONGS THAT DON'T HAVE VIDEO

dj_killa_kev 12:57 AM - 19 May, 2009
Hello to all........ I bought video sl 2 weeks ago and plan on using it for the first time this weekend (5-24) wondering the songs that i have that don't have video is there a way to add a picture to it so that when i play it i don't have a blank screen
dj_killa_kev 1:13 AM - 19 May, 2009
can u tell me how to do that... I'm going crazy over here......lol
DJLRock 6:40 AM - 19 May, 2009
you can make a video out of some photos or just download some ambient stuff.
J Studda 1:56 PM - 19 May, 2009
There are free vids at movietools.info. These are what I use as fillers when I don't have the video for the track that I'm playing. You have to convert them to MP4 format but they look great!!
dj_killa_kev 11:55 PM - 19 May, 2009
O.K. I will check that out. But what I'm trying to do is take the flyer from the party I'm doing and add that so some of the songs that i know don't have videos
DJLRock 1:26 AM - 20 May, 2009
drop the flyer into imovie and make it an mp4
dj_killa_kev 1:30 AM - 20 May, 2009
where would i go to do that.... I have no knowledge of this
DJLRock 1:41 AM - 20 May, 2009
are you on a mac?
dj_killa_kev 3:34 AM - 20 May, 2009
yeah
itchie 6:57 AM - 20 May, 2009
open the quartz composer program. create new quartz file, add a picture importer patch, import file, connect to a billboard, save. done.
you can do mad shit with quartz composer & qtz files! quick, low cpu, and small in size.
Redi2roc 7:30 AM - 20 May, 2009
umm i think u can do this in vegas its pretty simple just "stretch" the inserted picture along the whole song and it should be attached to it then save give it a try?
nik39 3:30 PM - 20 May, 2009
Where is AKIEM?
dj sof 6:10 PM - 20 May, 2009
if you use a mac i am sure you have IMOVIE and TOAST.so open imovie select new project drag you picture to the project no sound needed.then export it to the desktop.if the file format is not saved as mp4 then you have to open toast, there select dvd option drag the saved file from the desktop to toast at the bottom you c 3 buttons which are + - and export.click on export a window will drop with different options.select save in desktop and change the format to mp4 then ok. this time you have the same file but in mp4 format which you need for video sl.
its only about 3seconds play but if you are aware of video sl you have the option of loading a song with a different video so drop the song you want then drop the picture in there this time you have the song playing and the picture on the screen.job done
practice and enjoy.

the current version of VSL does not support QTZ
a-swift 6:14 PM - 20 May, 2009
also, to answer the poster's original question, google picassa can make a picture into a movie file.

The current version of VSL is 1.1 which should support QTZ.

really? didn't work for me last time i tried.
nik39 6:25 PM - 20 May, 2009
I didn't read any notice that QTZ support has been removed in the final version, so it should still work (I haven't tried the final version).
dj hes 6:50 PM - 20 May, 2009
I had this same problem when I started out. The EASIEST say IMO to do this is as suggested with Imovie. You just:

-open imovie
-drag n drop the image you want
-then in the drop down you can export with quicktime.
-Make the settings an MP4 and its done.

It is quick and no converting needed.
a-swift 7:38 PM - 20 May, 2009
oh i see what you mean nik. you're saying 1.1 is the current version. i wasn't notified that it was released. i'm still using the beta, which of course has QTZ support because I use it every night.
nik39 7:55 PM - 20 May, 2009
Oh, ah, ... yes talking about 1.1 which went final :)
a-swift 8:15 PM - 20 May, 2009
nobody told me
DJ-Phat-AL 8:22 PM - 20 May, 2009
hey swift... VSL 1.1 went final...

a-swift 1:54 PM - 21 May, 2009
Quartz Composer is a monster. I've been trying to find good documentation or books on it since it was invented.
Funkytownstopsix 2:07 PM - 21 May, 2009

Glad I could help! I was mad, cuz I looked for days on an easy way to do this and fancy programs, and the whole time I had this on my mac lol.
AMF 4:51 PM - 21 May, 2009
Hell, I was set to buy final cut pro or vegas to do this. lol! The only reason why I didn't is because I recetly bought a subwoofer and I didn't want to spend another $600 on the video software too. So you saved me at least $600 (for now). =)
itchie 12:52 AM - 22 May, 2009
Funky i'll write you directions when i get back in front of my computer.
a-swift 1:03 AM - 22 May, 2009
i made this EVEN EASIER with ffmpeg:

create 300 symlinks for a 300 frame long movie:

perl -e '@foo = (1 .. 300); foreach (@foo) { $num = sprintf("%03d", $_) . ".jpg"; `ln -s IMAGE.JPG $num`; }'

then run ffmpeg to make an mp4 movie:

ffmpeg -f image2 -i %03d.jpg -b 3000k -r 29.97 -vcodec h264 -s 720x480 movie.mp4

note, that this would be much easier if my version of ffmpeg used the -t (duration) switch. then the symlinks would not be required. you'll also want to remove the symlinks when you're done.
Funkytownstopsix 3:04 AM - 22 May, 2009
thanks itchie...
dj sof 7:22 PM - 22 May, 2009

open quartz composer.
open new blank composition.
click patch creator.
search for image importer and double click.
search for clear and double click.
search for billboard and double click.

1 go back into the workspace.
2 make sure 'clear' is set to 1 (if not click the number to change it).
3 select image importer in the workspace.
4 click patch inspector from top menu bar.
5 click viewer from top menu.
6 go into settings from the dropdown menu in inspector for the image importer.
7 click import file and import.
8 click and hold onto the circle (says image) in the image importer patch and drag the string to (image) circle in billboard patch.
9 click patch parameters for the top menu. it should now be displayed to the right in the workspace.
10 click on the billboard patch in the workspace and you should see width and position etc.
11 change settings to desired size.
12 click on clear patch in the workspace to change background color.
13 save.

i still think my way is easier. i explained it in TWO lines. how could it get more simple than that?
itchie 10:27 AM - 23 May, 2009
true, but learning how to make quartz files will only help VSL users in the long run...
and i was breaking it down. i think i explained it here in TWO lines aswell.

well in my case, 2 lines are two actual tasks. plus you can copy and paste my lines and be almost done.

agreed though about everybody should learn quartz composer. it's the secret sauce.
Kenny Q 11:50 PM - 28 May, 2009
I don't know about the other methods but iMovie will create a theme for you too.
I'm going to use the picture book theme for Saturdays wedding.
I think it took me about 5 minutes to make it.
